The effects of time-spatial flexibility and new working conditions on employees’ work-life balance
Part-time work, flexible working hours, and home-based teleworking are HR instruments which are used to facilitate reconciliation of work and family life. It can be questioned, however, whether these arrangements really enhance work-life balance. This paper examines whether time-spatial flexibility reduces negative work-home interference, and if so, whether this also holds true for the category of ‘New Employees’ working under so-called ‘New Working Conditions’ which are characterised by professional job autonomy, team working by project, management by objectives, and strict deadlines. Employing survey data collected in 2003 among 807 Dutch employees, it is concluded that time-spatial flexibility does affect the work-life balance of workers positively, also under New Working Conditions. Generally, employees holding a smaller part-time job (12-24 contractual working hours per week) experienced a better work-life balance. In particular, female workers gained from more control over the temporal location of their work. Home-based teleworkers and employees holding larger part-time jobs (25-35 hours per week) did not experience a better work-life balance. In the concluding section, the results of the study are discussed in the context of contemporary Dutch labour market developments
Is green space in the living environment associated with people's feelings of social safety?
Abstract.
The authors investigate whether the percentage of green space in people's living environ-
ment affects their feelings of social safety positively or negatively. More specifically they investigate
the extent to which this relationship varies between urban and rural areas, between groups in the
community that can be identified as more or less vulnerable, and the extent to which different types of
green space exert different influences. The study includes 83736 Dutch citizens who were interviewed
about their feelings of social safety. The percentage of green space in the living environment of each
respondent was calculated, and data analysed by use of a three-level latent variable model, controlled
for individual and environmental background characteristics. The analyses suggest that more green
space in people's living environment is associated with enhanced feelings of social safetyöexcept in
very strongly urban areas, where enclosed green spaces are associated with reduced feelings of social
safety. Contrary to the common image of green space as a dangerous hiding place for criminal activity
which causes feelings of insecurity, the results suggest that green space generally enhances feelings of
social safety. The results also suggest, however, that green space in the most urban areas is a matter
of concern with respect to social safety.
Does shade improve light interception efficiency? A comparison among seedlings from shade-tolerant and -intolerant temperate deciduous tree species
• Here, we tested two hypotheses: shading increases light interception efficiency (LIE) of broadleaved tree seedlings, and shade-tolerant species exhibit larger LIEs than do shade-intolerant ones. The impact of seedling size was taken into account to detect potential size-independent effects on LIE. LIE was defined as the ratio of mean light intercepted by leaves to light intercepted by a horizontal surface of equal area. • Seedlings from five species differing in shade tolerance (Acer saccharum, Betula alleghaniensis, A. pseudoplatanus, B. pendula, Fagus sylvatica) were grown under neutral shading nets providing 36, 16 and 4% of external irradiance. Seedlings (1- and 2-year-old) were three-dimensionally digitized, allowing calculation of LIE. • Shading induced dramatic reduction in total leaf area, which was lowest in shade-tolerant species in all irradiance regimes. Irradiance reduced LIE through increasing leaf overlap with increasing leaf area. There was very little evidence of significant size-independent plasticity of LIE. • No relationship was found between the known shade tolerance of species and LIE at equivalent size and irradiance

DNA cleavage and antitumour activity of platinum(II) and copper(II) compounds derived from 4-methyl-2-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminophenol: spectroscopic, electrochemical and biological investigation
The reaction of the redox-active ligand, Hpyramol (4-methyl-2-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminophenol) with K2PtCl4 yields monofunctional square-planar [Pt(pyrimol)Cl], PtL-Cl, which was structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. This compound unexpectedly cleaves supercoiled double-stranded DNA stoichiometrically and oxidatively, in a non-specific manner without any external reductant added, under physiological conditions. Spectro-electrochemical investigations of PtL-Cl were carried out in comparison with the analogue CuL-Cl as a reference compound. The results support a phenolate oxidation, generating a phenoxyl radical responsible for the ligand-based DNA cleavage property of the title compounds. Time-dependent in vitro cytotoxicity assays were performed with both PtL-Cl and CuL-Cl in various cancer cell lines. The compound CuL-Cl overcomes cisplatin-resistance in ovarian carcinoma and mouse leukaemia cell lines, with additional activity in some other cells. The platinum analogue, PtL-Cl also inhibits cell-proliferation selectively. Additionally, cellular-uptake studies performed for both compounds in ovarian carcinoma cell lines showed that significant amounts of Pt and Cu were accumulated in the A2780 and A2780R cancer cells. The conformational and structural changes induced by PtL-Cl and CuL-Cl on calf thymus DNA and phi X174 supercoiled phage DNA at ambient conditions were followed by electrophoretic mobility assay and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The compounds induce extensive DNA degradation and unwinding, along with formation of a monoadduct at the DNA minor groove. Thus, hybrid effects of metal-centre variation, multiple DNA-binding modes and ligand-based redox activity towards cancer cell-growth inhibition have been demonstrated. Finally, reactions of PtL-Cl with DNA model bases (9-Ethylguanine and 5'-GMP) followed by NMR and MS showed slow binding at Guanine-N7 and for the double stranded self complimentary oligonucleotide d(GTCGAC)(2) in the minor groove
Working time flexibility components and working time regimes in Europe: using company-level data across 21 countries
Working time ?exibility comprises a wide variety of arrangements, from part-time,
overtime, to long-term leaves. Theoretical approaches to grouping these arrangements
have been developed, but empirical underpinnings are rare. This article investigates
the bundles that can be found for various ?exible working time arrangements, using the
Establishment Survey on Working Time and Work–Life Balance, 2004/2005, covering 21
EU member states and 13 industries. The results from the factor analyses con?rmed that
working time arrangements can be grouped into two bundles, one for the employee-centred
arrangements and second for the employer-centred arrangements, and that these two
bundles are separate dimensions.Wealso tested the stability of the factor analysisoutcome,
showing that although we ?nd some deviations from the pan-Europe and pan-industry
outcome, the naming of the components as ?exibility for employees and ?exibility for
employers can be considered rather stable. Lastly, we ?nd three country clusters for the 21
European countries using the bundle approach. The ?rst group includes the Northern
European countries along side Poland and Czech Republic, the second group the
continental European countries with UK and Ireland, and lastly, the southern European
countries with Hungary and Slovenia
Morbidity related to defunctioning ileostomy closure after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and low colonic anastomosis
Purpose Defunctioning ileostomies are widely performed in order to prevent or treat anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery. The aim of the present study was to determine morbidity related to stoma closure and to identify predictive factors of a complicated postoperative course. Methods A consecutive series of 138 patients were retrospectively analyzed after stoma reversal. Data collection included general demographics and surgery-related aspects. Morbidity related to stoma closure was retrieved from our prospectively collected registry of complications. Results In 74 of 138 patients, defunctioning ileostomy was performed after restorative proctocolectomy and ileal pouchanal anastomosis (IPAA). The remaining ileostomies (n=64) were constructed after a low colorectal or coloanal anastomosis. A total of 46 complications were recorded in 28 patients resulting in an overall complication rate of 20.3%. Anastomotic leakage rate was 4.3%, and reoperation rate was 8.0%. The number of complications according to the Clavien-Dindo classification was 5 for grade I (10.9%), 26 for grade II (56.5%), 13 for grade III (28.3%), 1 for grade IV (2.2%), and 1 for grade V (2.2%). Multivariate analysis revealed a significantly higher ASA score in the complicated group (P=0.015, odds ratio 2.6, 95% confidence interval 1.2-5.6). Conclusions Closure of a defunctioning ileostomy is associated with 20% morbidity and a reoperation rate of 8%. There is an urgent need for criteria on which a more selective use of a defunctioning ileostomy after low colonic anastomosis or IPAA can be based given its associated morbidit
