First study of the three-gluon static potential in Lattice QCD
We estimate the potential energy for a system of three static gluons in
Lattice QCD. This is relevant for the different models of three-body glueballs
have been proposed in the literature, either for gluons with a constituent
mass, or for massless ones. A Wilson loop adequate to the static hybrid
three-body system is developed. We study different spacial geometries, to
compare the starfish model with the triangle model, for the three-gluon
potential. We also study two different colour structures, symmetric and
antisymmetric, and compare the respective static potentials. A first simulation
is performed in a periodic Lattice, with and fm.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
Schwinger-Dyson equations and the quark-antiquark static potential
In lattice QCD, a confining potential for a static quark-antiquark pair can
be computed with the Wilson loop technique. This potential, dominated by a
linear potential at moderate distances, is consistent with the confinement with
a flux tube, an extended and scalar system also directly observable in lattice
QCD. Quantized flux tubes have also been observed in another class of
confinement, the magnetic confinement in type II superconductors. On the other
hand the solution of Schwinger Dyson Equations, say with the Landau gauge
fixing and the truncation of the series of Feynman diagrams, already at the
rainbow level for the self energy and at the ladder level for the Bethe
Salpeter equation, provides a signal of a possible inverse quartic potential in
momentum space derived from one gluon and one ghost exchange, consistent with
confinement. Here we address the successes, difficulties and open problems of
the matching of these two different perspectives of confinement, the
Schwinger-Dyson perspective versus the flux tube perspective.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figures; talk presented at QCD-TNT, Trento, 7-11 sep

Testing strong gravity with gravitational waves and Love numbers
The LIGO observation of GW150914 has inaugurated the gravitational-wave astronomy era and the possibility of testing gravity in extreme regimes. While distorted black holes are the most convincing sources of gravitational waves, similar signals might be produced also by other compact objects. In particular, we discuss what the gravitational-wave ringdown could tell us about the nature of the emitting object, and how measurements of the tidal Love numbers could help us in understanding the internal structure of compact dark objects
First study of the gluon-quark-antiquark static potential in SU(3) Lattice QCD
We study the long distance interaction for hybrid hadrons, with a static
gluon, a quark and an antiquark with lattice QCD techniques. A Wilson loop
adequate to the static hybrid three-body system is developed and, using a 24^3
x 48 periodic lattice with beta=6.2 and a ~ 0.075 fm, two different geometries
for the gluon-quark segment and the gluon-antiquark segment are investigated.
When these segments are perpendicular, the static potential is compatible with
confinement realized with a pair of fundamental strings, one linking the gluon
to the quark and another linking the same gluon to the antiquark. When the
segments are parallel and superposed, the total string tension is larger and
agrees with the Casimir Scaling measured by Bali. This can be interpreted with
a type-II superconductor analogy for the confinement in QCD, with repulsion of
the fundamental strings and with the string tension of the first topological
excitation of the string (the adjoint string) larger than the double of the
fundamental string tension.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 4 figure
The world-sheet corrections to dyons in the Heterotic theory
All the linear alpha-prime corrections, however excluding the gravitational
Chern-Simons correction, are studied in the toroidally compactified critical
Heterotic string theory. These corrections are computed to the entropy for a
BPS static spherical four dimensional dyonic black hole which represents a
wrapped fundamental string carrying arbitrary winding and momentum charges
along one cycle in the presence of KK-monopole and H-monopole charges
associated to another cycle. It is verified that after the inclusion of the
gravitational Chern-Simons corrections [hep-th/0608182], all the linear
alpha-prime corrections to the entropy for the supersymmetric dyon can be
reproduced by the inclusion of only the Gauss-Bonnet Lagrangian to the
supergravity approximation of the induced Lagrangian.Comment: JHEP style, 17 Pages; v2: a typo corrected ; v3: The coupling of the

On Quantum Special Kaehler Geometry
We compute the effective black hole potential V of the most general N=2, d=4
(local) special Kaehler geometry with quantum perturbative corrections,
consistent with axion-shift Peccei-Quinn symmetry and with cubic leading order
behavior. We determine the charge configurations supporting axion-free
attractors, and explain the differences among various configurations in
relations to the presence of ``flat'' directions of V at its critical points.
Furthermore, we elucidate the role of the sectional curvature at the
non-supersymmetric critical points of V, and compute the Riemann tensor (and
related quantities), as well as the so-called E-tensor. The latter expresses
the non-symmetricity of the considered quantum perturbative special Kaehler
geometry.Comment: 1+43 pages; v2: typo corrected in the curvature of Jordan symmetric

Mass media driven mobilization and online protest: ICTs and the pro East-Timor movement in Portugal
This chapter addresses the Pro East-Timor movement held in Portugal in 1999 and the
role that ICTs and the traditional mass media played in its emergence and orientation. It
aims to identify the pattern of use of these media by the agents directly implicated and,
on the other hand, to ascertain changes prompted by such usage on the underlying
organizational structure and communication fluxes. We do this through the intertwining
of the constructive insights of different analytical approaches in the social movements
field, thus shedding light not only over the societal context in which the protest evolved
and the resources it mobilized but also over the cultural identity framing it promoted.
We highlight the following aspects, all of which are staple features of our analytical
object: a) that this movement qualifies as a networked social movement, that is, a
movement focused on cultural values, acting from the local in an attempt to influence
the global, using the ICTs as a fundamental tool (Castells, 2001: 138); b) that it
illustrates an ability to fruitfully integrate different media, with a central axis on the
Internet; c) that media agents themselves may be assuming a key role in the very
orientation of some protests. Accordingly, the following hypotheses will be tested: on
one hand, that ICTs facilitate traditional forms of protest; on the other hand, that ICTs
are simultaneously a tool used by protesters and sometimes a target of their actions.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Entropy Function for Heterotic Black Holes
We use the entropy function formalism to study the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet
term on the entropy of spherically symmetric extremal black holes in heterotic
string theory in four dimensions. Surprisingly the resulting entropy and the
near horizon metric, gauge field strengths and the axion-dilaton field are
identical to those obtained by Cardoso et. al. for a supersymmetric version of
the theory that contains Weyl tensor squared term instead of the Gauss-Bonnet
term. We also study the effect of holomorphic anomaly on the entropy using our
formalism. Again the resulting attractor equations for the axion-dilaton field
and the black hole entropy agree with the corresponding equations for the
supersymmetric version of the theory. These results suggest that there might be
a simpler description of supergravity with curvature squared terms in which we
supersymmetrize the Gauss-Bonnet term instead of the Weyl tensor squared term.Comment: LaTeX file, 23 pages; v2: references added; v3: minor addition; v4:

Partition functions and elliptic genera from supergravity
We develop the spacetime aspects of the computation of partition functions
for string/M-theory on AdS(3) xM. Subleading corrections to the semi-classical
result are included systematically, laying the groundwork for comparison with
CFT partition functions via the AdS(3)/CFT(2) correspondence. This leads to a
better understanding of the "Farey tail" expansion of Dijkgraaf et. al. from
the point of view of bulk physics. Besides clarifying various issues, we also
extend the analysis to the N=2 setting with higher derivative effects included.Comment: 34 page
