    Autobiographical memory: A candidate latent vulnerability mechanism for psychiatric disorder following childhood maltreatment

    BACKGROUND: Altered autobiographical memory (ABM) functioning has been implicated in the pathogenesis of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and may represent one mechanism by which childhood maltreatment elevates psychiatric risk. AIMS: To investigate the impact of childhood maltreatment on ABM functioning. METHOD: Thirty-four children with documented maltreatment and 33 matched controls recalled specific ABMs in response to emotionally-valenced cue words during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). RESULTS: Children with maltreatment experience showed reduced hippocampal and increased middle temporal and para-hippocampal activation during positive ABM recall compared to peers. During negative ABM recall they exhibited increased amygdala activation, and greater amygdala connectivity with the salience network. CONCLUSIONS: Childhood maltreatment is associated with altered ABM functioning, specifically reduced activation in areas encoding specification of positive memories, and greater activation of the salience network for negative memories. This pattern may confer latent vulnerability to future depression and post-traumatic stress disorder

    Nonlinear effects of multifrequency hydrodynamic instabilities on ablatively accelerated thin shells

    Two-dimensional numerical simulations of ablatively accelerated thin-shell fusion targets, susceptible to rupture and failure by Rayleigh–Taylor instability, are presented. The results show that nonlinear effects of Rayleigh–Taylor instability are manifested in the dynamics of the "bubble" (head of the nonlinear fluid perturbation) rather than in the dynamics of the spike (tail of the perturbation). The role of multiwavelength perturbations on the shell is clarified, and rules are presented to predict the dominant nonlinear mode-mode interactions which limit shell performance. It is also shown that the essential dynamics of strongly driven flows are governed by the classical Rayleigh–Taylor instability of an ideal, incompressible, thin fluid layer

    Neural processing associated with cognitive and affective Theory of Mind in adolescents and adults

    Theory of Mind (ToM) is the ability to attribute thoughts, intentions and beliefs to others. This involves component processes, including cognitive perspective taking (cognitive ToM) and understanding emotions (affective ToM). This study assessed the distinction and overlap of neural processes involved in these respective components, and also investigated their development between adolescence and adulthood. While data suggest that ToM develops between adolescence and adulthood, these populations have not been compared on cognitive and affective ToM domains. Using fMRI with 15 adolescent (aged 11–16 years) and 15 adult (aged 24–40 years) males, we assessed neural responses during cartoon vignettes requiring cognitive ToM, affective ToM or physical causality comprehension (control). An additional aim was to explore relationships between fMRI data and self-reported empathy. Both cognitive and affective ToM conditions were associated with neural responses in the classic ToM network across both groups, although only affective ToM recruited medial/ventromedial PFC (mPFC/vmPFC). Adolescents add- itionally activated vmPFC more than did adults during affective ToM. The specificity of the mPFC/vmPFC response during affective ToM supports evidence from lesion studies suggesting that vmPFC may integrate affective information during ToM. Furthermore, the differential neural response in vmPFC between adult and adolescent groups indicates developmental changes in affective ToM processing

    Thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) is a non-contact technique for measuring the distribution of stress in the surface of a component subject to cyclic loading by using a sensitive infrared camera. The stress concentrations indicative of a crack can be located and tracked using an optical flow method, allowing the position of the crack-tip to be identified at a given time. Acoustic emission (AE) has been used to validate the TSA algorithm. AE events from cracking, located using the Delta-T Mapping method, were detected several seconds before the TSA algorithm first detected cracking; however, TSA provided significantly more accurate location information

    Mechanical Forces Due to Lightning Strikes to Aircraft A Pseudo-Stereo DIC Technique for Measuring Full-Field Displacement

    Abstract. One of the major considerations currently affecting the design of composite aircraft structures is the damage resulting from lightning attachment. Full-field measurements of the displacement of materials under lightning attachment would provide a greater understanding of the forces induced by the high current waveform. Furthermore the understanding of the forces involved would allow for the validation of finite element models to simulate the effects of lightning attachment, therefore aiding in the design of solutions to reduce damage to aircraft structures. The study aimed to develop a pseudo-stereo high speed digital image correlation technique in order to obtain full-field information during lightning attachment based on a 100kA initial strike over a 500μs duration, the most severe waveform experienced. The technique that was developed gave full-field measurements for a 550x550x2mm 6082-T6 aluminium panel under a 100kA lightning attachment. Two correlation measurements were recorded at 3000 and 5000 frames per second. The displacement results are comparative with the theory of a cylindrical pressure expansion arising from the acoustic shockwave on attachment to the material. Further developments to this system could allow for more reliable results and higher frame rates which can be used to develop finite element simulations based on measured physical data

    Comparisons of disease cluster patterns, prevalence and health factors in the USA, Canada, England and Ireland

    Abstract Background Identification of those who are most at risk of developing specific patterns of disease across different populations is required for directing public health policy. Here, we contrast prevalence and patterns of cross-national disease incidence, co-occurrence and related risk factors across population samples from the U.S., Canada, England and Ireland. Methods Participants (n = 62,111) were drawn from the US Health and Retirement Study (n = 10,858); the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Ageing (n = 36,647); the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (n = 7938) and The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (n = 6668). Self-reported lifetime prevalence of 10 medical conditions, predominant clusters of multimorbidity and their specific risk factors were compared across countries using latent class analysis. Results The U.S. had significantly higher prevalence of multimorbid disease patterns and nearly all diseases when compared to the three other countries, even after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, income, employment status, education, alcohol consumption and smoking history. For the U.S. the most at-risk group were younger on average compared to Canada, England and Ireland. Socioeconomic gradients for specific disease combinations were more pronounced for the U.S., Canada and England than they were for Ireland. The rates of obesity trends over the last 50 years align with the prevalence of eight of the 10 diseases examined. While patterns of disease clusters and the risk factors related to each of the disease clusters were similar, the probabilities of the diseases within each cluster differed across countries. Conclusions This information can be used to better understand the complex nature of multimorbidity and identify appropriate prevention and management strategies for treating multimorbidity across countries

    Egocentric image captioning for privacy-preserved passive dietary intake monitoring

    Camera-based passive dietary intake monitoring is able to continuously capture the eating episodes of a subject, recording rich visual information, such as the type and volume of food being consumed, as well as the eating behaviors of the subject. However, there currently is no method that is able to incorporate these visual clues and provide a comprehensive context of dietary intake from passive recording (e.g., is the subject sharing food with others, what food the subject is eating, and how much food is left in the bowl). On the other hand, privacy is a major concern while egocentric wearable cameras are used for capturing. In this article, we propose a privacy-preserved secure solution (i.e., egocentric image captioning) for dietary assessment with passive monitoring, which unifies food recognition, volume estimation, and scene understanding. By converting images into rich text descriptions, nutritionists can assess individual dietary intake based on the captions instead of the original images, reducing the risk of privacy leakage from images. To this end, an egocentric dietary image captioning dataset has been built, which consists of in-the-wild images captured by head-worn and chest-worn cameras in field studies in Ghana. A novel transformer-based architecture is designed to caption egocentric dietary images. Comprehensive experiments have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and to justify the design of the proposed architecture for egocentric dietary image captioning. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that applies image captioning for dietary intake assessment in real-life settings

    Core conditions for alpha heating attained in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion

    It is shown that direct-drive implosions on the OMEGA laser have achieved core conditions that would lead to significant alpha heating at incident energies available on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) scale. The extrapolation of the experimental results from OMEGA to NIF energy assumes only that the implosion hydrodynamic efficiency is unchanged at higher energies. This approach is independent of the uncertainties in the physical mechanism that degrade implosions on OMEGA, and relies solely on a volumetric scaling of the experimentally observed core conditions. It is estimated that the current best-performing OMEGA implosion [Regan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 025001 (2016)10.1103/PhysRevLett.117.025001] extrapolated to a 1.9 MJ laser driver with the same illumination configuration and laser-target coupling would produce 125 kJ of fusion energy with similar levels of alpha heating observed in current highest performing indirect-drive NIF implosions.United States.
