Characterisation and calibration of a scintillating fibre detector with > 4000 multi-anode photomultiplier channels
In the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron a high-resolution coordinate
detector for high-energy particles is operated. It consists of scintillating
fibres with diameters of 4000 multi-anode
photomultiplier channels. It is one of the most modern focal-plane detectors
for magnetic spectrometers world-wide. To correct variations in the detection
efficiency, caused by the different gains and the different optical
transmittances, a fully automated off-line calibration procedure has been
developed. The process includes the positioning of a radioisotope source
alongside the detector plane and the automated acquisition and analysis of the
detector signals. It was possible to characterise and calibrate each individual

Excitonic - vibronic coupled dimers: A dynamic approach
The dynamical properties of exciton transfer coupled to polarization
vibrations in a two site system are investigated in detail. A fixed point
analysis of the full system of Bloch - oscillator equations representing the
coupled excitonic - vibronic flow is performed. For overcritical polarization a
bifurcation converting the stable bonding ground state to a hyperbolic unstable
state which is basic to the dynamical properties of the model is obtained. The
phase space of the system is generally of a mixed type: Above bifurcation chaos
develops starting from the region of the hyperbolic state and spreading with
increasing energy over the Bloch sphere leaving only islands of regular
dynamics. The behaviour of the polarization oscillator accordingly changes from

Femtosecond study of the interplay between excitons, trions, and carriers in (Cd,Mn)Te quantum wells
We present an absorption study of the neutral and positively charged exciton
(trion) under the influence of a femtosecond, circularly polarized, resonant
pump pulse. Three populations are involved: free holes, excitons, and trions,
all exhibiting transient spin polarization. In particular, a polarization of
the hole gas is created by the formation of trions. The evolution of these
populations is studied, including the spin flip and trion formation processes.
The contributions of several mechanisms to intensity changes are evaluated,
including phase space filling and spin-dependent screening. We propose a new
explanation of the oscillator strength stealing phenomena observed in p-doped
quantum wells, based on the screening of neutral excitons by charge carriers.
We have also found that binding heavy holes into charged excitons excludes them
from the interaction with the rest of the system, so that oscillator strength

Poor attention rather than hyperactivity/impulsivity predicts academic achievement in very preterm and full-term adolescents
Background: Very preterm (VP) children are at particular risk for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) of the inattentive subtype. It is unknown whether the neurodevelopmental pathways to academic underachievement are the same as in the general population. This study investigated whether middle childhood attention or hyperactivity/impulsivity problems are better predictors of VP adolescents' academic achievement.
Method: In a geographically defined prospective whole-population sample of VP (<32 weeks gestation) and/or very low birth weight (<1500 g birth weight) (VLBW/VP; n = 281) and full-term control children (n = 286) in South Germany, ADHD subtypes were assessed at 6 years 3 months and 8 years 5 months using multiple data sources. Academic achievement was assessed at 13 years of age.
Results: Compared with full-term controls, VLBW/VP children were at higher risk for ADHD inattentive subtype [6 years 3 months: odds ratio (OR) 2.8, p < 0.001; 8 years 5 months: OR 1.7, p = 0.020] but not for ADHD hyperactive-impulsive subtype (6 years 3 months: OR 1.4, p = 0.396; 8 years 5 months: OR 0.9, p = 0.820). Childhood attention measures predicted academic achievement in VLBW/VP and also full-term adolescents, whereas hyperactive/impulsive behaviour did not.
Conclusions: Attention is an important prerequisite for learning and predicts long-term academic underachievement. As ADHD inattentive subtype and cognitive impairments are frequent in VLBW/VP children, their study may help to identify the neurofunctional pathways from early brain development and dysfunction to attention problems and academic underachievement
Low-energy electronic properties of clean CaRuO: elusive Landau quasiparticles
We have prepared high-quality epitaxial thin films of CaRuO with residual
resistivity ratios up to 55. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the
magnetoresistance and a temperature dependence in the electrical
resistivity only below 1.5 K, whose coefficient is substantially suppressed in
large magnetic fields, establish CaRuO as a Fermi liquid (FL) with
anomalously low coherence scale. Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) dependence is
found between 2 and 25 K. The high sample quality allows access to the
intrinsic electronic properties via THz spectroscopy. For frequencies below 0.6
THz, the conductivity is Drude-like and can be modeled by FL concepts, while
for higher frequencies non-Drude behavior, inconsistent with FL predictions, is
found. This establishes CaRuO as a prime example of optical NFL behavior in

Dendritic cell reconstitution is associated with relapse-free survival and acute GVHD severity in children after allogeneic stem cell transplantation
DCs are potent APCs and key regulators of innate and adaptive immunity. After allo-SCT, their reconstitution in the peripheral blood (PB) to levels similar to those in healthy individuals tends to be slow. We investigate the age- and sex-dependant immune reconstitution of myeloid (mDC) and plasmacytoid DC (pDC) in the PB of 45 children with leukaemia or myelodysplastic syndrome (aged 1-17 years, median 10) after allo-SCT with regard to relapse, acute GVHD (aGVHD) and relapse-free survival. Low pDC/μL PB up to day 60 post SCT are associated with higher incidence of moderate or severe aGVHD (P=0.035), whereas high pDC/μL PB up to day 60 are associated with higher risk of relapse (P<0.001). The time-trend of DCs/μL PB for days 0-200 is a significant predictor of relapse-free survival for both mDCs (P<0.001) and pDCs (P=0.020). Jointly modelling DC reconstitution and complications improves on these simple criteria. Compared with BM, PBSC transplants tend to show slower mDC/pDC reconstitution (P=0.001, 0.031, respectively), but have no direct effect on relapse-free survival. These results suggest an important role for both mDCs and pDCs in the reconstituting immune system. The inclusion of mDCs and pDCs may improve existing models for complication prediction following allo-SCT
On the possibility of spontaneous currents in mesoscopie systems
It is shown that a mesoscopic metallic system can exhibit a phase transition
to a low temperature state with a spontaneous orbital current if it is
sufficiently free of elastic defect scattering. The interaction among the electrons,
which is the reason of the phase transition, is of the magnetic origin
and it leads to an ordered state of the orbital magnetic moments
