Kinetic arrest of the first order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in Ce(Fe0.96_{0.96}Ru0.04_{0.04})2_2 : formation of a magnetic-glass

We present results of dc magnetization and magnetic relaxation study showing the kinetic arrest of a first order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in Ce(Fe0.96_{0.96}Ru0.04_{0.04})2_2. This leads to the formation of a non-ergodic glass-like magnetic state. The onset of the magnetic-glass transformation is tracked through the slowing down of the magnetization dynamics. This glassy state is formed with the assistance of an external magnetic field and this is distinctly different from the well known 'spin-glass' state.Comment: 10 pages of text and 4 figure

Supercooling across first-order phase transitions in vortex matter

    Get PDF
Hysteresis in cycling through first-order phase transitions in vortex matter, akin to the well-studied phenomenon of supercooling of water, has been discussed in literature. Hysteresis can be seen while varying either temperature T or magnetic field H (and thus the density of vortices). Our recent work on phase transitions with two control variables shows that the observable region of metastability of the supercooled phase would depend on the path followed in H-T space, and will be larger when T is lowered at constant H compared to the case when H is lowered at constant T. We discuss the effect of isothermal field variations on metastable supercooled states produced by field-cooling. This path dependence is not a priori applicable to metastability caused by reduced diffusivity or hindered kinetics.Comment: Tex, 8 pages, 3 Postscripts figures. Submitted to Pramana - J. Physic

Lambda hyperonic effect on the normal driplines

A generalized mass formula is used to calculate the neutron and proton drip lines of normal and lambda hypernuclei treating non-strange and strange nuclei on the same footing. Calculations suggest existence of several bound hypernuclei whose normal cores are unbound. Addition of Lambda or, Lambda-Lambda hyperon(s) to a normal nucleus is found to cause shifts of the neutron and proton driplines from their conventional limits.Comment: 6 pages, 4 tables, 0 figur

Interesting thermomagnetic history effects in the antiferromagnetic state of SmMn_2Ge_2

We present results of magnetization measurements showing that the magnetic response of the antiferromagnetic state of SmMn_2Ge_2 depends on the path used in the field(H)-temperature(T) phase space to reach this state. Distinct signature of metastablity is observed in this antiferromagnetic state when obtained via field-cooling/field-warming paths. The isothermal M-H loops show lack of end-point memory, reminiscent of that seen in metastable vortex states near the field-induced first order phase transition in various type-II superconductors.Comment: 11 pages of text and 3 figure
