Tetragonal states from epitaxial strain on metal films
The tetragonal states produced by isotropic pseudomorphic epitaxial strain in
the (001) plane on a tetragonal phase of a crystal are calculated for V, Ti,
Rb, Li, K, Sr from first-principles electronic theory. It is shown that each
metal has two tetragonal phases corresponding to minima of the total energy
with respect to tetragonal deformations, hence are equilibrium phases, and that
the equilibrium phases are separated by a region of inherent instability. The
equilibrium phase for any strained tetragonal state can thus be uniquely
identified. Lattice constants and relative energies of the two phases and the
saddle point between them are tabulated, as well as the tetragonal elastic

Magnetism and unusual Cu valency in quadruple perovskites
We study a selection of Cu-containing magnetic quadruple perovskites
(CaCuTiO, LaCuFeO, and
YCuCoO) by ab initio calculations, and show that Cu is in an
effective divalent Cu(II)-like state or a trivalent Cu(III) state depending on
the choice of octahedral cation. Based on the electronic structure, we also
discuss the role of Mott and Zhang-Rice physics in this materials class.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
High Performances Corrugated Feed Horns for Space Applications at Millimetre Wavelengths
We report on the design, fabrication and testing of a set of high performance
corrugated feed horns at 30 GHz, 70 GHz and 100 GHz, built as advanced
prototypes for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the ESA Planck mission.
The electromagnetic designs include linear (100 GHz) and dual shaped (30 and 70
GHz) profiles. Fabrication has been achieved by direct machining at 30 GHz, and
by electro-formation at higher frequencies. The measured performances on side
lobes and return loss meet the stringent Planck requirements over the large
(20%) instrument bandwidth. Moreover, the advantage in terms of main lobe shape
and side lobes levels of the dual profiled designs has been demonstrated.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental

Strained tetragonal states and Bain paths in metals
Paths of tetragonal states between two phases of a material, such as bcc and
fcc, are called Bain paths. Two simple Bain paths can be defined in terms of
special imposed stresses, one of which applies directly to strained epitaxial
films. Each path goes far into the range of nonlinear elasticity and reaches a
range of structural parameters in which the structure is inherently unstable.
In this paper we identify and analyze the general properties of these paths by
density functional theory. Special examples include vanadium, cobalt and
copper, and the epitaxial path is used to identify an epitaxial film as related

Event Detection in Optical Signals via Domain Adaptation
Data-driven models trained in an end-to-end manner can reliably detect events within optical signals. Unfortunately, event detection models poorly generalize when monitoring signals collected from devices with different acquisition procedures. We overcome this limitation by presenting a novel domain adaptation solution for event detection networks that enables inference across multiple types of devices. Rather than training a black-box detection network, we decouple event localization and classification tasks. Localization is performed by the Interval Proposal Algorithm (IPA), which leverages signal processing techniques to localize candidate events and derive context features. These events are then standardized and fed to a feature extractor to obtain morphological features. By combining domain-specific context features with domain-invariant morphological features, the classifier achieves good generalization capabilities through different domains. Our method can successfully detect events in OTDR traces achieving a [email protected] of 75.33% on traces from the source domain and generalizing well ([email protected] of 69.27%) on traces from the target domain, despite being trained solely from the source domain
Oscillator strengths with pseudopotentials
The time-dependent local-density approximation (TDLDA) is shown to remain
accurate in describing the atomic response of IB elements under the additional
approximation of using pseudopotentials to treat the effects of core electrons.
This extends the work of Zangwill and Soven who showed the utility of the

Unexpected hypoxia-dependent erythropoietin secretion during experimental conditions not affecting tissue oxygen supply/demand ratio
Unexpected hypoxia-dependent erythropoietin secretion during experimental conditions not affecting tissue oxygen supply/demand ratio. Although a great deal of evidence supports the hypothesis that plasma erythropoietin (EPO) levels of mammals are related to the oxygen supply to the tissues relative to their oxygen needs, several observations millitate against its inherent simplicity. This study presents our results obtained from in vivo experiments that suggest that hypoxia-dependent EPO production can be altered by conditions which apparently do not modify the tissue oxygen supply/demand ratio. Hypoxia-dependent EPO production rate (EPO-PR), derived from plasma EPO titers and plasma EPO half-lives, were estimated in both transfused-polycythemic and normocy-themic mouse models subjected to different treatments. From calculations of the o2 carrying capacity of blood and body o2 consumption, it was assumed that the tissue supply/demand ratios were similar in both experimental and control mice of the same model at the time of induction of EPO production. The following observations were worth noting: (1) EPO-PRs in transfused polycythemic mice whose erythropoietic rates were stimulated by intermittent exposure to hypobaria (0·5 atm, 18 hr/day × 3 weeks), phenylhydrazine administration (40 mg/kg at weekly intervals × 3 weeks) or repeated rh-EPO injections (1500 U/kg 3 times a week × 3 weeks) before transfusion were more than five times higher than in comparabily polycythemic mice whose erythropoietic rates were not stimulated previously; and (2) EPO-PR in response to hypobaric hypoxia was 2·08 times normal in normocythemic mice with cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg) induced depression of erythropoiesis, and 0·33 times normal in normocythemic mice with rh-EPO (400 U/kg × 2) induced enhancement of erythropoiesis. Although the results obtained in polycythemic mice are difficult to explain, those from normocythemic mice suggest the existence of a feedback mechanism between EPO-responsive cells and EPO-producing cells. Both demonstrate the existence of experimental conditions in which modulation of the hypoxia-dependent expression of the EPO gene appears to occur. This modulation would be dependent on factors other than oxygen
Stable and Metastable Structures of Cobalt on Cu(001): An ab initio Study
We report results of density-functional theory calculations on the
structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of (1x1)-structures of Co on
Cu(001) for coverages up to two monolayers. In particular we discuss the
tendency towards phase separation in Co islands and the possibility of
segregation of Cu on top of the Co-film. A sandwich structure consisting of a
bilayer Co-film covered by 1ML of Cu is found to be the lowest-energy
configuration. We also discuss a bilayer c(2x2)-alloy which may form due to
kinetic reasons, or be stabilized at strained surface regions. Furthermore, we
study the influence of magnetism on the various structures and, e.g., find that
Co adlayers induce a weak spin-density wave in the copper substrate.Comment: 11 pages including 4 figures. Related publications can be found at
