Momentum Analysis in Strong-field Double Ionization

We provide a basis for the laser intensity dependence of the momentum distributions of electrons and ions arising from strong-field non-sequential double ionization (NSDI) at intensities in the range I=16.5×1014W/cm2I=1-6.5 \times 10^{14} W/cm^2. To do this we use a completely classical method introduced previously \cite{ho-etal05}. Our calculated results reproduce the features of experimental observations at different laser intensities and depend on just two distinct categories of electon trajectories.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

VLA Imaging of the Disk Surrounding the Nearby Young Star TW Hya

The TW Hya system is perhaps the closest analog to the early solar nebula. We have used the Very Large Array to image TW Hya at wavelengths of 7mm and 3.6 cm with resolutions 0.1 arcseconds (about 5 AU) and 1.0 arcseconds (about 50 AU), respectively. The 7mm emission is extended and appears dominated by a dusty disk of radius larger than 50 AU surrounding the star. The 3.6 cm emission is unresolved and likely arises from an ionized wind or gyrosynchrotron activity. The dust spectrum and spatially resolved 7mm images of the TW Hya disk are fitted by a simple model with temperature and surface density described by radial power laws, T(r)r0.5T(r)\propto r^{-0.5} and Σ(r)r1\Sigma(r) \propto r^{-1}. These properties are consistent with an irradiated gaseous accretion disk of mass 0.03 M\sim0.03~{\rm M_{\odot}} with an accretion rate 108 Myr1\sim10^{-8}~{\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}} and viscosity parameter α=0.01\alpha = 0.01. The estimates of mass and mass accretion rates are uncertain as the gas-to-dust ratio in the TW Hya disk may have evolved from the standard interstellar value.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ Letter

Self-shadowing Effects of Slim Accretion Disks in Active Galactic Nuclei: Diverse Appearance of the Broad-line Region

Supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) undergo a wide range of accretion rates, which lead to diversity of appearance. We consider the effects of anisotropic radiation from accretion disks on the broad-line region (BLR), from the Shakura-Sunyaev regime to slim disks with super-Eddington accretion rates. The geometrically thick funnel of the inner region of slim disks produces strong self-shadowing effects that lead to very strong anisotropy of the radiation field. We demonstrate that the degree of anisotropy of the radiation fields grows with increasing accretion rate. As a result of this anisotropy, BLR clouds receive different spectral energy distributions depending on their location relative to the disk, resulting in diverse observational appearance of the BLR. We show that the self-shadowing of the inner parts of the disk naturally produces two dynamically distinct regions of the BLR, depending on accretion rate. These two regions manifest themselves as kinematically distinct components of the broad Hβ\beta line profile with different line widths and fluxes, which jointly account for the Lorentzian profile generally observed in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. In the time domain, these two components are expected reverberate with different time lags with respect to the varying ionizing continuum, depending on the accretion rate and the viewing angle of the observer. The diverse appearance of the BLR due to the anisotropic ionizing energy source can be tested by reverberation mapping of Hβ\beta and other broad emission lines (e.g., \feii), providing a new tool to diagnose the structure and dynamics of the BLR. Other observational consequences of our model are also explored.Comment: emulatapj style, 15 pages, 6 figures, in pres

    Noncommutative D-Brane in Non-Constant NS-NS B Field Background

    Get PDF
We show that when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish, the coordinates X and momenta P of an open string endpoints satisfy a set of mixed commutation relations among themselves. Identifying X and P with the coordinates and derivatives of the D-brane world volume, we find a new type of noncommutative spaces which is very different from those associated with a constant B field background.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, minor modification

Supersymmetric reduced models with a symmetry based on Filippov algebra

Generalizations of the reduced model of super Yang-Mills theory obtained by replacing the Lie algebra structure to Filippov nn-algebra structures are studied. Conditions for the reduced model actions to be supersymmetric are examined. These models are related with what we call \{cal N}_{min}=2 super pp-brane actions.Comment: v3: In the previous versions we overlooked that Eq.(3.9) holds more generally, and missed some supersymmetric actions. Those are now included and modifications including a slight change in the title were made accordingly. 1+18 page

Aspects of U-duality in BLG models with Lorentzian metric 3-algebras

In our previous paper, it was shown that BLG model based on a Lorentzian metric 3-algebra gives Dp-brane action whose worldvolume is compactified on torus T^d (d=p-2). Here the 3-algebra was a generalized one with d+1 pairs of Lorentzian metric generators and expressed in terms of a loop algebra with central extensions. In this paper, we derive the precise relation between the coupling constant of the super Yang-Mills, the moduli of T^d and some R-R flux with VEV's of ghost fields associated with Lorentzian metric generators. In particular, for d=1, we derive the Yang-Mills action with theta term and show that SL(2,Z) Montonen-Olive duality is realized as the rotation of two VEV's. Furthermore, some moduli parameters such as NS-NS 2-form flux are identified as the deformation parameters of the 3-algebras. By combining them, we recover most of the moduli parameters which are required by U-duality symmetry.Comment: 27 pages, v2: minor correction

Modulation of inherent dynamical tendencies of the bisabolyl cation via preorganization in epi-isozizaene synthase.

    Get PDF
The relative importance of preorganization, selective transition state stabilization and inherent reactivity are assessed through quantum chemical and docking calculations for a sesquiterpene synthase (epi-isozizaene synthase, EIZS). Inherent reactivity of the bisabolyl cation, both static and dynamic, appears to determine the pathway to product, although preorganization and selective binding of the final transition state structure in the multi-step carbocation cascade that forms epi-isozizaene appear to play important roles

Connections of activated hopping processes with the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation and with aspects of dynamical heterogeneities

We develop a new extended version of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) for glass transition, which incorporates activated hopping processes via the dynamical theory originally formulated to describe diffusion-jump processes in crystals. The dynamical-theory approach adapted here to glass-forming liquids treats hopping as arising from vibrational fluctuations in quasi-arrested state where particles are trapped inside their cages, and the hopping rate is formulated in terms of the Debye-Waller factors characterizing the structure of the quasi-arrested state. The resulting expression for the hopping rate takes an activated form, and the barrier height for the hopping is ``self-generated'' in the sense that it is present only in those states where the dynamics exhibits a well defined plateau. It is discussed how such a hopping rate can be incorporated into MCT so that the sharp nonergodic transition predicted by the idealized version of the theory is replaced by a rapid but smooth crossover. We then show that the developed theory accounts for the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation observed in a variety of fragile glass formers. It is also demonstrated that characteristic features of dynamical heterogeneities revealed by recent computer simulations are reproduced by the theory. More specifically, a substantial increase of the non-Gaussian parameter, double-peak structure in the probability distribution of particle displacements, and the presence of a growing dynamic length scale are predicted by the extended MCT developed here, which the idealized version of the theory failed to reproduce. These results of the theory are demonstrated for a model of the Lennard-Jones system, and are compared with related computer-simulation results and experimental data.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
