    EMOTION REGULATION DIFFICULTIES IN DEPRESSION

    Get PDF
Patients diagnosed with depression often experience difficulty in regulating their emotions due to non-adaptive regulatory strategies (e.g., avoidance, suppression, rumination). Adaptive emotion regulation skills (e.g., awareness, acceptance, self-support) can be trained and improved through psychological treatment. The objective of this study was to identify differences in emotion regulation skills between a clinical group of patients with depression (n=56) and a non-clinical group (n=56), adults without symptoms of depression. Methods. The study was based on socio-demographic survey and three self-report questionnaires adapted for use in Latvia: Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS; Gratz Roemer, 2004), Emotion Regulation Skills Questionnaire (ERSQ; Berking Znoj, 2008) and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ; Gross John, 2003). Results. Compared to the non-clinical group, the clinical group presented significantly decreased scores in several scales of ERSQ: Understanding, Self-support, Tolerance, Acceptance, Modification (p.001) and increased scores in four scales of DERS: Lack of emotional clarity, Difficulty engaging in goal-directed behaviour, Non-acceptance of emotional responses and Limited access to effective emotion regulation strategies (p.001). Conclusions. This study helps to identify the main emotion regulation difficulties for depression patients in Latvia ā€“ the ability to understand, accept, tolerate and modify emotions.Ā

WEB APPLICATION METHOD "3D EMOTION COMPOSITION IN SUPERVISION" APPROBATION

The global pandemic has accelerated the development of the digital environment, face-to-face work is transferred online, so it is important to create tools adapted to the digital environment. The emergency of Covid-19 has raised the demand for online supervision. In supervision sessions, it is important to talk about experiencing emotions in a professional environment. Latvia lacks digital methods for working with emotions in supervision. The aim of the study was to adapt the 3DEC method, to create it as a web application for use in remote supervision and to approbate the web application "3D emotion composition in supervision" in individual online supervisions. The original method 3DEC is intended for the evaluation of emotional experience in the practice of art therapists (Lejstrauta, 2021; Vanadziņa, 2021). The theoretical basis of the 3DEC method is integrative and includes the following principles: visual representation of emotions in a visible symbolic form; play and play space (Winnicot, 2007); distancing as one of the cognitive emotion regulation strategies (Powers LaBar, 2019). 3DEC is also based on the Adaptive Coping with Emotions Model (ACE Model) (Berking Whitley, 2014). The adapted method ā€œ3D composition of emotions in supervisionā€ (3DECS) is intended for work in online supervision with the aim to promote awareness of emotions, their understanding and selfā€“reflection. Using distancing and view of other perspectives, the method helps the client to reflect and become aware of emotional experiences, as well as provides an educational function about the meaning of emotions. The 3DECS method develops emotional awareness and adaptive emotion regulation skills. Main results: 1) the web application has been tested and is designed to work with emotions in supervision; 2) the data of the approbation stage show that the web application is sufficiently simple and intuitive; 3) the web application is secure because no information about the customer and the customer's actions in the tool is stored; 4) there are no restrictions on the use of the web application in relation to the duration of the cooperation between the supervisor and the supervision client.

The aim of this study was to carry out the adaption of the Latvian version of the Emotion Regulation Skills Questionnaire (ERSQ-27)(SEK-27, Berking & Znoj, 2008) for adults witch evaluates nine dimensions of emotion regulation skills. The questionnaire was completed by 376 adults (82% women and 18% men), aged 18 ā€“ 69 years (M = 31.2, SD = 12.99). The calculations for the adapted questionnaire were made for the Cronbachā€™s alpha, test-retest reliability and determination of the convergent and factorial validity. The five-factor solution proposed by the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was tested and compared with the theoretically postulated nine-factor solution using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The nine-factor model results in the Latvian version questionnaire explain 72% of varienace, but five-factors ā€“ 59.76%. The results for EFA and CFA were both higher in the nine-factor model. The internal consistency coefficients (Cronbachā€™s alpha) of the scales varied from 0.64 to 0.82, test-retest correlations ranged between 0.82 ā€“ 0.94. Similar results of the factor analysis were found in other research studies. Findings from this study showed significant evidence for the reliability and validity of the ERSQ-27 and it would be advisable to continue using it in scientific research.publishersversionPeer reviewe

Characteristics of Mindfulness Based Interventions for Different Patient Groups - Literature Review

    Get PDF
Mindfulness based interventions has been used in context with different mental and somatic health conditions in health care system with good evidences. In Latvia professionals working in psychiatry and rehabilitation are taking first steps to integrate mindfulness based interventions into their practice, therefore, guidelines for integration these interventions into the health care system is needed. The aim of this study is to evaluate existing evidences, content and mechanisms of mindfulness interventions for different patient groups. Electronic searches in PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, ClinicalKey, Cochrane Library, Wiley Online Library, and PsycInfo (2010 ā€“ 2018). Papers were required to meet the following criteria to be included in this review: (i) systematic review or meta-analysis; (ii) include quantitative outcomes for adult population in health care setting; (iii) published in English. Despite the good evidences, mindfulness based interventions are viewed as "complex intervention", researchers call for methodological, cultural and ethical attention to be made of implementing mindfulness practice into health care setting.publishersversionPeer reviewe

The research objective was to investigate the relationship between emotion regulation and social problem-solving skills among adults during COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical basis of the research is the Adaptive Coping with Emotions Model and Social problem-solving model. The participants of the study were 2608 Latvian residents aged 18 to 75 years (M = 46.4, SD = 13.9). Respondents filled in a socio-demographic survey, Emotion Regulation Skills Questionnaire and Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised version. The results revealed the relationship between emotion regulation and social problem-solving skills in adults, the closest relationship between positive problem orientation, rational problem-solving style and total emotion regulation skills. There are differences in total emotion regulation skills and almost all social problem-solving skills subscales between age groups, except for impulsive problem-solving, and differences in total emotion regulation skills and almost all social problem-solving skills subscales between groups with different levels of education, except for avoidant problem-solving. It is concluded that the development of emotion regulation skills can contribute to the improvement of social problem-solving skills, and with changes in age and level of education, the ability to regulate emotions and to cope with various social problems changes.
