The impact of an extreme climatic disturbance and different fertilization treatments on plant development, phenology, and yield of two cultivar groups of Solanum betaceum Cav
[EN] Changing climatic conditions impose a challenge both to biodiversity and food security. The effects of climate change affect different aspects of the plant or crop, such as morphological and phenological aspects, as well as yield. The effects of greenhouse conditions might be comparable in some cases to a permanent extreme disturbance in climate and weather, thus, contributing to our knowledge on climate change impacts on plant species. We have investigated the differences for 23 traits in two cultivar groups of an Andean traditional crop, Solanum betaceum, under two different environmental conditions that correspond to the traditional practices in the open field and three cultural managements under greenhouse conditions (no fertilization or control, organic, and mineral). We found that traditional practices in the open field are the less productive. Moreover, in warmer and drier conditions the treatment with organic fertilization was the most productive. Greenhouse conditions, however, delay production. We further identified traits that differentiate both cultivar groups and traits that are linked to either the new climate conditions or the fertilization treatments. Fruit characteristics were quite homogeneous between the two cultivar groups. Overall, our results provide insight on the consequences that climate change effects might exert on crops such as tree tomato, reveal that greenhouses can be a robust alternative for tree tomato production, and highlight the need to understand how different managements are linked to different solutions to fulfil the farmers' demands.M.X.R.-G. was funded by Secretaria Nacional de Educacion Superior, Ciencia, Tecnologia e Innovacion (SENESCYT: www.educacionsuperior.gob.ec/) with a Prometeo Fellowship. Empathy Manipulation Impacts Music-Induced Emotions: A Psychophysiological Study on Opera
This study investigated the effects of voluntarily empathizing with a musical performer (i.e., cognitive empathy) on music-induced emotions and their underlying physiological activity. Nâ=â56 participants watched video-clips of two operatic compositions performed in concerts, with low or high empathy instructions. Heart rate and heart rate variability, skin conductance level (SCL), and respiration rate (RR) were measured during music listening, and music-induced emotions were quantified using the Geneva Emotional Music Scale immediately after music listening. Listening to the aria with sad content in a high empathy condition facilitated the emotion of nostalgia and decreased SCL, in comparison to the low empathy condition. Listening to the song with happy content in a high empathy condition also facilitated the emotion of power and increased RR, in comparison to the low empathy condition. To our knowledge, this study offers the first experimental evidence that cognitive empathy influences emotion psychophysiology during music listening
The influence of a virtual companion on amusement when watching funny films
We investigated the role of a virtual companion and trait cheerfulness on the elicitation of amusement. Ninety participants watched funny films in four conditions: either alone, with a virtual companion laughing or verbally expressing amusement at fixed time points (pre-scripted), or additionally joining the participantâs laughter (responsive companion). Amusement was assessed facially and vocally by coding Duchenne Displays and laughter vocalizations. Participantsâ cheerful mood pre and post the film watching and positive experience were assessed. Results showed that high trait cheerful individuals generally experienced and expressed more amusement than low trait cheerful individuals. The presence of a virtual companion (compared to being alone) led to more laughter for individuals low in trait cheerfulness. Unexpectedly, the responsive companion did not elicit more amusement than the pre-scripted companion. The general disliking of virtual companions and gelotophobia related negatively to amusement. Amusement expressing virtual companions may be used in interventions aiming at eliciting positive responses, especially for individuals with higher thresholds for amusement.European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under Grant Agreement No. 27078
Euclid preparation: X. The Euclid photometric-redshift challenge
Forthcoming large photometric surveys for cosmology require precise and accurate photometric redshift (photo-z) measurements for the success of
their main science objectives. However, to date, no method has been able to produce photo-zs at the required accuracy using only the broad-band
photometry that those surveys will provide. An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current methods is a crucial step in the eventual
development of an approach to meet this challenge. We report on the performance of 13 photometric redshift code single value redshift estimates
and redshift probability distributions (PDZs) on a common set of data, focusing particularly on the 0.2â2.6 redshift range that the Euclid mission
will probe. We designed a challenge using emulated Euclid data drawn from three photometric surveys of the COSMOS field. The data was
divided into two samples: one calibration sample for which photometry and redshifts were provided to the participants; and the validation sample,
containing only the photometry to ensure a blinded test of the methods. Participants were invited to provide a redshift single value estimate and
a PDZ for each source in the validation sample, along with a rejection flag that indicates the sources they consider unfit for use in cosmological
analyses. The performance of each method was assessed through a set of informative metrics, using cross-matched spectroscopic and highlyaccurate photometric redshifts as the ground truth. We show that the rejection criteria set by participants are efficient in removing strong outliers,
that is to say sources for which the photo-z deviates by more than 0.15(1 + z) from the spectroscopic-redshift (spec-z). We also show that, while
all methods are able to provide reliable single value estimates, several machine-learning methods do not manage to produce useful PDZs. We find
that no machine-learning method provides good results in the regions of galaxy color-space that are sparsely populated by spectroscopic-redshifts,
for example z > 1. However they generally perform better than template-fitting methods at low redshift (z < 0.7), indicating that template-fitting
methods do not use all of the information contained in the photometry. We introduce metrics that quantify both photo-z precision and completeness
of the samples (post-rejection), since both contribute to the final figure of merit of the science goals of the survey (e.g., cosmic shear from Euclid).
Template-fitting methods provide the best results in these metrics, but we show that a combination of template-fitting results and machine-learning
results with rejection criteria can outperform any individual method. On this basis, we argue that further work in identifying how to best select
between machine-learning and template-fitting approaches for each individual galaxy should be pursued as a priority
Sediment source fingerprinting: benchmarking recent outputs, remaining challenges and emerging themes
Abstract: Purpose: This review of sediment source fingerprinting assesses the current state-of-the-art, remaining challenges and emerging themes. It combines inputs from international scientists either with track records in the approach or with expertise relevant to progressing the science. Methods: Web of Science and Google Scholar were used to review published papers spanning the period 2013â2019, inclusive, to confirm publication trends in quantities of papers by study area country and the types of tracers used. The most recent (2018â2019, inclusive) papers were also benchmarked using a methodological decision-tree published in 2017. Scope: Areas requiring further research and international consensus on methodological detail are reviewed, and these comprise spatial variability in tracers and corresponding sampling implications for end-members, temporal variability in tracers and sampling implications for end-members and target sediment, tracer conservation and knowledge-based pre-selection, the physico-chemical basis for source discrimination and dissemination of fingerprinting results to stakeholders. Emerging themes are also discussed: novel tracers, concentration-dependence for biomarkers, combining sediment fingerprinting and age-dating, applications to sediment-bound pollutants, incorporation of supportive spatial information to augment discrimination and modelling, aeolian sediment source fingerprinting, integration with process-based models and development of open-access software tools for data processing. Conclusions: The popularity of sediment source fingerprinting continues on an upward trend globally, but with this growth comes issues surrounding lack of standardisation and procedural diversity. Nonetheless, the last 2 years have also evidenced growing uptake of critical requirements for robust applications and this review is intended to signpost investigators, both old and new, towards these benchmarks and remaining research challenges for, and emerging options for different applications of, the fingerprinting approach
