Perturbative Quantum (In)equivalence of Dual σ\sigma Models in 22 dimensions

    Get PDF
Various examples of target space duality transformations are investigated up to two loop order in perturbation theory. Our results show that when using the tree level (`naive') transformation rules the dual theories are in general {\it inequivalent} at two loops to the original ones, (both for the Abelian and the non Abelian duality).Comment: 11 pages, Latex, uses espcrc2.st

T-Duality For String in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We continue our study of the Lorentz breaking string theories. These theories are defined as string theory with modified Hamiltonian constraint which breaks the Lorentz symmetry of target space-time. We analyze properties of this theory in the target space-time that possesses isometry along one direction. We also derive the T-duality rules for Lorentz breaking string theories and show that they are the same as that of Buscher's T-duality for the relativistic strings.Comment: 17 pages, references adde

Michelson Interferometry with the Keck I Telescope

    Get PDF
We report the first use of Michelson interferometry on the Keck I telescope for diffraction-limited imaging in the near infrared JHK and L bands. By using an aperture mask located close to the f/25 secondary, the 10 m Keck primary mirror was transformed into a separate-element, multiple aperture interferometer. This has allowed diffraction-limited imaging of a large number of bright astrophysical targets, including the geometrically complex dust envelopes around a number of evolved stars. The successful restoration of these images, with dynamic ranges in excess of 200:1, highlights the significant capabilities of sparse aperture imaging as compared with more conventional filled-pupil speckle imaging for the class of bright targets considered here. In particular the enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio of the Fourier data, precipitated by the reduction in atmospheric noise, allows high fidelity imaging of complex sources with small numbers of short-exposure images relative to speckle. Multi-epoch measurements confirm the reliability of this imaging technique and our whole dataset provides a powerful demonstration of the capabilities of aperture masking methods when utilized with the current generation of large-aperture telescopes. The relationship between these new results and recent advances in interferometry and adaptive optics is briefly discussed.Comment: Accepted into Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Two-Loop Beta Functions Without Feynman Diagrams

    Get PDF
Starting from a consistency requirement between T-duality symmetry and renormalization group flows, the two-loop metric beta function is found for a d=2 bosonic sigma model on a generic, torsionless background. The result is obtained without Feynman diagram calculations, and represents further evidence that duality symmetry severely constrains renormalization flows.Comment: 4 pp., REVTeX. Differential geometry with a projection: Application to double field theory

In recent development of double field theory, as for the description of the massless sector of closed strings, the spacetime dimension is formally doubled, i.e. from D to D+D, and the T-duality is realized manifestly as a global O(D,D) rotation. In this paper, we conceive a differential geometry characterized by a O(D,D) symmetric projection, as the underlying mathematical structure of double field theory. We introduce a differential operator compatible with the projection, which, contracted with the projection, can be covariantized and may replace the ordinary derivatives in the generalized Lie derivative that generates the gauge symmetry of double field theory. We construct various gauge covariant tensors which include a scalar and a tensor carrying two O(D,D) vector indices.Comment: 1+22 pages, No figure; a previous result on 4-index tensor removed, presentation improve

An Equivalence Between Momentum and Charge in String Theory

It is shown that for a translationally invariant solution to string theory, spacetime duality interchanges the momentum in the symmetry direction and the axion charge per unit length. As one application, we show explicitly that charged black strings are equivalent to boosted (uncharged) black strings. The extremal black strings (which correspond to the field outside of a fundamental macroscopic string) are equivalent to plane fronted waves describing strings moving at the speed of light.Comment: 10 page

Open Strings and D-branes in WZNW model

    Get PDF
An abundance of the Poisson-Lie symmetries of the WZNW models is uncovered. They give rise, via the Poisson-Lie TT-duality, to a rich structure of the dual pairs of DD-branes configurations in group manifolds. The DD-branes are characterized by their shapes and certain two-forms living on them. The WZNW path integral for the interacting DD-branes diagrams is unambiguously defined if the two-form on the DD-brane and the WZNW three-form on the group form an integer-valued cocycle in the relative singular cohomology of the group manifold with respect to its DD-brane submanifold. An example of the SU(N)SU(N) WZNW model is studied in some detail.Comment: 28 pages, LaTe

Type 0 T-Duality and the Tachyon Coupling

    Get PDF
We consider the T-duality relations between Type 0A and 0B theories, and show that this constraints the possible couplings of the tachyon to the RR-fields. Due to the `doubling' of the RR sector in Type 0 theories, we are able to introduce a democratic formulation for the Type 0 effective actions, in which there is no Chern-Simons term in the effective action. Finally we discuss how to embed Type II solutions into Type 0 theories.Comment: some misprints corrected and a reference adde

    An N = 2 Supersymmetric Membrane Flow

    Get PDF
We find M-theory solutions that are holographic duals of flows of the maximally supersymmetric N=8 scalar-fermion theory in (2+1) dimensions. In particular, we construct the M-theory solution dual to a flow in which a single chiral multiplet is given a mass, and the theory goes to a new infra-red fixed point. We also examine this new solution using M2-brane probes. The (2+1)-dimensional field theory fixed-point is closely related to that of Leigh and Strassler, while the M-theory solution is closely related to the corresponding IIB flow solution. We recast the IIB flow solution in a more geometric manner and use this to obtain an Ansatz for the M-theory flow. We are able to generalize our solution further to obtain flows with del Pezzo sub-manifolds, and we give an explicit solution with a conifold singularity.Comment: 28 pages; harvma

D-branes in Generalized Geometry and Dirac-Born-Infeld Action

The purpose of this paper is to formulate the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action in a framework of generalized geometry and clarify its symmetry. A D-brane is defined as a Dirac structure where scalar fields and gauge field are treated on an equal footing in a static gauge. We derive generalized Lie derivatives corresponding to the diffeomorphism and B-field gauge transformations and show that the DBI action is invariant under non-linearly realized symmetries for all types of diffeomorphisms and B-field gauge transformations. Consequently, we can interpret not only the scalar field but also the gauge field on the D-brane as the generalized Nambu-Goldstone boson.Comment: 32 pages, 4 figures, ver2:typos corrected, references adde
