Liquid chromatographic determination of efficacy of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in brine shrimp (<i>Artemia</i> spp.) used for prophylactic chemotherapy of fish
The brine shrimp Artemia , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in Artemia franciscana, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. It is based on homogenization of Artemia nauplii in methanol, extraction of lipids with hexane, solid-phase cleanup on C18 cartridges, and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with detection at 210 nm. The method is sensitive (detection limit, on the order of 3 ”g/g with a sample quantity of 30 mg [dry weight]) and reproducible (coefficients of variation, 2.2 and 1.8% for trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole at levels of 79.6 and 257 ”g/g of body weight, respectively). Preliminary quantitative data indicated excellent uptake and persistence of both therapeutic agents in A. franciscana, with levels of 115 ”g/g for trimethoprim and 277 ”g/g for sulfamethoxazole

The possibility of recycling biodegradable waste materials (manure and waste from agricultural crops) into new proteins was investigated through experiments with various aquaticfood chains. The possibility of increasing the biomass yield through recuperation of the lost energy of thermal effluents was continually taken into consideration. The most promising production procedures which could lead to industrial applificatians are: a) the controlled mass production of pickling lobsters (Artemia) in "batch" or "flow through" systems using agricultural wastes, b). the nursery production of edible shell-fish (oysters, Paphia pullastra clams) using microscopic algae which were grown on manure. Units were designed of both types on a semi-industrial scale and were built on the Belgian coast. In conclusion it can also be mentioned that the mass production of water fleas (Daphnia) using manure and agricultural waste gave very encouraging results on a laboratory scale

Active vaccination can be effective as a post-exposure prophylaxis, but the rapidity of the immune response induced, relative to the incubation time of the pathogen, is critical. The content of ascorbic acid and tocopherol in the tissues and eggs of wild <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> during maturation
Variations in the concentrations of ascorbic acid (AA) and tocopherols in association with the gonadal development of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii were investigated in females captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand. Mean ovarian AA levels ranged from 210 to 540 ”g/g dry weight (dw) and were at least 11-fold higher than midgut gland (MG) levels. Variations in ovarian AA levels are believed to be related to the biosynthesis of steroid hormones, the formation of collagen, and the deposition of egg yolk compounds. alpha-Tocopherol (alpha-T) was the predominant form of vitamin E in prawn tissues and eggs. The level of alpha-T in the MG was constant, whereas in the ovaries, it ranged from 143 to 425 ”g/g dw. The incorporation of a-T into the ovary was highly correlated (rÂČ = 0.87) to ovarian lipid levels, which probably reflects the role of this vitamin as a major antioxidant agent. The present results provide further evidence of the essentiality of these vitamins in crustacean reproduction
Energy efficiency considerations in integrated IT and optical network resilient infrastructures
The European Integrated Project GEYSERS - Generalised Architecture for Dynamic Infrastructure Services - is concentrating on infrastructures incorporating integrated optical network and IT resources in support of the Future Internet with special emphasis on cloud computing. More specifically GEYSERS proposes the concept of Virtual Infrastructures over one or more interconnected Physical Infrastructures comprising both network and IT resources. Taking into consideration the energy consumption levels associated with the ICT today and the expansion of the Internet in size and complexity, that incurring increased energy consumption of both IT and network resources, energy efficient infrastructure design becomes critical. To address this need, in the framework of GEYSERS, we propose energy efficient design of infrastructures incorporating integrated optical network and IT resources, supporting resilient end-to-end services. Our modeling results quantify significant energy savings of the proposed solution by jointly optimizing the allocation of both network and IT resources

The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre at the University of Sydney runs large multicentre investigator-initiated clinical trials, takes part in trials of national and international collaborative trial groups and contributes expertise to trials run by others. It also: âą undertakes research into trial methods and is recognised through publications as a leader in trial methodology âą reviews and synthesises evidence from completed trials, and is at the forefront of developments in methods, such as prospective meta-analysis âą advises on trial design and operation, and randomises patients and analyses data for other groups conducting trials, particularly through its Outreach program âą takes a lead in proposing new directions for trial research in Australia, particularly with regard to integrating clinical trials with national policy and clinical practice âą offers placements for postgraduate students in all of these areas âą runs short courses in the design and conduct of clinical trials as part of its undertaking to train people for Australian medical research. Core funding is provided by the NHMRC, and specific projects are funded by government, public and private institutions and the pharmaceutical industry. A novel context ontology to facilitate interoperation of semantic services in environments with wearable devices
The LifeWear-Mobilized Lifestyle with Wearables (Lifewear) project attempts to create Ambient Intelligence (AmI) ecosystems by composing personalized services based on the user information, environmental conditions and reasoning outputs. Two of the most important benefits over traditional environments are 1) take advantage of wearable devices to get user information in a nonintrusive way and 2) integrate this information with other intelligent services and environmental sensors. This paper proposes a new ontology composed by the integration of users and services information, for semantically representing this information. Using an Enterprise Service Bus, this ontology is integrated in a semantic middleware to provide context-aware personalized and semantically annotated services, with discovery, composition and orchestration tasks. We show how these services support a real scenario proposed in the Lifewear project
Ontological representation and governance of business semantics in compliant service networks
The Internet would enable new ways for service innovation and trading, as well as for analysing the resulting value networks, with an unprecedented level of scale and dynamics. Yet most related economic activities remain of a largely brittle and manual nature. Service-oriented business implementations focus on operational aspects at the cost of value creation aspects such as quality and regulatory compliance. Indeed they enforce how to carry out a certain business in a prefixed non-adaptive manner rather than capturing the semantics of a business domain in a way that would enable service systems to adapt their role in changing value propositions. In this paper we set requirements for SDL-compliant business service semantics, and propose a method for their ontological representation and governance. We demonstrate an implementation of our approach in the context of service-oriented Information Governance
