The Flood Last Time: âMuckâ and the uses of history in Kara Walkerâs âRuminationâ on Katrina
Kara Walker describes her book After the Deluge (2007) as âruminationâ on Hurricane Katrina structured in the form of a âvisual essay.â The book combines Walker's own artwork and the works of other artists into âa narrative of fluid symbolsâ in which the overarching analogy of âmurky, toxic watersâ holds the potential to âbecome the amniotic fluid of a potentially new and difficult birth.â This essay considers Walker's use of history within this collection of images to show how the book opens up ways to interrogate Katrina's particular significance as a wholly new, and yet eerily familiar, historical âevent.â Nuancing a reading of Walker's book with reference to James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time (1963), to which After the Deluge implicitly alludes, the essay examines Walker's artistic challenge to the notion that history is a narratable account of a past that precedes the present and demonstrates how that challenge encourages us to think about the potential uses of history within civil rights discourse after Katrina
Research on the properties of circadian systems amenable to study in space
Three areas of inquiry are reported for the Skylab Experiment S-071 whose objective was to study the circadian system of a mammal during space flight. The thermoregulatory behavior of the Perognathus longimembris, or little pocket mouse, was studied under conditions of constant dark and constant temperature in the prolonged weightless environment of Skylab. The following specific questions were studied: (1) the effects of weightlessness on circadian periodicity in the little pocket mouse; (2) stability of the free-running circadian period of body temperature of the little pocket mouse exposed to simulated launch stress; and (3) characteristics of the circadian rhythm of body temperature in the little pocket mouse. Diagrams of the electronic circuitry and hardware used in the experiment are shown and results are given in both graphical and tabular form. The methods used in the experiment are fully documented, along with conclusions and recommendations for future research
Random quantum channels I: graphical calculus and the Bell state phenomenon
This paper is the first of a series where we study quantum channels from the
random matrix point of view. We develop a graphical tool that allows us to
compute the expected moments of the output of a random quantum channel. As an
application, we study variations of random matrix models introduced by Hayden
\cite{hayden}, and show that their eigenvalues converge almost surely. In
particular we obtain for some models sharp improvements on the value of the
largest eigenvalue, and this is shown in a further work to have new
applications to minimal output entropy inequalities.Comment: Several typos were correcte

Farm milk prices tend to be volatile. Dairy farmers, industry pundits, and policymakers further tend to react to price volatility with alarm. One point of concern is the response of retail prices. This study investigates farm-to-retail price transmission in the 2000s for whole milk and cheddar cheese. Results show that price shocks at the farm gate are transmitted with delay and asymmetry to retail. Farm milk prices in the United States fluctuated throughout the 2000-2009 decade. Dairy farmers, industry pundits, and policymakers all reacted with much alarm. One point of concern has been the response of retail prices to farm price volatility. This study investigates farm-to-retail price transmission for two major dairy products â whole milk and Cheddar cheese â in the 2000s. Results show that price shocks at the farm gate were transmitted asymmetrically to retail. We prove that for a programmable measurement device that approximates every
POVM with an error , the dimension of the program space has to grow
at least polynomially with . In the case of qubits we can
improve the general result by showing a linear growth. This proves the
optimality of the programmable measurement devices recently designed in [G. M.

Shoreline configuration and shoreline dynamics: A mesoscale analysis
The author has identified the following significant results. Atlantic coast barrier island shorelines are seldom straight, but rather sinuous. These shoreline curvatures range in size from cusps to capes. Significant relationships exist between the orientation of shoreline segments within the larger of these sinuous features and shoreline dynamics, with coefficients ranging up to .9. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (60 km) and the Outer Banks of North Carolina (130 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery (1:80,000) and high altitude aerial photography (1:120,000). Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes
