Adjunctive quetiapine for serotonin reuptake inhibitor-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder: A meta-analysis of randomised controlled treatment trials
Small studies have shown positive effects from adding a variety of antipsychotic agents in patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder who are unresponsive to treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The evidence, however, is contradictory. This paper reports a meta-analysis of existing double-blind randomized placebo-controlled studies looking at the addition of the second-generation antipsychotic quetiapine in such cases. Three studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Altogether 102 individuals were subjected to analysis using Review Manager (4.2.7). The results showed evidence of efficacy for adjunctive quetiapine (< 400 mg/day) on the primary efficacy criterion, measured as changes from baseline in total Yale–Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale scores (P = 0.008), the clinical significance of which was limited by between-study heterogeneity. Rashba Torque Driven Domain Wall Motion in Magnetic Helices
Manipulation of the domain wall propagation in magnetic wires is a key
practical task for a number of devices including racetrack memory and magnetic
logic. Recently, curvilinear effects emerged as an efficient mean to impact
substantially the statics and dynamics of magnetic textures. Here, we
demonstrate that the curvilinear form of the exchange interaction of a magnetic
helix results in an effective anisotropy term and Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya
interaction with a complete set of Lifshitz invariants for a one-dimensional
system. In contrast to their planar counterparts, the geometrically induced
modifications of the static magnetic texture of the domain walls in magnetic
helices offer unconventional means to control the wall dynamics relying on
spin-orbit Rashba torque. The chiral symmetry breaking due to the
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to the opposite directions of the
domain wall motion in left- or right-handed helices. Furthermore, for the
magnetic helices, the emergent effective anisotropy term and
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be attributed to the clear geometrical
parameters like curvature and torsion offering intuitive understanding of the
complex curvilinear effects in magnetism

Wigner phase space distribution as a wave function
We demonstrate that the Wigner function of a pure quantum state is a wave
function in a specially tuned Dirac bra-ket formalism and argue that the Wigner
function is in fact a probability amplitude for the quantum particle to be at a
certain point of the classical phase space. Additionally, we establish that in
the classical limit, the Wigner function transforms into a classical
Koopman-von Neumann wave function rather than into a classical probability
distribution. Since probability amplitude need not be positive, our findings
provide an alternative outlook on the Wigner function's negativity.Comment: 6 pages and 2 figure
Influence of detector collimation on SNR in four different MDCT scanners using a reconstructed slice thickness of 5mm
The purpose of this paper is to compare the influence of detector collimation on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a 5.0mm reconstructed slice thickness for four multi-detector row CT (MDCT) units. SNRs were measured on Catphan test phantom images from four MDCT units: a GE LightSpeed QX/I, a Marconi MX 8000, a Toshiba Aquilion and a Siemens Volume Zoom. Five-millimetre-thick reconstructed slices were obtained from acquisitions performed using detector collimations of 2.0-2.5mm and 5.0mm, 120kV, a 360° tube rotation time of 0.5s, a wide range of mA and pitch values in the range of 0.75-0.85 and 1.25-1.5. For each set of acquisition parameters, a Wiener spectrum was also calculated. Statistical differences in SNR for the different acquisition parameters were evaluated using a Student's t-test (P<0.05). The influence of detector collimation on the SNR for a 5.0-mm reconstructed slice thickness is different for different MDCT scanners. At pitch values lower than unity, the use of a small detector collimation to produce 5.0-mm thick slices is beneficial for one unit and detrimental for another. At pitch values higher than unity, using a small detector collimation is beneficial for two units. One manufacturer uses different reconstruction filters when switching from a 2.5- to a 5.0-mm detector collimation. For a comparable reconstructed slice thickness, using a smaller detector collimation does not always reduce image noise. Thus, the impact of the detector collimation on image noise should be determined by standard deviation calculations, and also by assessing the power spectra of the nois
Diagnostic performance of MRI for detection of intestinal fistulas in patients with complicated inflammatory bowel conditions
The diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for detection of intestinal fistulas, other than perianal, in patients with known complicated inflammatory bowel conditions (CIBC) was investigated. Our study group consisted of 20 patients (12 women, mean age 43years) with CIBC, including Crohn's disease (n=13), colonic diverticulitis (n=3), colitis after radiotherapy (n=3) and of postoperative origin (n=1). Eleven surgically proven enteral fistulas were known in ten (50%) of these patients, being of enterovesical (n=3), enterocolic (n=2), enteroenteral (n=2), rectovaginal (n=2), rectovaginovesical (n=1) and of entercutaneous (n=1) localisation. The other ten patients (50%), used as the control group, showed MR features of CIBC, although without any fistulous tract. Multiplanar T1- and T2-weighted sequences had been performed, including gadolinium-enhanced acquisition with fat saturation (1.5T). MR findings were independently blindly and retrospectively reviewed by three radiologists for the presence and etiology of any fistula, as well as visualization and characterization of the fistulous tract. Results were compared with surgical findings (n=16) and clinical evolution (n=4). Interobserver agreement was calculated. Interobserver agreement kappa for fistula detection was 0.71. Overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for fistula detection were 78.6%, 75% and 77.2%, respectively. Sensitivity for fistula characterization was 80.6%, with visualization of the fistulous tract in all cases, whereby T1-weighted gadolinium-enhanced fat-saturated images were considered the most useful sequences. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI is a reliable and reproducible tool for detection of enteral fistulas secondary to inflammatory condition
Out-of-surface vortices in spherical shells
The interplay of topological defects with curvature is studied for
out-of-surface magnetic vortices in thin spherical nanoshells. In the case of
easy-surface Heisenberg magnet it is shown that the curvature of the underlying
surface leads to a coupling between the localized out-of-surface component of
the vortex with its delocalized in-surface structure, i.e. polarity-chirality
