Evaluation of an advanced directionally solidified gamma/gamma'-alpha Mo eutectic alloy
An attempt was made to improve on the properties of the candidate jet engine turbine blade material AG-60, a gamma/gamma prime-alpha Mo eutectic composite. Alloy 38 (AG-170) was evaluated in the greatest detail. This alloy, Ni-5.88 A1-29.74 Mo-1.65 V-1.2C Re (weight percent), represents an improvement beyond AG-60, based on mechanical testing of the transverse and/or longitudinal orientations over a range of temperatures in tension, shear, rupture, and rupture after thermal exposure. It is likely that other alloys in the study represent a similar improvement
The sustainable reuse of compost from a new type of olive mill pomace in replacing peat for potted olive tree
The attention for the replacement of peat in growing substrates is increasing due to its
environmental and economic advantages. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the impact
of peat substitution by new type olive mill pomace and its compost on the vegetative activity of
potted olive trees. A new type of humid pomace (hP) derived from an innovative two phase
extraction system and its derived compost (C-hP) are used as total or partial (50% vol/vol)
replacement of peat in olive growing substrate. The main chemical characteristics (moisture,
water extractable organic carbon, total nitrogen, C/N ratio and electrical conductivity) of the hP
and C-hP were measured. In order to evaluate the effects of the peat substitution on the plants
vegetative activity, measurements of mortality, plant height, leaf net photosynthesis and plant
growth (through final destructive measurements) were carried out. The use of hP resulted in a
significant increase of the salinity of the substrate. The water extractable organic carbon
concentration was higher in all substrates where peat was ewplaced and in particular when C-hP
was used. The total replacement of peat with hP caused 100% mortality of the plants while C-hP
can substitute peat up to 50% without causing a significative reduction of the final plant growth
Medical imaging in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis: a review
Schistosomiasis is one of the most important parasitic diseases and it is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas. Clinical and laboratory data are fundamental for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis, but diagnostic imaging techniques such as x-rays, ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) may be helpful in the evaluation of disease severity and complications. In this context, the aim of this review is to explore the actual role of diagnostic imaging in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis, underlining advantages and drawbacks providing information about the utilization of diagnostic imaging techniques in this context. Furthermore, we aim to provide a useful guide regarding imaging features of schistosomiasis for radiology and nuclear medicine physicians of non-endemic countries: in fact, in the last years non-endemic countries have experienced important flows of migrants from endemic areas, therefore it is not uncommon to face cases of this disease in daily practice
A development cooperation Erasmus Mundus partnership for capacity building in earthquake mitigation science and higher education
Successful practices have shown that a community’s capacity to manage and reduce its seismic risk relies on
capitalization on policies, on technology and research results. An important role is played by education, than contribute to
strengthening technical curricula of future practitioners and researchers through university and higher education programs. EUNICE
is a European Commission funded higher education partnership for international development cooperation with the
objective to build capacity of individuals who will operate at institutions located in seismic prone Asian Countries. The project
involves five European Universities, eight Asian universities and four associations and NGOs active in advanced research on
seismic mitigation, disaster risk management and international development. The project consists of a comprehensive mobility
scheme open to nationals from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Maldives, North Korea, Philippines, and Sri Lanka who plan to enroll in school or conduct research at one of five European
partner universities in Italy, Greece and Portugal. During the 2010-14 time span a total number of 104 mobilities are being
involved in scientific activities at the undergraduate, masters, PhD, postdoctoral and academic-staff exchange levels.
Researchers, future policymakers and practitioners build up their curricula over a range of disciplines in the fields of earthquake
engineering, seismology, disaster risk management and urban planning
Levofloxacin Cures Experimental Pneumonic Plague in African Green Monkeys
Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of bubonic plague as well as a rare severe form known as primary pneumonic plague resulting from the inhalation of contaminated aerosols. The relative ease of aerosol preparation and high virulence makes Y. pestis a dangerous bioweapon. The current study describes the treatment of established pneumonic plague with the widely available, broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic levofloxacin in a nonhuman primate model. African green monkeys inhaled a target dose of 100 lethal doses for 50% of animals (LD50) and were monitored for fever and vital signs by telemetry. Fever was the first sign of illness, correlating with bacteremia but preceding radiographic pneumonia, and initiated intravenous levofloxacin treatment in doses designed to mimic antibiotic levels achieved in humans. All animals treated with saline died and all animals completing 10 days of treatment survived, with resolution of high fever within 24–48 hours. We conclude that levofloxacin may be an appropriate broad-spectrum antibiotic for presumptive therapy in an aerosolized bioweapons attack and should be studied for treatment of bubonic plague
EU-NICE, Eurasian University Network for International Cooperation in Earthquakes
Despite the remarkable scientific advancements of earthquake engineering and seismology in many countries,
seismic risk is still growing at a high rate in the world’s most vulnerable communities. Successful practices have shown that a community’s capacity to manage and reduce its seismic risk relies on capitalization on policies, on
technology and research results. An important role is played by education, than contribute to strengthening
technical curricula of future practitioners and researchers through university and higher education programmes.
In recent years an increasing number of initiatives have been launched in this field at the international and global
cooperation level. Cooperative international academic research and training is key to reducing the gap between
advanced and more vulnerable regions. EU-NICE is a European Commission funded higher education
partnership for international development cooperation with the objective to build capacity of individuals who
will operate at institutions located in seismic prone Asian Countries. The project involves five European
Universities, eight Asian universities and four associations and NGOs active in advanced research on seismic
mitigation, disaster risk management and international development.
The project consists of a comprehensive mobility scheme open to nationals from Afghanistan, Bangladesh,
China, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, North Korea, Philippines, and
Sri Lanka who plan to enrol in school or conduct research at one of five European partner universities in Italy,
Greece and Portugal. During the 2010-14 time span a total number of 104 mobilities are being involved in
scientific activities at the undergraduate, masters, PhD, postdoctoral and academic-staff exchange levels.
This high number of mobilities and activities is selected and designed so as to produce an overall increase of
knowledge that can result in an impact on earthquake mitigation. Researchers, future policymakers and
practitioners build up their curricula over a range of disciplines in the fields of engineering, seismology, disaster
risk management and urban planning. Specific educational and research activities focus on earthquake risk
mitigation related topics such as: anti-seismic structural design, structural engineering, advanced computer
structural collapse analysis, seismology, experimental laboratory studies, international and development issues in
disaster risk management, social-economical impact studies, international relations and conflict resolution
The 21Na(p,gamma)22Mg Reaction and Oxygen-Neon Novae
The 21Na(p,gamma)22Mg reaction is expected to play an important role in the
nucleosynthesis of 22Na in Oxygen-Neon novae. The decay of 22Na leads to the
emission of a characteristic 1.275 MeV gamma-ray line. This report provides the
first direct measurement of the rate of this reaction using a radioactive 21Na
beam, and discusses its astrophysical implications. The energy of the important
state was measured to be E= 205.7 0.5 keV with a resonance
strength meV.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
Transperineal Laser Ablation (TPLA) Treatment of Focal Low–Intermediate Risk Prostate Cancer
background: this interventional pilot study aimed to evaluate the short-term (3 years) efficacy of focal laser ablation (FLA) in treating the index lesion of low–intermediate-risk prostate cancer, along with assessing the safety of the procedure (ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT04045756). methods: forty patients aged between 46 and 86 with histologically proven organ-confined prostate cancer and low-to-intermediate progression risk were included. FLA was performed under percutaneous fusion magnetic resonance/ultrasound guidance in a day hospital setting under local anesthesia. patients underwent regular clinical and functional assessments through the international index of erectile function (IIEF-5) and the International prostatism symptom score (IPSS), PSA measurements, post-procedure MRI scans, and biopsies at 36 months or if positive findings were detected earlier. statistical analyses were conducted to assess trends in PSA levels and cavity dimensions over time. results: forty patients were initially included, with fifteen lost to follow-up. At 36 months, a mean PSA reduction of 60% was observed, and 80% of MRI scans showed no signs of in-field clinically significant residual/recurrent cancer. biopsies at 36 months revealed no malignant findings in 20 patients. no deterioration in sexual function or urinary symptoms was recorded. conclusions: FLA appears to be safe, feasible, and effective in the index lesion treatment of low–intermediate-risk prostate cancer, with a high rate of tumor eradication and preservation of quality of life
Joint statement on the role of respiratory rehabilitation in the COVID-19 crisis: the Italian position paper.
Due to an exponential growth of the number of subjects affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the entire Italian healthcare system had to respond promptly and in a very short time with the need of semi-intensive and intensive care units. Moreover, trained dedicated COVID-19 teams consisting of physicians coming from different specialties (intensivists or pneumologists and infectivologists), while respiratory therapists and nurses have been recruited to work on and on with rest.
However, due to still limited and evolving knowledge of COVID-19 disease, there are little recommendations for need in respiratory rehabilitation and physiotherapy interventions. The presentation of this manuscript is the result of a consensus promoted by the Italian societies of respiratory health care professionals who contacted pulmonologists directly involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of COVID-19. The aim was to formulate the more proper and common suggestions to be applied in different hospital settings in offering rehabilitative programs and physiotherapy workforce planning in COVID-19 patients.
Two main areas of intervention were identified: organization and treatment, which were described in this paper to face with the emergency
