Force to Debond Brackets from High-fusing and Low-fusing Porcelain Systems
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that porcelain surface finishing, ie, low- and high-fusing porcelain, has an effect on the amount of force required to debond orthodontic brackets. A total of 20 high-fusing and 20 low-fusing porcelain specimens were prepared, polished, and bonded with standard edgewise brackets using a suggested porcelain bonding protocol. The brackets were debonded with a universal testing machine at shear mode. Resin removal was performed using two methods: a multifluted carbide bur with and without the use of Sof-Lex polishing discs. Representative specimens were studied under a scanning electron microscope before and after debonding to assess the surface morphology and potential surface damage. Statistical analysis with a t-test revealed that there was no difference between the two porcelain treatments on the force to debond values and no qualitative differences were observed on the porcelain surface between the two resin clean-up methods. From a clinical perspective, the practitioner can bond ceramic restorations without previous knowledge of the porcelain type used
A -adic RanSaC algorithm for stereo vision using Hensel lifting
A -adic variation of the Ran(dom) Sa(mple) C(onsensus) method for solving
the relative pose problem in stereo vision is developped. From two 2-adically
encoded images a random sample of five pairs of corresponding points is taken,
and the equations for the essential matrix are solved by lifting solutions
modulo 2 to the 2-adic integers. A recently devised -adic hierarchical
classification algorithm imitating the known LBG quantisation method classifies
the solutions for all the samples after having determined the number of
clusters using the known intra-inter validity of clusterings. In the successful
case, a cluster ranking will determine the cluster containing a 2-adic

Player Tracking and Stroke Recognition in Tennis Video
In this paper we present an investigation into the computer vision problem of tracking humans in digital video. The investigation domain is digital tennis footage and the aim is to track the tennis player and recognise the strokes played. The motivation behind this investigation is to eventually automate the task of digital tennis footage annotation so that metadata, such as the time codes and a description of the strokes played, are automatically appended to the video. This then enables a number of compelling applications, from simple search facilities for the home viewer, to more complex analysis tools suitable for a tennis coach. The system developed solves the problem of tennis player tracking and stroke recognition using relatively simple, and well known, image processing operations constrained by an a priori knowledge of the image capture conditions, the background scene, and the application domain
Persistent current formation in a high-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate: an experimental test for c-field theory
Experimental stirring of a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at
high temperature generates a disordered array of quantum vortices that decays
via thermal dissipation to form a macroscopic persistent current [T. W. Neely
em et al. arXiv:1204.1102 (2012)]. We perform 3D numerical simulations of the
experimental sequence within the Stochastic Projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation
using ab initio determined reservoir parameters. We find that both damping and
noise are essential for describing the dynamics of the high-temperature Bose
field. The theory gives a quantitative account of the formation of a persistent

Dynamic and Energetic Stabilization of Persistent Currents in Bose-Einstein Condensates
We study conditions under which vortices in a highly oblate harmonically
trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) can be stabilized due to pinning by a
blue-detuned Gaussian laser beam, with particular emphasis on the potentially
destabilizing effects of laser beam positioning within the BEC. Our approach
involves theoretical and numerical exploration of dynamically and energetically
stable pinning of vortices with winding number up to , in correspondence
with experimental observations. Stable pinning is quantified theoretically via
Bogoliubov-de Gennes excitation spectrum computations and confirmed via direct
numerical simulations for a range of conditions similar to those of
experimental observations. The theoretical and numerical results indicate that
the pinned winding number, or equivalently the winding number of the superfluid
current about the laser beam, decays as a laser beam of fixed intensity moves
away from the BEC center. Our theoretical analysis helps explain previous
experimental observations, and helps define limits of stable vortex pinning for
future experiments involving vortex manipulation by laser beams.Comment: 8 pages 5 figure

A spectroscopically confirmed z=1.327 galaxy-scale deflector magnifying a z~8 Lyman-Break galaxy in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies survey
We present a detailed analysis of an individual case of gravitational lensing
of a Lyman-Break galaxy (LBG) in a blank field, identified in Hubble
Space Telescope imaging obtained as part of the Brightest of Reionizing
Galaxies survey. To investigate the close proximity of the bright
() -dropout to a small group of foreground galaxies, we
obtained deep spectroscopy of the dropout and two foreground galaxies using
VLT/X-Shooter. We detect H-, H-, [OIII] and [OII] emission in
the brightest two foreground galaxies (unresolved at the natural seeing of
arcsec), placing the pair at . We can rule out emission lines
contributing all of the observed broadband flux in band at
, allowing us to exclude the candidate as a low redshift
interloper with broadband photometry dominated by strong emission lines. The
foreground galaxy pair lies at the peak of the luminosity, redshift and
separation distributions for deflectors of strongly lensed objects,
and we make a marginal detection of a demagnified secondary image in the
deepest () filter. We show that the configuration can be accurately
modelled by a singular isothermal ellipsoidal deflector and a S\'{e}rsic source
magnified by a factor of . The reconstructed source in the
best-fitting model is consistent with luminosities and morphologies of
LBGs in the literature. The lens model yields a group mass of
and a stellar mass-to-light ratio for the
brightest deflector galaxy of within its effective radius. The foreground galaxies'
redshifts would make this one of the few strong lensing deflectors discovered
