Dynamical phase diagram of the dc-driven underdamped Frenkel-Kontorova chain
Multistep dynamical phase transition from the locked to the running state of
atoms in response to a dc external force is studied by MD simulations of the
generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model in the underdamped limit. We show that the
hierarchy of transition recently reported [Braun et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78,
1295 (1997)] strongly depends on the value of the friction constant. A simple
phenomenological explanation for the friction dependence of the various

On the driven Frenkel-Kontorova model: II. Chaotic sliding and nonequilibrium melting and freezing
The dynamical behavior of a weakly damped harmonic chain in a spatially
periodic potential (Frenkel-Kontorova model) under the subject of an external
force is investigated. We show that the chain can be in a spatio-temporally
chaotic state called fluid-sliding state. This is proven by calculating
correlation functions and Lyapunov spectra. An effective temperature is
attributed to the fluid-sliding state. Even though the velocity fluctuations
are Gaussian distributed, the fluid-sliding state is clearly not in equilibrium
because the equipartition theorem is violated. We also study the transition
between frozen states (stationary solutions) and=7F molten states
(fluid-sliding states). The transition is similar to a first-order phase
transition, and it shows hysteresis. The depinning-pinning transition
(freezing) is a nucleation process. The frozen state contains usually two
domains of different particle densities. The pinning-depinning transition
(melting) is caused by saddle-node bifurcations of the stationary states. It
depends on the history. Melting is accompanied by precursors, called
micro-slips, which reconfigurate the chain locally. Even though we investigate
the dynamics at zero temperature, the behavior of the Frenkel-Kontorova model
is qualitatively similar to the behavior of similar models at nonzero

Stokes' Drift of linear Defects
A linear defect, viz. an elastic string, diffusing on a planar substrate
traversed by a travelling wave experiences a drag known as Stokes' drift. In
the limit of an infinitely long string, such a mechanism is shown to be
characterized by a sharp threshold that depends on the wave parameters, the
string damping constant and the substrate temperature. Moreover, the onset of
the Stokes' drift is signaled by an excess diffusion of the string center of
mass, while the dispersion of the drifting string around its center of mass may

Site-specific labeling of nucleotides for making RNA for high resolution NMR studies using an E. coli strain disabled in the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway
Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a versatile organism for making nucleotides labeled with stable isotopes (13C, 15N, and/or 2H) for structural and molecular dynamics characterizations. Growth of a mutant E. coli strain deficient in the pentose phosphate pathway enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (K10-1516) on 2-13C-glycerol and 15N-ammonium sulfate in Studier minimal medium enables labeling at sites useful for NMR spectroscopy. However, 13C-sodium formate combined with 13C-2-glycerol in the growth media adds labels to new positions. In the absence of labeled formate, both C5 and C6 positions of the pyrimidine rings are labeled with minimal multiplet splitting due to 1JC5C6 scalar coupling. However, the C2/C8 sites within purine rings and the C1′/C3′/C5′ positions within the ribose rings have reduced labeling. Addition of 13C-labeled formate leads to increased labeling at the base C2/C8 and the ribose C1′/C3′/C5′ positions; these new specific labels result in two- to three-fold increase in the number of resolved resonances. This use of formate and 15N-ammonium sulfate promises to extend further the utility of these alternate site specific labels to make labeled RNA for downstream biophysical applications such as structural, dynamics and functional studies of interesting biologically relevant RNAs
Effect of Systemic Hypertension With Versus Without Left Ventricular Hypertrophy on the Progression of Atrial Fibrillation (from the Euro Heart Survey).
Hypertension is a risk factor for both progression of atrial fibrillation (AF) and development of AF-related complications, that is major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). It is unknown whether left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) as a consequence of hypertension is also a risk factor for both these end points. We aimed to assess this in low-risk AF patients, also assessing gender-related differences. We included 799 patients from the Euro Heart Survey with nonvalvular AF and a baseline echocardiogram. Patients with and without hypertension were included. End points after 1 year were occurrence of AF progression, that is paroxysmal AF becoming persistent and/or permanent AF, and MACCE. Echocardiographic LVH was present in 33% of 379 hypertensive patients. AF progression after 1 year occurred in 10.2% of 373 patients with rhythm follow-up. In hypertensive patients with LVH, AF progression occurred more frequently as compared with hypertensive patients without LVH (23.3% vs 8.8%, p = 0.011). In hypertensive AF patients, LVH was the most important multivariably adjusted determinant of AF progression on multivariable logistic regression (odds ratio 4.84, 95% confidence interval 1.70 to 13.78, p = 0.003). This effect was only seen in male patients (27.5% vs 5.8%, p = 0.002), while in female hypertensive patients, no differences were found in AF progression rates regarding the presence or absence of LVH (15.2% vs 15.0%, p = 0.999). No differences were seen in MACCE for hypertensive patients with and without LVH. In conclusion, in men with hypertension, LVH is associated with AF progression. This association seems to be absent in hypertensive women
Progression From Paroxysmal to Persistent Atrial Fibrillation. Clinical Correlates and Prognosis
Objectives: We investigated clinical correlates of atrial fibrillation (AF) progression and evaluated the prognosis of patients demonstrating AF progression in a large population. Background: Progression of paroxysmal AF to more sustained forms is frequently seen. However, not all patients will progress to persistent AF. Methods: We included 1,219 patients with paroxysmal AF who participated in the Euro Heart Survey on AF and had a known rhythm status at follow-up. Patients who experienced AF progression after 1 year of follow-up were identified. Results: Progression of AF occurred in 178 (15%) patients. Multivariate analysis showed that heart failure, age, previous transient ischemic attack or stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and hypertension were the only independent predictors of AF progression. Using the regression coefficient as a benchmark, we calculated the HATCH score. Nearly 50% of the patients with a HATCH score >5 progressed to persistent AF compared with only 6% of the patients with a HATCH score of 0. During follow-up, patients with AF progression were more often admitted to the hospital and had more major adverse cardiovascular events. Conclusions: A substantial number of patients progress to sustained AF within 1 year. The clinical outcome of these patients regarding hospital admissions and major adverse cardiovascular events was worse compared with patients demonstrating no AF progression. Factors known to cause atrial structural remodeling (age and underlying heart disease) were independent predictors of AF progression. The HATCH score may help to identify patients who are likely to progress to sustained forms of AF in the near future. \ua9 2010 American College of Cardiology Foundation
Changes of the human gut microbiome induced by a fermented milk product
The gut microbiota (GM) consists of resident commensals and transient microbes conveyed by the diet but little is known about the role of the latter on GM homeostasis. Here we show, by a conjunction of quantitative metagenomics, in silico genome reconstruction and metabolic modeling, that consumption of a fermented milk product containing dairy starters and Bifidobacterium animalis potentiates colonic short chain fatty acids production and decreases abundance of a pathobiont Bilophila wadsworthia compared to a milk product in subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, n = 28). The GM changes parallel improvement of IBS state, suggesting a role of the fermented milk bacteria in gut homeostasis. Our data challenge the view that microbes ingested with food have little impact on the human GM functioning and rather provide support for beneficial health effects
Content of volatile substances in water-ethanol extracts of Achillea millefolium L. and Achillea collina J. Becker ex Rchb.
Comparative analysis of volatile substances from water-ethanol extracts of two species of Achillea L. is presented in the article. It has been determined that common substances for the studied extracts were α- and β-pinene, camphor, pinocarvone, cis-sabinen hydrate, caryophillene and 1.8-cineole. The chemical composition is mainly represented with bicyclic (34.6% in A. millefolium and 38.6% in A. collina) and with monocyclic monoterpenes (per 11.1%) and sesquiterpenes (correspondently 14.3 and 15.7%). Unlike A. millefolium, whose extracts contains 5.3% of aromatic compounds, the extracts of A. collina contains 3.32% of aliphatic nature substances
