Use of Cyclic Simple Shear Testing in Evaluation of the Deformation Potential of Liquefiable Soils

    Get PDF
In recent years, a significant research effort has been focused on assessing the performance of structures founded on potentially liquefiable materials. While significant progress has been made on predictive tools for cases in which large deformations are likely, the ability to accurately and reliably predict small to moderate lateral deformations (\u3c1m) has proven more elusive. As a result, there is a universal need for high quality, element-level laboratory test data to calibrate and validate constitutive laws and numerical models for predicting the deformation of soil with limited liquefaction potential. To address this increasingly urgent need, a comprehensive cyclic simple shear testing program on liquefiable sands has been undertaken using the UC Berkeley Bi-directional Simple Shear Device. Many of the tests performed have new and innovative aspects that can provide information and insight into the behavior of soils showing limited deformation potential. Descried in this paper are results from a Kα test series, which replicates sloping ground conditions, and a newly developed and innovative “fabric” test series, which examines the influence of previous loading history on soil fabric and behavior

A comparative study of the physico-chemical characteristics of rice bran during the successive steps of its industrial processing was carried out and included white and parboiled rice brans and pelletized and defatted rice brans. Moisture, acidity and peroxide index were determined. Using extracts in petroleum ether and gas chromatography, the total fat contents and the profiles of the fatty acids were established. The tocopherols and γ-oryzanol were determined using high performance liquid chromatography. The bran of parboiled rice showed the largest fat content and the lowest acidity, indicating that parboiling is the most effective process for bran stabilization. Oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids predominated in all the samples. Pelletization did not produce a loss in lipids, tocopherols or γ-oryzanol. All the samples showed higher contents of α-tocopherol, intermediate contents of γ-tocopherol and much lower concentrations of δ-tocopherol. Nine components of γ- oryzanol were detected, with a major proportion of the component that eluted in the fourth position, probably ferulate of 24-methylene cycloartenol. Pelletized rice bran showed the highest tocopherol content, whereas parboiled rice bran yielded the largest γ-oryzanol [email protected]

Attenuation of Peak Ground Acceleration with Distance of the June 15, 1999, Tehuacán, México, Earthquake

A seismic event of moment magnitude 7.0 struck the central region of Mexico on June 15, 1999 at 15:41 hrs (local time) between the states of Puebla and Oaxaca. The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 20 km to the south-southeast of the town of Tehuacán, Puebla and 55 km to the northeast of Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca. A reconnaissance team consisting of a group of researchers from the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) and the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) visited the area and gathered some preliminary information on the geotechnical aspects of this earthquake. This paper briefly presents some key geotechnical observations and then focuses on the attenuation of peak ground acceleration with distance. A total of 29 strong-motion recordings over a variety of geologic site conditions were compiled and used to develop the observed attenuation of the peak ground acceleration (PGA) with distance for the main event. The results obtained were compared with estimations of PGA using North American attenuation relationships

Recent Advances in Soil Liquefaction Engineering and Seismic Site Response Evaluation

    Get PDF
Over the past decade, major advances have occurred in both understanding and practice with regard to engineering treatment of seismic soil liquefaction and assessment of seismic site response. Seismic soil liquefaction engineering has evolved into a sub-field in its own right, and assessment and treatment of site effects affecting seismic site response has gone from a topic of controversy to a mainstream issue addressed in most modem building codes and addressed in both research and practice. This rapid evolution in the treatment of both liquefaction and site response issues has been pushed by a confluence of lessons and data provided by a series of earthquakes over the past eleven years, as well as by the research and professional/political will engendered by these major seismic events. Although the rate of progress has been laudable, further advances are occurring, and more remains to be done. As we enter a “new millenium”, engineers are increasingly well able to deal with important aspects of these two seismic problem areas. This paper will highlight a few major recent and ongoing developments in each of these two important areas of seismic practice, and will offer insights regarding work/research in progress, as well as suggestions regarding further advances needed. The first part of the paper will address soil liquefaction, and the second portion will (briefly) address engineering assessment of seismic site response

CRABP1, C1QL1 and LCN2 are biomarkers of differentiated thyroid carcinoma, and predict extrathyroidal extension

The prognostic variability of thyroid carcinomas has led to the search for accurate biomarkers at the molecular level. Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is a typical example of differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC) in which challenges are faced in the differential diagnosis. Methods: We used high-throughput paired-end RNA sequencing technology to study four cases of FTC with different degree of capsular invasion: two minimally invasive (mFTC) and two widely invasive FTC (wFTC). We searched by genes differentially expressed between mFTC and wFTC, in an attempt to find biomarkers of thyroid cancer diagnosis and/or progression. Selected biomarkers were validated by real-time quantitative PCR in 137 frozen thyroid samples and in an independent dataset (TCGA), evaluating the diagnostic and the prognostic performance of the candidate biomarkers. Results: We identified 17 genes significantly differentially expressed between mFTC and wFTC. C1QL1, LCN2, CRABP1 and CILP were differentially expressed in DTC in comparison with normal thyroid tissues. LCN2 and CRABP1 were also differentially expressed in DTC when compared with follicular thyroid adenoma. Additionally, overexpression of LCN2 and C1QL1 were found to be independent predictors of extrathyroidal extension in DTC. Conclusions: We conclude that the underexpression of CRABP1 and the overexpression of LCN2 may be useful diagnostic biomarkers in thyroid tumours with questionable malignity, and the overexpression of LCN2 and C1QL1 may be useful for prognostic purposes. This work was financed by FEDER - Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional funds through the COMPETE 2020 - Operacional Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation (POCI), Portugal 2020, and by Portuguese funds through FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia/ Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação in the framework of the project "Institute for Research and Innovation in Health Sciences" (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007274). Varieties of capitalism and resilience clusters: an exploratory approach to European regions

    Get PDF
Regions around the world suffered asymmetric effects with the global economic crisis of the last decade. European regions were not different, and a myriad of impacts with varied magnitudes was felt. This article, inspired by the literature of varieties of capitalism (VoC), presents statistical and econometric evidence about the differences of regional resilience, measured by the variation of economic product, unemployment and R&D across regions in European Union during the economic downturn. An exploratory approach analyses the socio‐economic resilience between different member states, and VoC ideal‐types (liberal market economies, the continental capitalism, the social‐democrat economies, the Mediterranean capitalism, and the Eastern economies). The study presents a typology of resilience clusters in European regions. There were found six types of profiles concerning resilience: great performers, fast growth, intermediate position, R&D reduction, regions in divergence, and Mediterranean regions in big trouble. The study identifies key aspects for resilience, providing policy implications for regional economic policies. The comparison of the resilience clusters and the original VoC categorization has implications for this branch of literature as it does not completely address the variety of regional answers to the shocks.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
