Separation by thermal diffusion in a rotary column
A rotary thermal diffusion column with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer cylinder static was used to separate n-heptane-benzene mixtures at different speeds of rotation. The results show that the column efficiency depends on the speed of rotation. For the optimum speed the increase in efficiency relative to the static column was of the order of 8%. The role of the geometric irregularities in the annulus width on performance of the rotary column is also discussed.Calouste Gulbenkian Foundatio
Liquid thermal diffusion in a batch rotary column
Experimental observations of separation by thermal diffusion in rotary columns have been published, but no adequate theory to explain the column
performance has been given. By consideration of the hydrodynamics within the annular space an approximate theory has been developed which shows that
for a geometrically perfect column the relevant parameters affecting separation can be simply related to the corresponding static column. The relaxation-time and separation are virtually independent of
the speed of rotation and separation values are more favourable for the rotary column. The application of the theory to non-perfect practical columns requires the consideration of the "equivalent annulus width" concept similar to the static case. Experimental tests conducted at different speeds of rotation in two geometrically different columns
whose inner cylinder rotates and the outer is static,
showed that the rotation at moderate speeds
increased the equilibrium separation by about 7%,
reducing, simultaneously the relaxation time by an
average of 3%. These results are in good agreement
with the theoretical predictions
A model for the interpretation of biofouling
The formation of biofilms on heat exchange surfaces
was studied using water with Pseudomonas fluorescens
as a contaminant and also a mixture of these bacteria
and kaolin particles. In every case increasing the
fluid velocity resulted in a decrease in the final
amount of deposit and in the deposition rate . The
effect of the fluid velocity was interpreted using a
mathematical model and it was found that cell
adhesion and reproduction were the fundamental
processes controlling the deposition rate .
The presence of inorganic particles in the
deposit enhanced the biofilm growth rate . This result
was explained by the differences in the structure of
the fouling layers
Constraints of a pulsation frequency on stellar parameters in the eclipsing spectroscopic binary system: V577 Oph
We present a preliminary spectroscopic analysis of the binary system V577Oph,
observed during the summer of 2007 on the 2.6m NOT telescope on La Palma. We
have obtained time series spectroscopic observations, which show clear binary
motion as well as radial velocity variations due to pulsation in the primary
star. By modelling the radial velocities we determine a full orbital solution
of the system, which yields M_A sin^3 i = 1.562 +/- 0.012 M_solar and M_B sin^3
i = 1.461 +/- 0.020 M_solar. An estimate of inclination from photometry yields
a primary mass of 1.6 M_solar. Using this derived mass, and the known pulsation
frequency we can impose a lower limit of 1 Gyr on the age of the system, and
constrain the parameters of the oscillation mode. We show that with further
analysis of the spectra (extracting the atmospheric parameters), tighter
constraints could be imposed on the age, metallicity and the mode parameters.
This work emphasizes the power that a single pulsation frequency can have for

Towards Multi-class Object Detection in Unconstrained Remote Sensing Imagery
Automatic multi-class object detection in remote sensing images in
unconstrained scenarios is of high interest for several applications including
traffic monitoring and disaster management. The huge variation in object scale,
orientation, category, and complex backgrounds, as well as the different camera
sensors pose great challenges for current algorithms. In this work, we propose
a new method consisting of a novel joint image cascade and feature pyramid
network with multi-size convolution kernels to extract multi-scale strong and
weak semantic features. These features are fed into rotation-based region
proposal and region of interest networks to produce object detections. Finally,
rotational non-maximum suppression is applied to remove redundant detections.
During training, we minimize joint horizontal and oriented bounding box loss
functions, as well as a novel loss that enforces oriented boxes to be
rectangular. Our method achieves 68.16% mAP on horizontal and 72.45% mAP on
oriented bounding box detection tasks on the challenging DOTA dataset,
outperforming all published methods by a large margin (+6% and +12% absolute
improvement, respectively). Furthermore, it generalizes to two other datasets,
NWPU VHR-10 and UCAS-AOD, and achieves competitive results with the baselines
even when trained on DOTA. Our method can be deployed in multi-class object
detection applications, regardless of the image and object scales and
orientations, making it a great choice for unconstrained aerial and satellite

Evaluation of wheat germplasm from the Madeira and Canary archipelagos using a single molecular marker. A rapid screening method for identification of durum wheat accessions
This work aims to present a rapid and precise screening method of wheat germplasm and identification of durum wheat accessions in germplasm collections. Fifty-two wheat accessions
maintained in the ISOPlexis germplasm bank at the Madeira University, Portugal, and 72 accessions from the Centre for Conservation of Crop Biodiversity of Tenerife (CCBAT), Spain,
have been screened for their specific ploidy status using the molecular marker Dgas44. We
have demonstrated that the Dgas44 sequence is effective in the screening of Madeiran and
Canarian wheat accessions. This screening method permitted the detection of 10 and 11 durum
accessions among Madeiran and Canarian wheats, accounting for 19.2 and 15.3% of screened
collections, respectively. The obtained results have shown a 100% of cases correspondence
with the previously performed morphological identification of the Madeiran wheats. It also
permitted rectification and clarification of previous classification of some accessions based
only on the morphological traits. The PCR based assay was directly applicable to the screening
of seeds and was suitable for detecting seed mixtures in accessions. This rapid method has
been proven to be a useful tool in gene bank accessions management including verification of

Some observations on asymmetrical separation in thermal diffusion columns
Data have been obtained in steady-state batch operated thermogravitational separation columns using different binary mixtures to test the theory recently published by Morgado et al. The experimental results confirm that separations by thermal diffusion are asymmetrical except when the initial concentration is 0.5 and that the asymmetry is larger as the initial concentration deviates from 0.5 and as the separation potential increases
Avaliação e seleção de progênies de cupuaçuzeiro (Theobroma grandiflorum), em Belém, Pará.
Este trabalho teve por objetivo a seleção entre e dentro de progênies de irmãos completos de cupuaçuzeiro. Foram avaliadas 21 progênies de irmãos completos, em dois experimentos, com cinco plantas por parcela. Os experimentos foram avaliados ao nível de indivíduos, em cada safra, para os caracteres: produção de frutos, polpa e semente, bem como resistência à vassoura-de-bruxa. Para efeito de seleção, também foi considerado o grau de parentesco das matrizes. As análises foram conduzidas via metodologia de modelos lineares mistos, como delineamento em blocos incompletos, desbalanceados com tratamentos comuns. Foram estimados os parâmetros genéticos e os valores genotípicos ajustados de progênies, bem como os valores genéticos aditivos e genotípicos individuais. Os resultados demonstraram que as progênies 12; 13; 18; 20; 21 e 24 tiveram os melhores desempenhos para as variáveis de produção. Entre elas, as pro- gênies 12; 13 e 18 foram as que mais se destacaram. Foram selecionadas três matrizes da progênie 18, duas matrizes da progênie 12 e uma matriz de cada uma das progênies 13; 20 e 21. É possível concluir que essas matrizes, juntamente com materiais selecionados em outras áreas experimentais, apresentam potencial para compor um pomar de sementes clonais, estabelecido em lote isolado de outros plantios, onde será produzida uma população melhorada de primeiro ciclo que se constituirá na nova cultivar de cupuaçuzeiro
Fast stable direct fitting and smoothness selection for Generalized Additive Models
Existing computationally efficient methods for penalized likelihood GAM
fitting employ iterative smoothness selection on working linear models (or
working mixed models). Such schemes fail to converge for a non-negligible
proportion of models, with failure being particularly frequent in the presence
of concurvity. If smoothness selection is performed by optimizing `whole model'
criteria these problems disappear, but until now attempts to do this have
employed finite difference based optimization schemes which are computationally
inefficient, and can suffer from false convergence. This paper develops the
first computationally efficient method for direct GAM smoothness selection. It
is highly stable, but by careful structuring achieves a computational
efficiency that leads, in simulations, to lower mean computation times than the
schemes based on working-model smoothness selection. The method also offers a
