    Parametric study of transport aircraft systems cost and weight

    The results of a NASA study to develop production cost estimating relationships (CERs) and weight estimating relationships (WERs) for commercial and military transport aircraft at the system level are presented. The systems considered correspond to the standard weight groups defined in Military Standard 1374 and are listed. These systems make up a complete aircraft exclusive of engines. The CER for each system (or CERs in several cases) utilize weight as the key parameter. Weights may be determined from detailed weight statements, if available, or by using the WERs developed, which are based on technical and performance characteristics generally available during preliminary design. The CERs that were developed provide a very useful tool for making preliminary estimates of the production cost of an aircraft. Likewise, the WERs provide a very useful tool for making preliminary estimates of the weight of aircraft based on conceptual design information

    Can estrogenic radicals, generated by lactoperoxidase, be involved in the molecular mechanism of breast carcinogenesis?

    Mutations of regulatory genes, which perturb the mechanism of cell replication resulting in abnormal cell proliferation, are the main cause of cancer. Many endogenous and exogenous chemicals (including estrogenic hormones) are known to represent a major carcinogenic risk for humans. 2-OH- and 4-OH-derivatives of estrogenic molecules have been shown to form stable adducts with purine DNA bases and act as 'depurinating' agents, thus altering gene transcription (Cavalieri EL, Stack DE, Devanesan PD et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1997; 94: 10937-10942). Lactoperoxidase (LPO), which is produced by mammary glands, is likely to be involved in breast carcinogenesis, because of its ability to interact with estrogenic hormones and oxidise them through two one-electron reaction steps. We investigated the reactivity of LPO towards five molecules: 17-beta-estradiol (a natural hormone), diethylstilbestrol (a synthetic drug, supplied to pregnant women for preventing spontaneous abortion), exestrol (a synthetic antigonadotropic estrogen), 2-OH- and 4-OH-estradiol (catabolic products of estradiol). Enzymatically generated radical derivatives of such molecules were stabilized by spin-trapping or by chelation of a diamagnetic metal ion and characterized with EPR spectroscopy.     Modeling the Effect of Images on Product Choices

    Conjoint is one of the most popular methods in marketing research, widely used to understand how customers trade-off features of a product. Since product images have a strong influence on customer choice, it is natural to want to include images in conjoint studies, yet this has proven to be difficult, since images are difficult to parsimoniously characterize in the utility function. This paper proposes a novel approach to account for the effect of images on respondents’ choices, in which consumer heterogeneity in the appeal of the images is modeled through the covariance structure in a probit model. The covariance structure is informed by a separate task where respondents rate the images included in the study. In our application to midsize crossover vehicles, we show that our approach readily scales to a large number of images, fits better than several alternatives commonly used in practice, and makes more reasonable predictions about product substitution when a new product enters the market. We discuss how this approach could be used predict the effect of other difficult-to-characterize product attribute such as sound quality or taste on product choice

    THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL STUDY OF HYDROGEN DIFFUSION IN Zr-NbALLOYS

    Within the framework of the delayed hydride cracking phenomena reported for the pressure tubes of CANDU-typenuclear reactors, we study the influence of the Zr-β(∼20 %Nb -∼80 %Zr) continuous phase on the hydrogen diffusion coefficient,DH, through the Zr-α/ Zr-βbiphasic alloy. We propose an improved phenomenological model forDHwithrespect to those found in the literature. Furthermore, we study the influence of the Nb content onDHfor the cubic phase Zr-β, employing the transition state theory furnished with ab-initio parameters provided by the SIESTA code. In particular, 9 ordered alloys are considered with different Nb content and effective activation energies are computed by Arrhenius fits for each alloy. We find that activation energies vary in a non-monotonic way as Nb content increases, reaching a maximum value at about Zr-50 %Nb. Finally, we observe that the predicted and measured larger diffusivity along the tube axis vs. the radial direction, is consistent with the material texture. Moreover, we conclude that the loss of continuity of the Zr-βsheets present in the tube microstructure, is consistent with the decrease ofDHin time at a given temperature

    The gut microbiota of farmed and wild brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis): evaluation of feed-related differences using 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding

    The gut microbiota has become a topic of increasing importance in various fields, including aquaculture. Several fish species have been the subject of investigations concerning the intestinal microbiota, comparing different variables including the intestine portions, the environment and diet. In this study, the microbiota of farmed and wild brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) was analysed, considering separately wall and content of the medial portion of the intestine. A total of 66 fish (age class 2+) were sampled, of which 46 wild and 20 farmed brook trout, along two different years. Microbiota data were obtained using a 16S metabarcoding approach by analysing the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA. Data showed that the core microbiota of these species is represented by Proteobacteria (Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria), Actinobacteria, Firmicutes (Bacilli and Clostridia) and, only for farmed animals, Fusobacteria. The latter taxon is likely related to the fishmeal-based diet administered to farmed brook trout. Indeed, alpha and beta diversity analysis showed differences between wild and farmed fish. Finally, statistically significant differences in the microbiota composition were observed between intestinal wall and content in wild fish, while no differences were detected in reared animals

    Factors affecting outcome in frameless non-isocentric stereotactic radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia: A multicentric cohort study

    Background: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an effective treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Nevertheless, a proportion of patients will experience recurrence and treatment-related sensory disturbances. In order to evaluate the predictors of efficacy and safety of image-guided non-isocentric radiosurgery, we analyzed the impact of trigeminal nerve volume and the nerve dose/volume relationship, together with relevant clinical characteristics. Methods: Two-hundred and ninety-six procedures were performed on 262 patients at three centers. In 17 patients the TN was secondary to multiple sclerosis (MS). Trigeminal pain and sensory disturbances were classified according to the Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) scale. Pain-free-intervals were investigated using Kaplan Meier analyses. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to identify predictors. Results: The median follow-up period was 38 months, median maximal dose 72.4 Gy, median target nerve volume 25 mm3, and median prescription dose 60 Gy. Pain control rate (BNI I-III) at 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months were 96.8, 90.9, 84.2, 81.4, 74.2, and 71.2%, respectively. Overall, 18% of patients developed sensory disturbances. Patients with volume 65 30 mm3 were more likely to maintain pain relief (p = 0.031), and low integral dose (< 1.4 mJ) tended to be associated with more pain recurrence than intermediate (1.4-2.7 mJ) or high integral dose (> 2.7 mJ; low vs. intermediate: log-rank test, \u3c72 = 5.02, p = 0.019; low vs. high: log-rank test, \u3c72 = 6.026, p = 0.014). MS, integral dose, and mean dose were the factors associated with pain recurrence, while re-irradiation and MS were predictors for sensory disturbance in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions: The dose to nerve volume ratio is predictive of pain recurrence in TN, and re-irradiation has a major impact on the development of sensory disturbances after non-isocentric SRS. Interestingly, the integral dose may differ significantly in treatments using apparently similar dose and volume constraints
