Entanglement of internal and external angular momenta of a single atom
We consider the exchange of spin and orbital angular momenta between a
circularly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam of light and a single atom trapped
in a two-dimensional harmonic potential. The radiation field is treated
classically but the atomic center-of-mass motion is quantized. The spin and
orbital angular momenta of the field are individually conserved upon
absorption, and this results in the entanglement of the internal and external
degrees of freedom of the atom. We suggest applications of this entanglement in

Design and performance of a multicentre, randomized controlled trial of teleconsulting.
We have designed and performed a multicentre, randomized controlled trial of teleconsulting. The trial investigated the effectiveness and cost implications in rural and inner-city settings of using videoconferencing as an alternative to general practitioner referral to a hospital specialist. The participating general practitioners referred a total of 3170 patients who satisfied the entry criteria. Of these, 1040 (33%) failed to provide consent or otherwise refused to participate in the trial. Of the patients recruited to the trial, a total of 1902 (91%) completed and returned the baseline questionnaire. Although the trial was successful in recruiting sufficient patients and in obtaining high questionnaire response rates, the findings will require careful interpretation to take account of the limits which the protocol placed on the ability of general practitioners to select patients for referral
A Multiwavelength Investigation of Unidentified EGRET Sources
Statistical studies indicate that the 271 point sources of high-energy gamma
rays belong to two groups: a Galactic population and an isotropic extragalactic
population. Many unidentified extragalactic sources are certainly blazars, and
it is the intention of this work to uncover gamma-ray blazars missed by
previous attempts. Until recently, searches for blazar counterparts to
unidentified EGRET sources have focused on finding AGN that have 5-GHz radio
flux densities S_5 near or above 1 Jy. However, the recent blazar
identification of 3EG J2006-2321 (S_5 = 260 mJy) and other work suggest that
careful studies of weaker flat-spectrum sources may be fruitful. In this
spirit, error circles of 4 high-latitude unidentified EGRET sources have been
searched for 5-GHz sources. The gamma-ray sources are 3EG J1133+0033, 3EG
J1212+2304, 3EG J1222+2315, and 3EG J1227+4302. Within the error contours of
each of the four sources are found 6 radio candidates; by observing the
positions of the radio sources with the 0.81-m Tenagra II telescope it is
determined that 14 of these 24 radio sources have optical counterparts with R <
22. Eight of these from two different EGRET sources have been observed in the
B, V, and R bands in more than one epoch and the analysis of these data is
ongoing. Any sources that are found to be variable will be the objects of

Evidence for Rotation in the Galaxy at z=3.15 Responsible for a Damped Lyman-alpha Absorption System in the Spectrum of Q2233+1310
Proof of the existence of a significant population of normal disk galaxies at
redshift z>2 would have profound implications for theories of structure
formation and evolution. We present evidence based on Keck HIRES observations
that the damped Lyman-alpha absorber at z=3.15 toward the quasar Q2233+1310 may
well be such an example. Djorgovski et al have recently detected the
Lyman-alpha emission from the absorber, which we assume is at the systemic
redshift of the absorbing galaxy. By examining the profiles of the metal
absorption lines arising from the absorbing galaxy in relation to its systemic
redshift, we find strong kinematical evidence for rotation. Therefore the
absorber is likely to be a disk galaxy. The inferred circular velocity for the
galaxy is >200 km/s. With a separation of ~17 kpc between the galaxy and the
quasar sightline, the implied dynamic mass for the galaxy is >1.6x10(11) solar
mass. The metallicity of the galaxy is found to be [Fe/H]=-1.4, typical of
damped Lyman-alpha galaxies at such redshifts. However, in another damped
galactic rotation is evident. In the latter case, the damped Lyman-alpha
absorber occurs near the background quasar in redshift so its properties may be
influenced by the background quasar. These represent the only two cases at
present for which the technique used here may be applied. Future applications
of the same technique to a large sample of damped Lyman-alpha galaxies may
allow us to determine if a significant population of disk galaxies already

Black people, like other people, grow up in families. This simple observation is a suprise to people who are accustomed to associate the experiences of Black people with slavery, crime, delinquency, civil disorders. The Black historian, Benjamin Quarles (1967) has observed that white America tends to have a distorted perspective on Black life, and the fact of Blacks growing up in a family is a fresh approach to the understanding of socio-cultural aspects of growing up Black (cf. Billingsley, 1968).
The family is society\u27s primary context for meeting a child\u27s biological needs, directing his development into an integrated person living in a society, and transmitting to him its cultures (Lidz, 1974). It is also the setting in which a child\u27s basic trust, autonomy, initiative and sense of industry toward life (cf. Erikson, 1959) are developed. The interaction between societal needs and individual wants (cf. Parsons and Bales, 1955; Winch, 1971) or between the demands of super ego and id defines the family as a mediational setting even though its structure is presently in transition (cf. Skolnick and Skolnick, 1971). Any attempt at studies of child development as an autonomous process, independent of the family, distorts as much as it simplifies the understanding of the growth process
