    Experimental fatigue and durability assessment plays a prominent role in lightweight design. There is broad evidence, however, that the fatigue strength of materials and structures determined under constant amplitude loading may be not relevant - quantitatively or even qualitively - for variable amplitude or spectrum loading. Various phenomena both on a a microstructural and a macrostructural level constribute to this finding as discussed in the paper including consideration of the fatigue limit, the role of crack growth mechanisms and fracture surface topography, residual stresses, scatter, relative proportions of crack initiation and crack propagation phases, detection of fatigue-critical locations, and ranking of materials and design details. Some general aspects regarding the application of variable amplitude testing for design and clearance purposes such as the required experimental efforts are also considered

    Standardized load-time histories have been used, since servohydraulic testing was introduced, to facilitate the comparison of the test results. Standardized uniaxial load sequences have been developed already for tests with fatigue-prone components of aircraft, helicopters, offshore-structures, wind turbines, rolling mill drives and car-wheel suspensions (CARLOS uniaxial). CARLOS multi is the first multiaxial standard for vertical, lateral, braking and longitudinal loads acting simultaneously on car front-wheel suspensions. It has been derived in cooperation with sixteen companies. The load-time histories are based on measurements with eight cars on public roads (about 5400 km) and the same operating profile which had also been agreed for CARLOS uniaxial. The load-time histories were generated with the help of the so-called guide function concept which guarantees the correct correlations between the four forces. By reducing the load histories to their fatigue-relevant contents the leng th of the return of 40000 km amounts to only approximately five hours. The standard load sequences are time histories with a constant sample rate and stored on PC streamer cartridges which are available on request from LBF

    Sicherheit und Zuverlaessigkeit von Konstruktionen haben heute ein hohes Mass erreicht. Dies wird schon fast als selbstverstaendlich angesehen. Sind Lieferant und Kunde gleichermassen zufrieden, ist wahrscheinlich auch fuer beide die Wirtschaftlichkeit gewaehrleistet. Aber wie weit ist der Weg von der Idee beim Konstrukteur, der eine Kundenanforderung zufriedenstellen moechte, bis zum Betrieb beim Kunden. Wenn man nur ein paar Stichworte der Beitraege, die beim DVM-Tag '97 praesentiert werden und im vorliegenden Band zusammenstellt, erkennt man die Vielfaeltigkeit der Aufgabenstellungen. Regelwerke: - Arbeiten beide nach den gleichen Standards? - Lastannahme: Welches Rechenprogramm aus der Fuelle des Angebots ist am besten geeignet? - Wirtschaftliche Aspekte: Sehen Lieferant und Kunde das Produkt tatsaechlich unter den gleichen Aspekten? -Bauteilfestigkeit: Wir testen ertragbare Beanspruchungen, aber wo liegen die zulaessigen? - 100 Jahre Schadensforschung: Und immer gab es, gibt es und wird es Schaden geben.
