Designing multilingual information access to Tate Online
The Tate is Britain's premier national art gallery and includes content from internationally-renowned artists such as Constable and Turner. Like most cultural heritage institutions, the Tate provides online access to a large amount of digitized material. Given the international importance of content provided by the Tate Gallery, multilingual access would seem an ideal way in which to increase accessibility to the collections, and thereby increase traffic to the website. In this short paper we propose using the Tate as a case study for cross-language research and evaluation, determining the galleryâs requirements and the multilingual needs of their end-users
NICMOS and VLBA observations of the gravitational lens system B1933+503
NICMOS observations of the complex gravitational lens system B1933+503 reveal
infrared counterparts to two of the inverted spectrum radio images. The
infrared images have arc-like structures. The corresponding radio images are
also detected in a VLBA map made at 1.7 GHz with a resolution of 6 mas. We fail
to detect two of the four inverted radio spectrum components with the VLBA even
though they are clearly visible in a MERLIN map at the same frequency at a
different epoch. The absence of these two components could be due to rapid
variability on a time-scale less than the time delay, or to broadening of the
images during propagation of the radio waves through the ISM of the lensing
galaxy to an extent that they fall below the surface brightness detectability
threshold of the VLBA observations. The failure to detect the same two images
with NICMOS is probably due to extinction in the ISM of the lensing galaxy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRA
Analysis of the effects of Brexit on the UKâs ability to achieve the climate change acts target 2030
Purpose: This paper evaluates the UKâs departure from the European Union (EU) and how this will influence the emissions output. Methodological approach: Relationships between emissions and empirical generalizations related to the UKâs departure from the EU were detected through an extensive literature review adopting an inductive approach. The delphi methodology was used to collect the opinion of experts via semi structured interviews from where themes were identified with the use of Nvivo. Finally, a triangulation was made by synthesizing the qualitative data with the literature to determine the impacts of the UKâs departure from the EU on emissions. Findings: The work provides evidence that the UKâs decisions to leave the EU will have multiple detrimental long-term consequences to the achievability of the fifth carbon budget. Research limitation: This study considers the opinion of a limited group of experts and consequently, more in depth research is required to better assess the wider range of variables and perspectives affecting the current decision making process and policy related with the UKâs environmental commitments Originality and value: Under the actual eclectic dynamic surrounding the Brexit, a plethora of distorted empirical studies addressing its consequences have emerged. This work provides a comprehensive overview of a largely understudied set of opinions and analysis of possible consequences Brexit poses. This paper opens a debate and invites new perspectives to be included to an increasingly neglected contemporary issue, and contributes as a reference for the future discussion of environmental policy in the UK. Death is not a success: reflections on business exit
This article is a critical evaluation of claims that business exits should not be seen as failures, on the grounds that may constitute voluntary liquidation, or because they are learning opportunities. This can be seen as further evidence of bias affecting entrepreneurship research, where failures are repackaged as successes. This article reiterates that the majority of business exits are unsuccessful. Drawing on ideas from the organisational life course, it is suggested that business âdeathâ is a suitable term for describing business closure. Even cases of voluntary âharvest liquidationâ such as retirement can be meaningfully described as business deaths
Gravitational lensing statistics with extragalactic surveys. II. Analysis of the Jodrell Bank-VLA Astrometric Survey
We present constraints on the cosmological constant from
gravitational lensing statistics of the Jodrell Bank-VLA Astrometric Survey
(JVAS). Although this is the largest gravitational lens survey which has been
analysed, cosmological constraints are only comparable to those from optical
surveys. This is due to the fact that the median source redshifts of JVAS are
lower, which leads to both relatively fewer lenses in the survey and a weaker
dependence on the cosmological parameters. Although more approximations have to
be made than is the case for optical surveys, the consistency of the results
with those from optical gravitational lens surveys and other cosmological tests
indicate that this is not a major source of uncertainty in the results.
However, joint constraints from a combination of radio and optical data are
much tighter. Thus, a similar analysis of the much larger Cosmic Lens All-Sky
Survey should provide even tighter constraints on the cosmological constant,
especially when combined with data from optical lens surveys.
At 95% confidence, our lower and upper limits on ,
using the JVAS lensing statistics information alone, are respectively -2.69 and
0.68. For a flat universe, these correspond to lower and upper limits on
\lambda_{0} of respectively -0.85 and 0.84. Using the combination of JVAS
lensing statistics and lensing statistics from the literature as discussed in
Quast & Helbig (Paper I) the corresponding values are
-1.78 and 0.27. For a flat universe, these correspond to lower and upper limits

Enhanced Zeeman splitting in Ga0.25In0.75As quantum point contacts
The strength of the Zeeman splitting induced by an applied magnetic field is
an important factor for the realization of spin-resolved transport in
mesoscopic devices. We measure the Zeeman splitting for a quantum point contact
etched into a Ga0.25In0.75As quantum well, with the field oriented parallel to
the transport direction. We observe an enhancement of the Lande g-factor from
|g*|=3.8 +/- 0.2 for the third subband to |g*|=5.8 +/- 0.6 for the first
subband, six times larger than in GaAs. We report subband spacings in excess of
10 meV, which facilitates quantum transport at higher temperatures.Comment: [Version 2] Revtex4, 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in

Lensing galaxies: light or dark?
In a recent paper, Hawkins (1997) argues on the basis of statistical studies
of double-image gravitational lenses and lens candidates that a large
population of dark lenses exists and that these outnumber galaxies with more
normal mass-to-light ratios by a factor of 3:1. If correct, this is a very
important result for many areas of astronomy including galaxy formation and
cosmology. In this paper we discuss our new radio-selected gravitational lens
sample, JVAS/CLASS, in order to test and constrain this proposition. We have
obtained ground-based and HST images of all multiple-image lens systems in our
sample and in 12 cases out of 12 we find the lensing galaxies in the optical
and/or near infrared. Our success in finding lensing galaxies creates problems
for the dark lens hypothesis. If it is to survive, ad hoc modifications seem to
be necessary: only very massive galaxies (more than about one trillion solar
masses) can be dark, and the cutoff in mass must be sharp. Our finding of lens
galaxies in all the JVAS/CLASS systems is complementary evidence which supports
the conclusion of Kochanek et al. (1997) that many of the wide-separation
optically-selected pairs are physically distinct quasars rather than

CFHT AO Imaging of the CLASS Gravitational Lens System B1359+154
We present adaptive optics imaging of the CLASS gravitational lens system
B1359+154 obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) in the
infrared K band. The observations show at least three brightness peaks within
the ring of lensed images, which we identify as emission from multiple lensing
galaxies. The results confirm the suspected compound nature of the lens, as
deduced from preliminary mass modeling. The detection of several additional
nearby galaxies suggests that B1359+154 is lensed by the compact core of a
small galaxy group. We attempted to produce an updated lens model based on the
CFHT observations and new 5-GHz radio data obtained with the MERLIN array, but
there are too few constraints to construct a realistic model at this time. The
uncertainties inherent with modeling compound lenses make B1359+154 a
challenging target for Hubble constant determination through the measurement of
differential time delays. However, time delays will offer additional
constraints to help pin down the mass model. This lens system therefore
presents a unique opportunity to directly measure the mass distribution of a

FĂschlĂĄr is a system for recording, indexing, browsing and playback of broadcast TV programmes which has been operational on our University campus for almost 18 months. In this paper we give a brief overview of how the system operates, how TV programmes are organised for browse/playback and a short report on the system usage by over 900 users in our University
Prevalence and risk factors for mast cell tumours in dogs in England
BACKGROUND: Mast cell tumour (MCT) appears to be a frequent tumour type in dogs, though there is little published in relation to its frequency in dogs in the UK. The current study aimed to investigate prevalence and risk factors for MCTs in dogs attending English primary-care veterinary practices. METHODS: Electronic patient records from practices participating in the VetCompass animal surveillance project between July 2007 and June 2013 were searched for MCT diagnosis. Various search terms and standard diagnostic terms (VeNom codes) identified records containing MCT diagnoses, which were evaluated against clinical criteria for inclusion to the study. MCT prevalence for the entire dataset and specific breed types were calculated. Descriptive statistics characterised MCT cases and multivariable logistic regression methods evaluated risk factors for association with MCT (Pâ<â0.05). RESULTS: Within a population of 168,636 dogs, 453 had MCT, yielding a prevalence of 0.27% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.24% - 0.29%). The highest breed type specific prevalences were for the Boxer at 1.95% (95% CI 1.40% - 2.51%), Golden Retriever at 1.39% (0.98% - 1.81%) and Weimaraner at 0.85% (95% CI 0.17% to 1.53%). Age, insurance status, neuter status, weight and breed type were associated with MCT diagnosis. Of dogs of specific breed type, the Boxer, Pug and Staffordshire Bull Terrier showed greater odds of MCT diagnosis compared with crossbred dogs. Conversely, the German Shepherd Dog, Border Collie, West Highland White Terrier, Springer Spaniel and Cocker Spaniel had reduced odds of MCT diagnosis compared with crossbred dogs. No association was found between MCT diagnosis and sex. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study highlights a clinically significant prevalence of MCT and identifies specific breed types with predisposition to MCT, potentially aiding veterinarian awareness and facilitating diagnosis
