Impurity Effects and Spin Polarizations in a Narrow Quantum Hall System
The temperature dependence of electron spin polarization for a narrow quantum
Hall system shows behavior analogous to that of a two-dimensional system at
major filling factors. At the lowest half-filled quantum Hall state for which
no two-dimensional analog exists, we find a stable spin partially-polarized
system. Periodic Gaussian repulsive impurities (antidots) in such a system
leads to novel spin transitions at and and the
pair-correlation functions provide clues about nature of different ground
states in the system. These results can be explored in optical spectroscopy and
optically pumped NMR Knight shift measurements.Comment: 4 pages, REVTEX, and 4 .ps file
Effect of Fish Meal Level on Growth, Food Digestibility and Fur Properties of Farmed Mink (Mustela Vison)
. Our study sought to determine the effects of normal vs high fish meal levels in the diet on the growing-furring process and apparent food digestibility of farmed male mink (Mustela vison). The subjects were two groups of juvenile dark mink born in May and weaned in August. The experiment started after weaning with two diet groups: (1) normal level of fish meal (NOR), i.e. 4.5% of diet, and (2) high level of fish meal (HIGH), i.e. 10.0% of diet. We found that the mink on the high fishmeal (HIGH) diet consumed slightly more fresh food than the mink on the normal fishmeal diet (NOR) (total consumption 30.6 kg vs 28.1 kg). The mink in the NOR group ingested almost the same amount of food as dry matter and energy as the mink in the HIGH group. On October 22, the body weights of the HIGH group animals were significantly higher than those of the NOR animals. At the final weighing on December 3 (at pelting), a tendency for the body weights of NOR mink was noted to be lower than those of HIGH mink. Skin length was significantly shorter in NOR than in HIGH mink. The number of white wool skins (i.e. fur defect) was higher in NOR than in HIGH mink (4 vs 2 skins). Statistically significant differences in other fur variables were not found between the groups. The apparent digestibility of protein, fat and organic matter was significantly better in HIGH than in NOR mink. Our findings tempt us to conclude that the proportion of fish products, at least those of fishmeal, can be increased in the diet of farm-raised juvenile mink

Theory of the Half-Polarized Quantum Hall States
We report a theoretical analysis of the half-polarized quantum Hall states
observed in a recent experiment. Our numerical results indicate that the ground
state energy of the quantum Hall and states versus spin
polarization has a downward cusp at half the maximal spin polarization. We map
the two-component fermion system onto a system of excitons and describe the
ground state as a liquid state of excitons with non-zero values of exciton
angular momentum.Comment: 4 pages (RevTeX), 3 figures (PostScript), added reference

Cloud-base vertical velocity statistics: a comparison between an atmospheric mesoscale model and remote sensing observations
The statistics of cloud-base vertical velocity simulated by the non-hydrostatic mesoscale model AROME are compared with Cloudnet remote sensing observations at two locations: the ARM SGP site in Central Oklahoma, and the DWD observatory at Lindenberg, Germany. The results show that, as expected, AROME significantly underestimates the variability of vertical velocity at cloud-base compared to observations at their nominal resolution; the standard deviation of vertical velocity in the model is typically 4-6 times smaller than observed, and even more during the winter at Lindenberg. Averaging the observations to the horizontal scale corresponding to the physical grid spacing of AROME (2.5 km) explains 70-80% of the underestimation by the model. Further averaging of the observations in the horizontal is required to match the model values for the standard deviation in vertical velocity. This indicates an effective horizontal resolution for the AROME model of at least 4 times the physically-defined grid spacing. The results illustrate the need for special treatment of sub-grid scale variability of vertical velocities in kilometer-scale atmospheric models, if processes such as aerosol-cloud interactions are to be included in the future

Theory of Incompressible States in a Narrow Channel
We report on the properties of a system of interacting electrons in a narrow
channel in the quantum Hall effect regime. It is shown that an increase in the
strength of the Coulomb interaction causes abrupt changes in the width of the
charge-density profile of translationally invariant states. We derive a phase
diagram which includes many of the stable odd-denominator states as well as a
novel fractional quantum Hall state at lowest half-filled Landau level. The
collective mode evaluated at the half-filled case is strikingly similar to that
for an odd-denominator fractional quantum Hall state.Comment: 4 pages, REVTEX, and 4 .ps file
