Numerical Study of Wave Propagation in Uniaxially Anisotropic Lorentzian Backward Wave Slabs
The propagation and refraction of a cylindrical wave created by a line
current through a slab of backward wave medium, also called left-handed medium,
is numerically studied with FDTD. The slab is assumed to be uniaxially
anisotropic. Several sets of constitutive parameters are considered and
comparisons with theoretical results are made. Electric field distributions are
studied inside and behind the slab. It is found that the shape of the
wavefronts and the regions of real and complex wave vectors are in agreement
with theoretical results.Comment: 6 pages, figure
Taming the Heat Flux Problem: Advanced Divertors Towards Fusion Power
The next generation fusion machines are likely to face enormous heat exhaust problems. In addition to summarizing major issues and physical processes connected with these problems, we discuss how advanced divertors, obtained by modifying the local geometry, may yield workable solutions. We also point out that: (1) the initial interpretation of recent experiments show that the advantages, predicted, for instance, for the X-divertor (in particular, being able to run a detached operation at high pedestal pressure) correlate very well with observations, and (2) the X-D geometry could be implemented on ITER (and DEMOS) respecting all the relevant constraints. A roadmap for future research efforts is proposed
Transmission Losses in Left-handed Materials
We numerically analyze the origin of the transmission losses in left-handed
structures. Our data confirms that left handed structures can have very good
transmission properties, in spite of the expectable dispersion of their
effective permeability and refraction index. The large permittivity of the
metallic components improves the transmission. High losses, observed in recent
experiments, could be explained by the absorption of the dielectric board
Guided Modes in Negative Refractive Index Waveguides
We study linear guided waves propagating in a slab waveguide made of a
negative-refraction- index material, the so-called left-handed waveguide. We
reveal that the guided waves in left-handed waveguides possess a number of
peculiar properties, such as the absence of the fundamental modes, mode double
degeneracy, and sign-varying energy ux. In particular, we predict the existence
of novel types of guided waves with a dipole-vortex structure of the Pointing
vector.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Negative refraction and left-handed behavior in two-dimensional photonic crystals
We systematically examine the conditions of obtaining left-handed (LH)
behavior in photonic crystals. Detailed studies of the phase and group
velocities as well as the phase np and group ng refractive index are given. The
existence of negative refraction does not guarantee the existence of negative
index of refraction and so LH behavior. A wedge type of experiment is suggested
that can unambiguously distiguinsh between cases of negative refraction that
occur when left-handed behavior is present, from cases that show negative
refraction without LH behavior.Comment: 4 pages 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B Rapid Communication
