Studies of acoustic emission from point and extended sources
The use of simulated and controlled acoustic emission signals forms the basis of a powerful tool for the detailed study of various deformation and wave interaction processes in materials. The results of experiments and signal analyses of acoustic emission resulting from point sources such as various types of indentation-produced cracks in brittle materials and the growth of fatigue cracks in 7075-T6 aluminum panels are discussed. Recent work dealing with the modeling and subsequent signal processing of an extended source of emission in a material is reviewed. Results of the forward problem and the inverse problem are presented with the example of a source distributed through the interior of a specimen
A crystal base for the genetic code
The quantum enveloping algebra U_q(sl(2) \oplus sl(2)) in the limit q \to 0
is proposed as a symmetry algebra for the genetic code. In this approach the
triplets of nucleotids or codons in the DNA chain are classified in crystal
bases, tensor product of U_{q \to 0}(sl(2) \oplus sl(2)) representations. Such
a construction might be compared to the baryon classification from quark
building blocks in elementary particles physics, one of the main differences
standing in the property of a crystal base to provide a natural order in the
state constituents, this order being crucial in the codon. Then an operator
ensuring the correspondence codon/amino-acid can be constructed out of the
above algebra. It will be called the reading operator, and be such that two
codons relative to the same (resp. different) amino-acid(s) acquire the same

Constraints on Asian and European sources of methane from Ch 4-C2H6-CO correlations in Asian outflow
Aircraft observations of Asian outflow from the Transport and Chemical Evolution Over the Pacific (TRACE-P) aircraft mission over the NW Pacific (March and April 2001) show large CH4 enhancements relative to background, as well as strong CH4-C2H 6-CO correlations that provide signatures of regional sources. We apply a global chemical transport model simulation of the CH4-C2H6-CO system for the TRACE-P period to interpret these observations in terms of CH4 sources and to explore in particular the unique constraints from the CH 4-C2H6-CO correlations. We use as a priori a global CH4 source inventory constrained with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL) surface observations [Wang et al., 2004]. We find that the observed CH4 concentration enhancements and CH4-C2H6-CO correlations in Asian outflow in TRACE-P are deterinined mainly by anthropogenic emissions from China and Eurasia (defined here as Europe and eastern Russia), with only little contribution from tropical sources (wetlands and biomass burning). The a priori inventory overestimates the observed CH4 enhancements and shows regionally variable biases for the CH4/C2H6 slope. The CH 4/CO slopes are simulated without significant bias. Matching both the observed CH4 enhancements and the CH 4-C2H6-CO slopes in Asian outflow requires increasing the east Asian anthropogenic source of CH 4, and decreasing the Eurasian anthropogenic source, by at least 30% for both. The need to increase the east Asian source is driven by the underestimate of the CH4/C2H 6 slope in boundary layer Chinese outflow. The Streets et al. [2003] anthropogenic emission inventory for east Asia fits this constraint by increasing CH4 emissions from that region by 40% relative to the a priori, largely because of higher livestock and landfill source estimates. Eurasian sources (mostly European) then need to be reduced by 30-50% from the a priori value of 68 Tg yr -1. The decrease of European sources could result in part from recent mitigation of emissions from coal mining and landfills. Copyright 2004 by the American Geophysical Union
Improved quantification of Chinese carbon fluxes using CO2/CO correlations in Asian outflow
[1] We use observed CO2:CO correlations in Asian outflow from the TRACE-P aircraft campaign (FebruaryâApril 2001), together with a three-dimensional global chemical transport model (GEOS-CHEM), to constrain specific components of the east Asian CO2 budget including, in particular, Chinese emissions. The CO2/CO emission ratio varies with the source of CO2 (different combustion types versus the terrestrial biosphere) and provides a characteristic signature of source regions and source type. Observed CO2/CO correlation slopes in east Asian boundary layer outflow display distinct regional signatures ranging from 10â20 mol/mol (outflow from northeast China) to 80 mol/mol (over Japan). Model simulations using best a priori estimates of regional CO2 and CO sources from Streets et al. [2003] (anthropogenic), the CASA model (biospheric), and Duncan et al. [2003] (biomass burning) overestimate CO2 concentrations and CO2/CO slopes in the boundary layer outflow. Constraints from the CO2/CO slopes indicate that this must arise from an overestimate of the modeled regional net biospheric CO2 flux. Our corrected best estimate of the net biospheric source of CO2 from China for MarchâApril 2001 is 3200 Gg C/d, which represents a 45 % reduction of the net flux from the CASA model. Processes of Change in Psychotherapy for Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
The present study aims at determining the role for outcome of potential processes of change in psychotherapy for narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). They were examined on three levels: the content, the process, and the relationship. A total of 161 patients suffering with NPD were recruited in a naturalistic setting as part of the present study. They underwent a long- term clarification-oriented psychotherapy. Sessions 15, 20, and 25 were video- or audio-recorded and analyzed with an observer-rated instrument that measures the quality of the interaction processes from the patient's and therapist's perspectives. Different self-report measures were used to assess therapy outcomes. In-session improvement was observed in both patient and therapist processes across sessions. Patient improvement in the three levels of processes was systematically related with outcome. Only partial relationships were found between therapist improvement and outcome. The present study represents the first systematic insight into core changes in patients with NPD undergoing psychotherapy

Cytotoxic lymphomas comprise a spectrum of peripheral T-cell lymphomas that can have a initial or late cutaneous presentation. We describe a 46-year-old man from Cape Verde, with a dermatosis involving his face and trunk, consisting of monomorphic papules with a smooth surface and both motor and sensory polyneuropathy.The hypothesis of leprosy was supported by the clinical and initial hystopathological findings and the patient was referred to our hospital with suspected Hansen's disease. In the new skin and lymph node biopsies a lymphocyte population was identified whose immunohystochemistry study allowed the diagnosis of T-cell lymphoma with expression of cytotoxic markers. The patient was started on chemotherapy with initial remission of the skin lesions but, subsequently, progression of systemic disease.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Subtypes of narcissistic personality disorder based on psychotherapy process: A longitudinal nonparametric analysis.
The present study aims at empirically exploring subtypes of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), based on patient descriptors of the psychotherapeutic process. Subtype identification and characterization of NPD is central, in particular, to increase diagnostic precision, linking categorical and dimensional conceptualizations of psychopathology, and to individualize treatments. A total of N = 161 patients diagnosed with NPD undergoing clarification-oriented psychotherapy were included in the present reanalysis of a naturalistic pre-post process-outcome study. At three crucial time-points of the therapy (Sessions 15, 20, and 25), the patient's in-session quality of content, process, and relationship are assessed using intensive video- and audio analyses. Levels of psychopathology were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed using longitudinal nonparametric analysis. Based on in-session processes across three time-points, a two-subtype solution was retained (optimal vs. suboptimal process qualities). Optimal process quality of time was linked with the intensity of narcissistic symptoms; suboptimal process quality was linked with a variety of general symptom loads and problematic personality traits. The two empirical subtypes were predicted by the quality of real-life functioning with an accuracy of more than 92% and were partially associated with outcome. NPD may be empirically differentiated between patients engaging in optimal psychotherapy process versus those who engage in suboptimal psychotherapy process. This differentiation has reliable clinical predictors at the outset of treatment. âSubjects and Objects: Material Expressions of Love and Loyalty in Seventeenth-Century Englandâ, in special section on âLoyalties and Allegiances in Early Modern Englandâ in Journal of British Studies Vol. 48: 4 (October, 2009)
This article investigates how and where the emotive relations between subject and state were forged and how these ideas were manifested in early modern England. McShane describes an affective economy of loyalty, embodied in cheap and accessible political commodities: decorated objects made of clay, metals, and paper, on which precious household resources of time, money and emotion were spent. She argues that by engendering, inculcating and insinuating codes of political love into peopleâs âemotional, sensual, representational, and communicativeâ lives, âloyalâ goods acted as vehicles and texts for what Victoria Kahn describes as âthe supplementary role of the passionsâ in âforging political obligationâ and the reformulation of âthe duty to loveâ of both subject and king in 17th-century England.
McShaneâs research contributes to a growing theme in scholarship, namely the active consumption of politically significant goods. This essay extends the range of objects under examination to include quotidian household items, shedding light on the dissemination and construction of early modern loyalty across a much wider social scale. The research draws on an extensive survey of collections held at the V&A, the Museum of London, Ashmolean Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum and Burrell Collection. Importantly, by putting illustrated print products back together with other political commodities in the early modern home, creating a broad archive of objects and text-objects where each informs the other, McShaneâs approach challenges the typical social historical methodology, which uses material culture as merely illustrative of textual sources.
