Enhanced Fusion-Evaporation Cross Sections in Neutron-Rich Sn on Ni
Evaporation residue cross sections have been measured with neutron-rich
radioactive Sn beams on Ni in the vicinity of the Coulomb
barrier. The average beam intensity was particles per second
and the smallest cross section measured was less than 5 mb. Large subbarrier
fusion enhancement was observed. Coupled-channels calculations taking into
account inelastic excitation and neutron transfer underpredict the measured

Active Galaxies in the UV
In this article we present different aspects of AGN studies demonstrating the
importance of the UV spectral range. Most important diagnostic lines for
studying the general physical conditions as well as the metalicities in the
central broad line region in AGN are emitted in the UV. The UV/FUV continuum in
AGN excites not only the emission lines in the immediate surrounding but it is
responsible for the ionization of the intergalactic medium in the early stages
of the universe. Variability studies of the emission line profiles of AGN in
the UV give us information on the structure and kinematics of the immediate
surrounding of the central supermassive black hole as well as on its mass

Can forest management based on natural disturbances maintain ecological resilience?
Given the increasingly global stresses on forests, many ecologists argue that managers must maintain ecological resilience: the capacity of ecosystems to absorb disturbances without undergoing fundamental change. In this review we ask: Can the emerging paradigm of natural-disturbance-based management (NDBM) maintain ecological resilience in managed forests? Applying resilience theory requires careful articulation of the ecosystem state under consideration, the disturbances and stresses that affect the persistence of possible alternative states, and the spatial and temporal scales of management relevance. Implementing NDBM while maintaining resilience means recognizing that (i) biodiversity is important for long-term ecosystem persistence, (ii) natural disturbances play a critical role as a generator of structural and compositional heterogeneity at multiple scales, and (iii) traditional management tends to produce forests more homogeneous than those disturbed naturally and increases the likelihood of unexpected catastrophic change by constraining variation of key environmental processes. NDBM may maintain resilience if silvicultural strategies retain the structures and processes that perpetuate desired states while reducing those that enhance resilience of undesirable states. Such strategies require an understanding of harvesting impacts on slow ecosystem processes, such as seed-bank or nutrient dynamics, which in the long term can lead to ecological surprises by altering the forest's capacity to reorganize after disturbance
The inflationary bispectrum with curved field-space
We compute the covariant three-point function near horizon-crossing for a
system of slowly-rolling scalar fields during an inflationary epoch, allowing
for an arbitrary field-space metric. We show explicitly how to compute its
subsequent evolution using a covariantized version of the separate universe or
"delta-N" expansion, which must be augmented by terms measuring curvature of
the field-space manifold, and give the nonlinear gauge transformation to the
comoving curvature perturbation. Nonlinearities induced by the field-space
curvature terms are a new and potentially significant source of
non-Gaussianity. We show how inflationary models with non-minimal coupling to
the spacetime Ricci scalar can be accommodated within this framework. This
yields a simple toolkit allowing the bispectrum to be computed in models with

Quasars and their host galaxies
This review attempts to describe developments in the fields of quasar and
quasar host galaxies in the past five. In this time period, the Sloan and 2dF
quasar surveys have added several tens of thousands of quasars, with Sloan
quasars being found to z>6. Obscured, or partially obscured quasars have begun
to be found in significant numbers. Black hole mass estimates for quasars, and
our confidence in them, have improved significantly, allowing a start on
relating quasar properties such as radio jet power to fundamental parameters of
the quasar such as black hole mass and accretion rate. Quasar host galaxy
studies have allowed us to find and characterize the host galaxies of quasars
to z>2. Despite these developments, many questions remain unresolved, in
particular the origin of the close relationship between black hole mass and
galaxy bulge mass/velocity dispersion seen in local galaxies.Comment: Review article, to appear in Astrophysics Update
Definition and Calculation of Bottom Quark Cross-Sections in Deep-inelastic Scattering at HERA and Determination of their Uncertainties
The uncertainties involved in the calculation of bottom quark cross-sections
in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA are studied in different phase space
regions. Besides the inclusive bottom quark cross-section, definitions closer
to the detector acceptance requiring at least one high energetic muon from the
semi-leptonic \bquark decay or a jet with high transverse energy are
investigated. For each case the uncertainties due to the choice of the
renormalisation and factorisation scale as well as the \bquark mass are
estimated in the perturbative NLO QCD calculation and furthermore uncertainties
in the fragmenation of the bottom quark to a B-meson and in its semi-leptonic
decay are discussed
Large slow-roll corrections to the bispectrum of noncanonical inflation
Nongaussian statistics are a powerful discriminant between inflationary
models, particularly those with noncanonical kinetic terms. Focusing on
theories where the Lagrangian is an arbitrary Lorentz-invariant function of a
scalar field and its first derivatives, we review and extend the calculation of
the observable three-point function. We compute the "next-order" slow-roll
corrections to the bispectrum in closed form, and obtain quantitative estimates
of their magnitude in DBI and power-law k-inflation. In the DBI case our
results enable us to estimate corrections from the shape of the potential and
the warp factor: these can be of order several tens of percent. We track the
possible sources of large logarithms which can spoil ordinary perturbation
theory, and use them to obtain a general formula for the scale dependence of
the bispectrum. Our result satisfies the next-order version of Maldacena's
consistency condition and an equivalent consistency condition for the scale
dependence. We identify a new bispectrum shape available at next-order, which
is similar to a shape encountered in Galileon models. If fNL is sufficiently

A Generalized Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem for Nonlinear Response Functions
A nonlinear generalization of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem (FDT) for
the n-point Green functions and the amputated 1PI vertex functions at finite
temperature is derived in the framework of the Closed Time Path formalism. We
verify that this generalized FDT coincides with known results for n=2 and 3.
New explicit relations among the 4-point nonlinear response and correlation

We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters (\aLC ) for two \LC\
decay modes. Our measurements are \aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} for
the decay mode and \aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm
0.06 for the decay mode . By combining these
measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the
parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes. These amplitudes are used to

A Model for the Development of the Rhizobial and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbioses in Legumes and Its Use to Understand the Roles of Ethylene in the Establishment of these two Symbioses
We propose a model depicting the development of nodulation and arbuscular mycorrhizae. Both processes are dissected into many steps, using Pisum sativum L. nodulation mutants as a guideline. For nodulation, we distinguish two main developmental programs, one epidermal and one cortical. Whereas Nod factors alone affect the cortical program, bacteria are required to trigger the epidermal events. We propose that the two programs of the rhizobial symbiosis evolved separately and that, over time, they came to function together. The distinction between these two programs does not exist for arbuscular mycorrhizae development despite events occurring in both root tissues. Mutations that affect both symbioses are restricted to the epidermal program. We propose here sites of action and potential roles for ethylene during the formation of the two symbioses with a specific hypothesis for nodule organogenesis. Assuming the epidermis does not make ethylene, the microsymbionts probably first encounter a regulatory level of ethylene at the epidermis–outermost cortical cell layer interface. Depending on the hormone concentrations there, infection will either progress or be blocked. In the former case, ethylene affects the cortex cytoskeleton, allowing reorganization that facilitates infection; in the latter case, ethylene acts on several enzymes that interfere with infection thread growth, causing it to abort. Throughout this review, the difficulty of generalizing the roles of ethylene is emphasized and numerous examples are given to demonstrate the diversity that exists in plants
