Unveiling GRB hard X-ray afterglow emission with Simbol-X
Despite the enormous progress occurred in the last 10 years, the Gamma-Ray
Bursts (GRB) phenomenon is still far to be fully understood. One of the most
important open issues that have still to be settled is the afterglow emission
above 10 keV, which is almost completely unexplored. This is due to the lack of
sensitive enough detectors operating in this energy band. The only detection,
by the BeppoSAX/PDS instrument (15-200 keV), of hard X-ray emission from a GRB
(the very bright GRB 990123), combined with optical and radio observations,
seriously challenged the standard scenario in which the dominant mechanism is
synchrotron radiation produced in the shock of a ultra-relativistic fireball
with the ISM, showing the need of a substantial revision of present models. In
this respect, thanks to its unprecedented sensitivity in the 10-80 keV energy
band, Simbol-X, through follow-up observations of bright GRBs detected and
localized by GRB dedicated experiments that will fly in the >2010 time frame,

Prospects for multiwavelength polarization observations of GRB afterglows and the case GRB 030329
We explore the prospects for simultaneous, broad-band, multiwavelength
polarimetric observations of GRB afterglows. We focus on the role of cosmic
dust in GRB host galaxies on the observed percentage polarization of afterglows
in the optical/near-infrared bands as a function of redshift. Our driving point
is the afterglow of GRB 030329, for which we obtained polarimetric data in the
R band and K band simultaneously about 1.5 days after the burst. We argue that
polarimetric observations can be very sensitive to dust in a GRB host, because
dust can render the polarization of an afterglow wavelength-dependent. We
discuss the consequences for the interpretation of observational data and
emphasize the important role of very early polarimetric follow-up observations
in all bands, when afterglows are still bright, to study the physical
properties of dust and magnetic fields in high-z galaxies.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
Cyclotron lines in X-ray pulsars as a probe of relativistic plasmas in superstrong magnetic fields
The systematic search for the presence of cyclotron lines in the spectra of
accreting X-ray pulsars is being carried on with the BeppoSAX satellite since
the beginning of the mission. These highly successful observations allowed the
detection of cyclotron lines in many of the accreting X-ray pulsars observed.
Some correlations between the different measured parameters were found. We
present these correlations and discuss them in the framework of the current
