Vernacular earthen architecture. Construction techniques and restoration. From the international setting to some specific Italian regional cases

[EN] The research focuses on vernacular architecture, in particular earth buildings, highlighting the different geographic areas involved, building types and construction techniques. In Italy, despite theoretical progress, some cultural and technical problems are still evident in earth architecture conservation. This is also due to the prevalence, among earth buildings, of vernacular architecture, that, in general, has no artistic value and with historical value yet to be fully appreciated. The characteristics of some regional areas are also considered, with particular attention to the Marche and Sardinia Regions, where earthen constructions have existed since ancient times. Knowledge of construction techniques that are the result of age-old experience is the basis for a good conservation and for the design of new ones. Today, some public administrations, on the regional and local levels, have developed operating manuals for the conservation of earth constructions, but there is still no real legislative protection for earth buildings and their material authenticity.Petrucci, E.; Mancini, R.; Putzu, MG. Penggabungan Fitur Tekstur Yang Invariant Terhadap Iluminasi Dan Fitur Bentuk Untuk Deteksi Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

. Detection with microscopic blood image can help early detection of Accute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Therefore, image acquisition process under lighting variation cause varying illumination image, so it’s needed to find texture feature extraction method that is invariant towards illumination. Shape feature also needed in this study because can represent characteristics of microscopic blood image.This study proposes combination of texture feature that is illumination invariant and shape feature for ALL detection. Texture feature will be extracted using Complete Robust Local Binary Pattern (CRLBP) method and will be tested on microscopic blood image dataset named ALL_IDB1. Testing will be conducted by using various combination of different texture feature and shape feature. Combination of shape feature and CRLBP is perform better than others. In indvidual cell test, highest result using SVM Linear with accuracy 90.89%, sensitivity 94.24% and specificity 64.82%. Classification using ALL image reach accuracy 88.00 %, sensitivity 82.35% and specificity 100%

Soft Inflatable Fingers: An Overview of Design, Prototyping and Sensorisation for Various Applications

Fabric-based soft actuators, grippers and manipulators are gaining in popularity due to their ability to handle large payloads while being lightweight, extremely compliant, low-cost and fully collapsible. Achieving full-pose sensing of fabric fingers without compromising on these advantageous properties, however, remains a challenge. This paper overviews work on soft fabric-based inflatable finger design, actuation and sensorisation carried out at the Centre for Advanced Robotics at Queen Mary (ARQ), University of London. Further experimental analysis has been performed to examine features such as bending control and eversion (growing from the tip) in fabric fingers for grasping applications. In addition, two types of grasp force have been measured for a bi-fingered gripper: envelope grasping and pinch grasping. Beyond force measurement, this paper advances a new concept for the sensorisation of fabric grippers using soft optical waveguide sensors and proposes shape estimation using image processing

Highly Manoeuvrable Eversion Robot Based on Fusion of Function with Structure

Despite their soft and compliant bodies, most of today’s soft robots have limitations when it comes to elongation or extension of their main structure. In contrast to this, a new type of soft robot called the eversion robot can grow longitudinally, exploiting the principle of eversion. Eversion robots can squeeze through narrow openings, giving the possibility to access places that are inaccessible by conventional robots. The main drawback of these types of robots is their limited bending capability due to the tendency to move along a straight line. In this paper, we propose a novel way to fuse bending actuation with the robot’s structure. We devise an eversion robot whose body forms both the central chamber that acts as the backbone as well as the actuators that cause bending and manoeuvre the manipulator. The proposed technique shows a significantly improved bending capability compared to externally attaching actuators to an eversion robot showing a 133% improvement in bending angle. Due to the increased manoeuvrability, the proposed solution is a step towards the employment of eversion robots in remote and difficult-to-access environments
