Resurrection of the sea pen genus Ptilella Gray, 1870 and description of Ptilella grayi n. sp. from the NE Atlantic (Octocorallia: Pennatulacea)
The order Pennatulacea covers a group of specialized and morphologically distinct octocorals found in all oceans from intertidal areas to more than 6000 m in depth. Sea pens constitute an important structural component in marine soft-bottom communities by increasing the complexity of these environments. Despite being both morphologically distinctive and ecologically important, the taxonomy and systematics of sea pens is still poorly understood. Recent molecular studies have shown the existence of convergent morphological features, making the current familial distribution of genera unstable. The genus Pennatula Linnaeus, 1758 was one of the first described octocoral genera. It is the type genus of its family, Pennatulidae. Colonies of this genus have a characteristic morphology. Recent sampling efforts in the northeastern Atlantic have provided a number of colonies initially attributable to the genus Pennatula. Both morphological and molecular (mtMutS, Cox1 and 28S genes) study of this material supports the polyphyletic nature of this genus and the need to resurrect the genus Ptilella Gray, 1870 to accommodate these and other species. A new species, Ptilella grayi n. sp., is described and illustrated. The species Pennatula bayeri is proposed to be a junior synonym of Pennatula bellissima (here also considered in the genus Ptilella)
Asterocheres hirsutus, a new species of parasitic copepod (Siphonostomatoida : Asterocheridae) associated with an Antarctic hexactinellid sponge
The asterocherid siphonostomatoid copepod
Asterocheres hirsutus, a new species, is described from a
hexactinellid sponge of the genus Rossella Carter collected during the Polastern cruise ANT XVII/3, off
South Shetland Islands. The distinctive features of this
new species are: a female with 21-segmented and a male
with 17-segmented antennules, praecoxal endite of
maxillule more than four times longer than palp and the
ornamentation of the posterior surface of legs 1–4. A
detailed description of both sexes is presented
Selection of AGN candidates in the GOODS-South Field through SPITZER/MIPS 24 m variability
We present a study of galaxies showing mid-infrared variability in data taken
in the deepest Spitzer/MIPS 24 m surveys in the GOODS-South field. We
divide the dataset in epochs and subepochs to study the long-term
(months-years) and the short-term (days) variability. We use a
-statistics method to select AGN candidates with a probability
1% that the observed variability is due to statistical errors alone. We find 39
(1.7% of the parent sample) sources that show long-term variability and 55
(2.2% of the parent sample) showing short-term variability. That is, 0.03
sources arcmin for both, long-term and short-term variable
sources. After removing the expected number of false positives inherent to the
method, the estimated percentages are 1.0% and 1.4% of the parent sample for
the long-term and short-term respectively. We compare our candidates with AGN
selected in the X-ray and radio bands, and AGN candidates selected by their IR
emission. Approximately, 50% of the MIPS 24 m variable sources would be
identified as AGN with these other methods. Therefore, MIPS 24 m
variability is a new method to identify AGN candidates, possibly dust obscured
and low luminosity AGN, that might be missed by other methods. However, the
contribution of the MIPS 24 m variable identified AGN to the general AGN
population is small ( 13%) in GOODS-South.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
pacios destinados a centros comerciales, parques
Layer Selection in Progressive Transmission of Motion-Compensated JPEG2000 Video
MCJ2K (Motion-Compensated JPEG2000) is a video codec based on MCTF (Motion- Compensated Temporal Filtering) and J2K (JPEG2000). MCTF analyzes a sequence of images, generating a collection of temporal sub-bands, which are compressed with J2K. The R/D (Rate-Distortion) performance in MCJ2K is better than the MJ2K (Motion JPEG2000) extension, especially if there is a high level of temporal redundancy. MCJ2K codestreams can be served by standard JPIP (J2K Interactive Protocol) servers, thanks to the use of only J2K standard file formats. In bandwidth-constrained scenarios, an important issue in MCJ2K is determining the amount of data of each temporal sub-band that must be transmitted to maximize the quality of the reconstructions at the client side. To solve this problem, we have proposed two rate-allocation algorithms which provide reconstructions that are progressive in quality. The first, OSLA (Optimized Sub-band Layers Allocation), determines the best progression of quality layers, but is computationally expensive. The second, ESLA (Estimated-Slope sub-band Layers Allocation), is sub-optimal in most cases, but much faster and more convenient for real-time streaming scenarios. An experimental comparison shows that even when a straightforward motion compensation scheme is used, the R/D performance of MCJ2K competitive is compared not only to MJ2K, but also with respect to other standard scalable video codecs
Prognostic and Clinicopathological Significance of the Aberrant Expression of beta-Catenin in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
We would like to thank the research group CTS-392 (Plan Andaluz de Investigacion, Junta de Andalucia, Spain). This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the prognostic and clinicopathological significance of the aberrant expression of beta-catenin (assessed through the immunohistochemical loss of membrane expression, cytoplasmic and nuclear expression) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We searched for primary-level studies published before October-2021 through PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, with no limitation in regard to their publication date or language. We evaluated the methodological quality and risk of bias of the studies included using the QUIPS tool, carried out meta-analyses, explored heterogeneity and their sources across subgroups and meta-regression, and conducted sensitivity and small-study effects analyses. Forty-one studies (2746 patients) met inclusion criteria. The aberrant immunohistochemical expression of beta-catenin was statistically associated with poor overall survival (HR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.20-2.60, p = 0.004), disease-free survival (HR = 2.44, 95% CI = 1.10-5.50, p = 0.03), N+ status (OR = 2.39, 95% CI = 1.68-3.40, p < 0.001), higher clinical stage (OR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.58-3.63, p < 0.001), higher tumour size (OR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.23-2.53, p = 0.004), and moderately-poorly differentiated OSCC (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.09-2.25, p = 0.02). The loss of beta-catenin in the cell membrane showed the largest effect size in most of meta-analyses (singularly for poor overall survival [HR = 2.37, 95% CI = 1.55-3.62, p < 0.001], N+ status [OR = 3.44, 95% CI = 2.40-4.93, p < 0.001] and higher clinical stage [OR = 2.51, 95% CI = 1.17-5.35, p = 0.02]). In conclusion, our findings indicate that immunohistochemical assessment of the aberrant expression of beta-catenin could be incorporated as an additional and complementary routine prognostic biomarker for the assessment of patients with OSCC.Junta de Andalucia CTS-39
Ecologies of learning, visual narratives and ethnography. Metholodogical notes about Universidad Rural Paulo Freire case.
In this paper we present some of the first methodological results of the R&D Project called "Ecologies of learning in multiple contexts: analysis of expanded education projects and citizenship configurations" funded by Minister of Economy and Competitiveness (Spain) .
The interest of this project arises after considering that much of the individual and organizational learnings have been turning invisible in the different educational spaces. Therefore, our purpose is to study the different socio-educational mechanisms that individuals and organizations put into play in differents scenarios: schools, asociations, virtual academical contexts, etc.
On this ocassion, we present some of the methodological aspects from a rural environment, especifically the study we are developing with ‘Universidad Rural Paulo Freire’ of the Ronda mountain range (onwards URPF). This organization is focused in the recovery of tradicional learnings that people used to have around the rural world. At the same time, they are settled in a critical perspective that connects their actions with approaches of sustainability, dignity, feminims, etc.
The general objetives we consider for this project are the following:
1) To know life style of people in Ronda mountain range context.
2) To understand the configuration of URPF group and its impact in the territory.
3) To promote learning communities of practice with other organizations.
In order to draw on these general porpuses and after an agreement process with the URPF collective, we designed methodologically the develop of life stories, visual narratives and a deep narrative ethnography.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
