European air quality maps 2005 including uncertainty analysis
The objective of this report is (a) the updating and refinement of European air quality maps based on annual statistics of the 2005 observational data reported by EEA Member countries in 2006, and (b) the further improvement of the interpolation methodologies. The paper presents the results achieved and an uncertainty analysis of the interpolated maps and builds upon earlier reports from Horalék et al. (2005; 2007)
FAIRMODE: A FORUM FOR AIR QUALITY MODELLING IN EUROPE
FAIRMODE (Forum for AIR quality MODelling in Europe) is an air quality modelling network that was established as a
joint initiative of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and European Commissionâs Joint Research Centre (JRC). In a
common effort EEA and JRC aim at responding to the requirements of the new Air Quality Directive, with particular focus on the
introduction of modelling as a necessary tool for air quality assessment and air quality management. The main aim of the modelling
network is to bring together air quality modellers and model users in order to promote and support harmonised use of modelling for
the assessment of air quality by EU and EEA member countries. The network will thus encourage synergy â at a local, national and
European level - through the development and implementation of a common infrastructure based on best practices for reporting and
storing information relevant to air quality modelling. A major objective of the FAIRMODE initiative is to provide guidance to
present and future air quality model users in EEAâs EIONET partnership network. FAIRMODE also aims to enhance awareness of
model usefulness, reliability and accuracy through model validation and intercomparison exercises at a national or European level.
The JRC has taken on a leading role in the co-ordination of the latter activities gaining from its experience in leading the
âEurodeltaâ and âCityDeltaâ intercomparison exercises.
A centralised web portal has been created in support of FAIRMODE, which is currently being used for internal communication
purposes of the network participants, but will also provide the means for exchange of relevant material and experiences between all
interested modellers and model users. The initial activities of the network will be organised by two main Work Groups, focusing on
the preparation of a Guidance Document for model use and on model QA/QC procedures (input data, other uncertainties)
respectively. The progress of the preparation of these documents as well as of the rest of the regular activities of the network will be
reviewed and discussed within the frame of annual Plenary meetings and Steering Committee meetings
Scoping Potential Routes to UK Civil Unrest via the Food System: Results of a Structured Expert Elicitation
We report the results of a structured expert elicitation to identify the most likely types of potential food system disruption scenarios for the UK, focusing on routes to civil unrest. We take a backcasting approach by defining as an end-point a societal event in which 1 in 2000 people have been injured in the UK, which 40% of experts rated as âPossible (20â50%)â, âMore likely than not (50â80%)â or âVery likely (>80%)â over the coming decade. Over a timeframe of 50 years, this increased to 80% of experts. The experts considered two food system scenarios and ranked their plausibility of contributing to the given societal scenario. For a timescale of 10 years, the majority identified a food distribution problem as the most likely. Over a timescale of 50 years, the experts were more evenly split between the two scenarios, but over half thought the most likely route to civil unrest would be a lack of total food in the UK. However, the experts stressed that the various causes of food system disruption are interconnected and can create cascading risks, highlighting the importance of a systems approach. We encourage food system stakeholders to use these results in their risk planning and recommend future work to support prevention, preparedness, response and recovery planning
Can Recurrence Quantification Analysis Be Useful in the Interpretation of Airborne Turbulence Measurements?
In airborne data or model outputs, clouds are often defined using information about Liquid Water Content (LWC). Unfortunately LWC is not enough to retrieve information about the dynamical boundary of the cloud, that is, volume of turbulent air around the cloud. In this work, we propose an algorithmic approach to this problem based on a method used in time series analysis of dynamical systems, namely Recurrence Plot (RP) and Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA). We construct RPs using time series of turbulence kinetic energy, vertical velocity and temperature fluctuations as variables important for cloud dynamics. Then, by studying time series of laminarity (LAM), a variable which is calculated using RPs, we distinguish between turbulent and non-turbulent segments along a horizontal flight leg. By selecting a single threshold of this quantity, we are able to reduce the number of subjective variables and their thresholds used in the definition of the dynamical cloud boundary
Addressing the threat of climate change to agriculture requires improving crop resilience to short-term abiotic stress
Climate change represents a serious threat to global agriculture, necessitating the development of more environmentally resilient crops to safeguard the future of food production. The effects of climate change are appearing to include a higher frequency of extreme weather events and increased day-to-day weather variability. As such, crops which are able to cope with short-term environmental stress, in addition to those that are tolerant to longer term stress conditions are required . It is becoming apparent that the hitherto relatively little studied process of post-stress plant recovery could be key to optimizing growth and production under fluctuating conditions with intermittent transient stress events. Developing more durable crops requires the provision of genetic resources to identify useful traits through the development of screening protocols. Such traits can then become the objective of crop breeding programmes. In this study, we discuss these issues and outline example research in leafy vegetables that is investigating resilience to short-term abiotic stress
Systematics of Heavy Quark Production at HERA
We discuss heavy quark and quarkonium production in various kinematic regions
at the HERA ep collider. In contrast to fixed target experiments, collider
kinematics allows the possibility of detailed measurements of particle
production in the proton fragmentation region. One thus can study parton
correlations in the proton Fock states materialized by the virtual photon
probe. We discuss various configurations of inelastic electron-proton
scattering, including peripheral, diffractive, and deep inelastic processes. In
particular, we show that intrinsic heavy quark Fock states can be identified by
the observation of quarkonium production at large and a low mean

Preferential regulation of stably expressed genes in the human genome suggests a widespread expression buffering role of microRNAs
In this study, we comprehensively explored the stably expressed genes (SE genes) and fluctuant genes (FL genes) in the human genome by a meta-analysis of large scale microarray data. We found that these genes have distinct function distributions. miRNA targets are shown to be significantly enriched in SE genes by using propensity analysis of miRNA regulation, supporting the hypothesis that miRNAs can buffer whole genome expression fluctuation. The expression-buffering effect of miRNA is independent of the target site number within the 3'-untranslated region. In addition, we found that gene expression fluctuation is positively correlated with the number of transcription factor binding sites in the promoter region, which suggests that coordination between transcription factors and miRNAs leads to balanced responses to external perturbations
