Divided attention selectively impairs memory for self-relevant information
Information that is relevant to oneself tends to be remembered more than information that relates to other people, but the role of attention in eliciting this "self-reference effect" is unclear. In the present study, we assessed the importance of attention in self-referential encoding using an ownership paradigm, which required participants to encode items under conditions of imagined ownership by themselves or by another person. Previous work has established that this paradigm elicits a robust self-reference effect, with more "self-owned" items being remembered than "other-owned" items. Access to attentional resources was manipulated using divided-attention tasks at encoding. A significant self-reference effect emerged under full-attention conditions and was related to an increase in episodic recollection for self-owned items, but dividing attention eliminated this memory advantage. These findings are discussed in relation to the nature of self-referential cognition and the importance of attentional resources at encoding in the manifestation of the self-reference effect in memory
The nature of the increased peripheral resistance in hypertension*
Studies on hypertension in both human beings and animals have shown an increased response to vasopressor and vasodepressor agents. This increased reactivity, as well as the incompleteness of vasodilatation by large doses of vasodepressor agents, is believed to be due to structural changes in the vascular tree. Search for Second-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in Collisions at =1.96 TeV
Results on a search for pair production of second generation scalar
leptoquark in collisions at =1.96 TeV are reported. The
data analyzed were collected by the CDF detector during the 2002-2003 Tevatron
Run II and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 198 pb. Leptoquarks
(LQ) are sought through their decay into (charged) leptons and quarks, with
final state signatures represented by two muons and jets and one muon, large
transverse missing energy and jets. We observe no evidence for production
and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross sections as well
as lower limits on their mass as a function of , where is the

Serology describes a profile of declining malaria transmission in Farafenni, The Gambia
BACKGROUND: Malaria morbidity and mortality has declined in recent years in a number of settings. The ability to describe changes in malaria transmission associated with these declines is important in terms of assessing the potential effects of control interventions, and for monitoring and evaluation purposes. METHODS: Data from five cross-sectional surveys conducted in Farafenni and surrounding villages on the north bank of River Gambia between 1988 and 2011 were compiled. Antibody responses to MSP-119 were measured in samples from all surveys, data were normalized and expressed as seroprevalence and seroconversion rates (SCR) using different mathematical models. RESULTS: Results showed declines in serological metrics with seroprevalence in children aged one to 5 years dropping from 19 % (95 % CI 15-23 %) in 1988 to 1 % (0-2 %) in 2011 (p value for trend in proportions < 0.001) and the SCR dropping from 0.069 year(-1) (0.059-0.080) to 0.022 year(-1) (0.017-0.028; p = 0.004). The serological data were consistent with previously described drops in both parasite prevalence in children aged 1-5 years (62 %, 57-66 %, in 1988 to 2 %, 0-4 %, in 2011; p < 0.001), and all-cause under five mortality rates (37 per 1000 person-years, 34-41, in 1990 to 17, 15-19, in 2006; p = 0.059). CONCLUSIONS: This analysis shows accurate reconstruction of historical malaria transmission patterns in the Farafenni area using anti-malarial antibody responses. Demonstrating congruence between serological measures, and conventional clinical and parasitological measures suggests broader utility for serology in monitoring and evaluation of malaria transmission
IgG antibody responses to Plasmodium falciparum merozoite antigens in Kenyan children have a short half-life
Abstract Background Data suggest that antibody responses to malaria parasites merozoite antigens are generally short-lived and this has implications for serological studies and malaria vaccine designs. However, precise data on the kinetics of these responses is lacking. Methods IgG1 and IgG3 responses to five recombinant Plasmodium falciparum merozoite antigens (MSP-119, MSP-2 type A and B, AMA-1 ectodomain and EBA-175 region II) among Kenyan children were monitored using ELISA for 12 weeks after an acute episode of malaria and their half-lives estimated using an exponential decay model. Results The responses peaked mainly at week 1 and then decayed rapidly to very low levels within 6 weeks. Estimation of the half-lives of 40 IgG1 responses yielded a mean half-life of 9.8 days (95% CI: 7.6 – 12.0) while for 16 IgG3 responses it was 6.1 days (95% CI: 3.7 – 8.4), periods that are shorter than those normally described for the catabolic half-life of these antibody subclasses. Conclusion This study indicates antibodies against merozoite antigens have very short half-lives and this has to be taken into account when designing serological studies and vaccines based on the antigens.</p
Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device
in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken
during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the
number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for
all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The
efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments
reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per
layer is approximately 5 ns
Measurement of the Dipion Mass Spectrum in X(3872) -> J/Psi Pi+ Pi- Decays
We measure the dipion mass spectrum in X(3872)--> J/Psi Pi+ Pi- decays using
360 pb-1 of pbar-p collisions at 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector.
The spectrum is fit with predictions for odd C-parity (3S1, 1P1, and 3DJ)
charmonia decaying to J/Psi Pi+ Pi-, as well as even C-parity states in which
the pions are from Rho0 decay. The latter case also encompasses exotic
interpretations, such as a D0-D*0Bar molecule. Only the 3S1 and J/Psi Rho
hypotheses are compatible with our data. Since 3S1 is untenable on other
grounds, decay via J/Psi Rho is favored, which implies C=+1 for the X(3872).
Models for different J/Psi-Rho angular momenta L are considered. Flexibility in
the models, especially the introduction of Rho-Omega interference, enable good

Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS
has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions
at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection
criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined.
For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a
muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the
whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4,
while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The
efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than
90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall
momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The
transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity
for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be
better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions

Taxonomic diversity and identification problems of oncaeid microcopepods in the Mediterranean Sea
The species diversity of the pelagic microcopepod
family Oncaeidae collected with nets of 0.1-mm mesh
size was studied at 6 stations along a west-to-east transect
in the Mediterranean Sea down to a maximum depth of
1,000 m. A total of 27 species and two form variants have
been identified, including three new records for the
Mediterranean. In addition, about 20, as yet undescribed,
new morphospecies were found (mainly from the genera
Epicalymma and Triconia) which need to be examined
further. The total number of identified oncaeid species was
similar in the Western and Eastern Basins, but for some cooccurring
sibling species, the estimated numerical dominance
changed. The deep-sea fauna of Oncaeidae, studied
at selected depth layers between 400 m and the near-bottom
layer at >4,200 m depth in the eastern Mediterranean
(Levantine Sea), showed rather constant species numbers
down to ∼3,000 m depth. In the near-bottom layers, the
diversity of oncaeids declined and species of Epicalymma
strongly increased in numerical importance. The taxonomic
status of all oncaeid species recorded earlier in the
Mediterranean Sea is evaluated: 19 out of the 46 known
valid oncaeid species are insufficiently described, and most
of the taxonomically unresolved species (13 species) have
originally been described from this area (type locality). The
deficiencies in the species identification of oncaeids cast
into doubt the allegedly cosmopolitan distribution of some
species, in particular those of Mediterranean origin. The
existing identification problems even of well-described
oncaeid species are exemplified for the Oncaea mediacomplex,
including O. media Giesbrecht, O. scottodicarloi
Heron & Bradford-Grieve, and O. waldemari Bersano &
Boxshall, which are often erroneously identified as a single
species (O. media). The inadequacy in the species identification
of Oncaeidae, in particular those from the Atlantic
and Mediterranean, is mainly due to the lack of reliable
identification keys for Oncaeidae in warm-temperate and/or
tropical seas. Future efforts should be directed to the
construction of identification keys that can be updated
according to the latest taxonomic findings, which can be
used by the non-expert as well as by the specialist. The
adequate consideration of the numerous, as yet undescribed,
microcopepod species in the world oceans, in
particular the Oncaeidae, is a challenge for the study of the
structure and function of plankton communities as well as
for global biodiversity estimates
