    Environmental Education in Guangzhou in the People's Republic of China: global theme, politically determined

    This article is concerned with environmental education in southern China and with factors that have determined the nature of environmental curricula in secondary schools. Data are based on interviews with key players within the field of environmental education in the city of Guangzhou. Six interdependent themes became apparent in the primarily utilitarian conception of environmental education, namely, environmental education as (1) a response to environmental degradation and practical needs of society; (2) a knowledge-focused area of scientific learning in the national interest; (3) a field of study with Chinese characteristics; (4) a political tool and an element in national propaganda; (5) an administratively led and centrally controlled innovation; and (6) a field of study in conflict with mainstream education.     Environmental Education in Singapore: A Curriculum for the Environment or in the National Interest?

    Over the last decade, Singapore, in line with other countries in the region, has been attempting to develop a cross-curricular environmental education programme. This paper examines the context variables that have helped to shape the environmental curriculum in schools using evidence from interviews conducted with key players and teachers involved in the development. Despite a rhetoric couched in progressive terms focusing on 'awareness', 'attitudes', 'action', 'participation', 'experience' and 'life-long learning', the curriculum detail stresses information of a dominantly scientific nature reflecting a largely academic rationalist, rather than socially critical, approach. The interviews revealed three underlying themes that help to explain the sort of curriculum that is found: (1) a pragmatic utilitarian concern for the urban environment of Singapore; (2) a school and examination system that is still largely focused towards traditional disciplinary knowledge; and (3) the overriding influence of government and the balance that it prioritises between environment, economic development, social stability, nation building and external image.published_or_final_versio

    Prevalence, Concordance, and Heritability of Vitreomacular Interface Abnormalities in a Twin Study

    PURPOSE: The relative importance of genetic factors in common vitreomacular interface (VMI) abnormalities is unknown. The aim of this classical twin study is to determine the prevalence case wise concordance between monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs, and heritability of common VMI abnormalities, including epiretinal membrane (ERM), posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), vitreomacular adhesion (VMA), vitreomacular traction (VMT), lamellar macular holes (LMHs), and full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs). METHODS: This is a single-center, cross-sectional classical twin study of 3406 TwinsUK participants over the age of 40 years who underwent spectral domain macular optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) scans which were graded for signs of VMI abnormalities. Case wise concordance was calculated and the heritability of each VMI abnormality was estimated using OpenMx structural equation modeling. RESULTS: In this population (mean age = 62.0 years [SD = 10.4 years], range = 40–89 years) the overall prevalence of ERM was 15.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 14.4–16.9) and increased with age, posterior vitreous detachment affected 21.3% (20.0–22.7), and VMA was diagnosed in 11.8% (10.8–13.0). Monozygotic twins were more concordant for all traits than dizygotic twins, and age, spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and lens status-adjusted heritability was estimated at 38.9% (95% CI = 33.6–52.8) for ERM, 53.2% (95% CI = 41.8–63.2) for PVD, and 48.1% (95% CI = 33.6–58) for VMA. CONCLUSIONS: Common VMI abnormalities are heritable and therefore have an underlying genetic component. Given the sight-threatening potential of VMI abnormalities, further genetic studies, such as genomewide association studies, would be useful to identify genes and pathways implicated in their pathogenesis

    A baseline evaluation of oceanographic and sea ice conditions in the Hudson Bay Complex during 2016-2018

    In this paper, we examine sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and sea ice conditions in the Hudson Bay Complex as a baseline evaluation for the BaySys 2016–2018 field program time frame. Investigated in particular are spatiotemporal patterns in SST and sea ice state and dynamics, with rankings of the latter to highlight extreme conditions relative to the examined 1981–2010 climatology. Results from this study show that SSTs in northwestern Hudson Bay from May to July, 2016–2018, are high relative to the climatology for SST (1982–2010). SSTs are also warmer in 2016 and 2017 than in 2018 relative to their climatology. Similarly, unusually low sea ice cover existed from August to December of 2016 and July to September of 2017, while unusually high sea ice cover existed in January, February, and October of 2018. The ice-free season was approximately 20 days longer in 2016 than in 2018. Unusually high ice-drift speeds occurred in April of 2016 and 2017 and in May of 2018, coinciding with strong winds in 2016 and 2018 and following strong winds in March 2017. Strong meridional circulation was observed in spring of 2016 and winter of 2017, while weak meridional circulation existed in 2018. In a case study of an extreme event, a blizzard from 7 to 9 March 2017, evaluated using Lagrangian dispersion statistics, is shown to have suppressed sea ice deformation off the coast of Churchill. These results are relevant to describing and planning for possible future pathways and scenarios under continued climate change and river regulation

    Detailed Clinical, Ophthalmic, and Genetic Characterization of ADGRV1-Associated Usher Syndrome

    Purpose: To present the clinical characteristics, retinal features, natural history, and genetics of ADGRV1-Usher syndrome (USH). Design: Multicenter international retrospective cohort study. Methods: Clinical notes, hearing loss history, multimodal retinal imaging, and molecular diagnosis were reviewed. Thirty patients (28 families) with USH type 2 and disease-causing variants in ADGRV1 were identified. Visual function, retinal imaging, and genetics were evaluated and correlated, with retinal features also compared with those of the commonest cause of USH type 2, USH2A-USH. Results: The mean age at the first visit was 38.6 ± 12.0 years (range: 19-74 years), and the mean follow-up time was 9.0 ± 7.7 years. Hearing loss was reported in the first decade of life by all patients, 3 (10%) described progressive loss, and 93% had moderate-severe impairment. Visual symptom onset was at 17.0 ± 7.7 years of age (range: 6-32 years), with 13 patients noticing problems before the age of 16. At baseline, 90% of patients had no or mild visual impairment. The most frequent retinal features were a hyperautofluorescent ring at the posterior pole (70%), perimacular patches of decreased autofluorescence (59%), and mild-moderate peripheral bone-spicule–like deposits (63%). Twenty-six (53%) variants were previously unreported, 19 families (68%) had double-null genotypes, and 9 were not-double-null. Longitudinal analysis showed significant differences between baseline and follow-up central macular thickness (−1.25 µm/y), outer nuclear layer thickness (−1.19 µm/y), and ellipsoid zone width (−40.9 µm/y). The rate of visual acuity decline was 0.02 LogMAR (1 letter)/y, and the rate of constriction of the hyperautofluorescent ring was 0.23 mm2/y. Conclusions: ADGRV1-USH is characterized by early-onset, usually non-progressive, mild-to-severe hearing loss and generally good central vision until late adulthood. Perimacular atrophic patches and relatively retained ellipsoid zone and central macular thickness in later adulthood are more often seen in ADGRV1-USH than in USH2A-USH

    Simulational study of anomalous tracer diffusion in hydrogels

    In this article, we analyze different factors that affect the diffusion behavior of small tracer particles (as they are used e.g.in fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS)) in the polymer network of a hydrogel and perform simulations of various simplified models. We observe, that under certain circumstances the attraction of a tracer particle to the polymer network strands might cause subdiffusive behavior on intermediate time scales. In theory, this behavior could be employed to examine the network structure and swelling behavior of weakly crosslinked hydrogels with the help of FCS.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

    A baseline evaluation of atmospheric and river discharge conditions in the Hudson Bay Complex during 2016-2018

    In this article, we examine atmospheric and river discharge conditions within the Hudson Bay Complex for the BaySys 2016–2018 field program time frame. Investigated in particular is a subset of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis - Interim (ERA-Interim) atmospheric forcing variables, namely 2-m surface temperature, 10-m surface winds, precipitation, and sea-level pressure, in addition to river discharge. Results from this assessment show that 2016 was characterized by unusually warm conditions (terrestrial and marine) throughout the annual cycle; 2017 by strong cyclone activity in March and high precipitation in January, October, and November; and 2018 by cold and windy conditions throughout the annual cycle. Evaluation of terrestrial conditions showed higher than normal land surface temperatures (the Hudson Bay physical watershed) for all of the 2016–2018 period (excluding a colder than normal spell August–November 2018), particularly in January (2016 and 2017), higher than normal precipitation in October (2016 and 2017), and higher than normal terrestrial discharge to the Hudson Bay Complex in March (2016 and 2017), with drier than average June through October (2016–2018)

    Health behavior modification after electron beam computed tomography and physician consultation

    This study aimed to determine whether participants reported altering health behaviors (physical activity, diet, and alcohol consumption) after seeing results from an electron-beam computed tomography (EBCT) scan for coronary artery calcium and reviewing these results with a physician. Clinicians attempt to motivate patients to control cardiovascular risk factors by adopting healthy behaviors and reducing harmful actions. Asymptomatic patients (N = 510) were evaluated by EBCT for the extent of coronary artery calcium. Information pertaining to demographics, health history, and lifestyle/health behaviors was obtained from each participant at the time of the EBCT scan. Patients were given their numerical calcium score, shown images of their coronary arteries, and counseled by a physician for lifestyle and medical risk modification based on their coronary artery calcium score. Approximately 6 years after the scan, participants completed a follow-up questionnaire related to lifestyle modifications. In multivariable analysis, the presence and extent of coronary artery calcium was significantly associated with beneficial health behavior modifications. Specifically, the greater a patient’s coronary artery calcium score, the more likely they were to report increasing exercise (odds ratio = 1.34, P = 0.02), changing diet (odds ratio = 1.40, P < 0.01), and changing alcohol intake (odds ratio = 1.46, P = 0.05). This study suggests that seeing and being counseled on the presence and extent of coronary artery calcium is significantly associated with behavior change

    Simulated impacts of relative climate change and river discharge regulation on sea ice and oceanographic conditions in the Hudson Bay Complex

    In this analysis, we examine relative contributions from climate change and river discharge regulation to changes in marine conditions in the Hudson Bay Complex using a subset of five atmospheric forcing scenarios from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), river discharge data from the Hydrological Predictions for the Environment (HYPE) model, both naturalized (without anthropogenic intervention) and regulated (anthropogenically controlled through diversions, dams, reservoirs), and output from the Nucleus for European Modeling of the Ocean Ice-Ocean model for the 1981–2070 time frame. Investigated in particular are spatiotemporal changes in sea surface temperature, sea ice concentration and thickness, and zonal and meridional sea ice drift in response to (i) climate change through comparison of historical (1981–2010) and future (2021–2050 and 2041–2070) simulations, (ii) regulation through comparison of historical (1981–2010) naturalized and regulated simulations, and (iii) climate change and regulation combined through comparison of future (2021–2050 and 2041–2070) naturalized and regulated simulations. Also investigated is use of the diagnostic known as e-folding time spatial distribution to monitor changes in persistence in these variables in response to changing climate and regulation impacts in the Hudson Bay Complex. Results from this analysis highlight bay-wide and regional reductions in sea ice concentration and thickness in southwest and northeast Hudson Bay in response to a changing climate, and east-west asymmetry in sea ice drift response in support of past studies. Regulation is also shown to amplify or suppress the climate change signal. Specifically, regulation amplifies sea surface temperatures from April to August, suppresses sea ice loss by approximately 30% in March, contributes to enhanced sea ice drift speed by approximately 30%, and reduces meridional circulation by approximately 20% in January due to enhanced zonal drift. Results further suggest that the offshore impacts of regulation are amplified in a changing climate

    Search algorithms as a framework for the optimization of drug combinations

    Combination therapies are often needed for effective clinical outcomes in the management of complex diseases, but presently they are generally based on empirical clinical experience. Here we suggest a novel application of search algorithms, originally developed for digital communication, modified to optimize combinations of therapeutic interventions. In biological experiments measuring the restoration of the decline with age in heart function and exercise capacity in Drosophila melanogaster, we found that search algorithms correctly identified optimal combinations of four drugs with only one third of the tests performed in a fully factorial search. In experiments identifying combinations of three doses of up to six drugs for selective killing of human cancer cells, search algorithms resulted in a highly significant enrichment of selective combinations compared with random searches. In simulations using a network model of cell death, we found that the search algorithms identified the optimal combinations of 6-9 interventions in 80-90% of tests, compared with 15-30% for an equivalent random search. These findings suggest that modified search algorithms from information theory have the potential to enhance the discovery of novel therapeutic drug combinations.
