Coherent caloritronics in Josephson-based nanocircuits
We describe here the first experimental realization of a heat interferometer,
thermal counterpart of the well-known superconducting quantum interference
device (SQUID). These findings demonstrate, on the first place, the existence
of phase-dependent heat transport in Josephson-based superconducting circuits
and, on the second place, open the way to novel ways of mastering heat at the
nanoscale. Combining the use of external magnetic fields for phase biasing and
different Josephson junction architectures we show here that a number of heat
interference patterns can be obtained. The experimental realization of these
architectures, besides being relevant from a fundamental physics point of view,
might find important technological application as building blocks of
phase-coherent quantum thermal circuits. In particular, the performance of two

Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production: Product Quality and Consumer Acceptance
Samples of suckling lambs (n=40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed to asses physico-chemical characteristics, including instrumental texture, and nutritional quality in terms of fatty acid composition. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results revealed that organic suckling lamb meat is healthier as shown by the lower saturated fatty acid levels, the higher polyunsaturated fatty acid contents and the higher 6/3 ratiko. The organic meat had lower instrumental hardness, received higher scores in all sensory parameters, and had statistically better fat sensation and higher ratings for overall liking. These results lend support to the notion among consumers that organic products are healthier and tastier
Consumer Appreciation of Carcass Quality of Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production
Carcass characteristics of sucking lambs (n= 40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed including objective and subjective parameters for fatness and conformation, meat and fat colour. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results showed that the characteristics of the carcass of suckling lamb were similar for both types of production systems pointing out that organic production system did not affect fatness or muscle development. However, organic meat was darker (higher L* and a* values) probably related with the higher amount of exercise, although fat was not more yellow. In contrast consumers did not consider organic meat darker and there were not significant differences in appearance related with the similar conformation. These results reflect that consumer perceive organic meat as at least as good as conventional production not only regarding environmental quality but also regarding carcass quality
Nongalvanic thermometry for ultracold two-dimensional electron domains
Measuring the temperature of a two-dimensional electron gas at temperatures
of a few mK is a challenging issue, which standard thermometry schemes may fail
to tackle. We propose and analyze a nongalvanic thermometer, based on a quantum
point contact and quantum dot, which delivers virtually no power to the

Epifisiolisis de cabeza de radio asociadas a luxación de codo y reducción espontánea
Realizamos un estudio retrospectivo de 10 casos de la epifisiolisis de cabeza de radio ocurridas durante el periodo 1992 a 1997, con un desplazamiento mayor de 60Âş que segĂşn los criterios de O'Brien corresponderĂan a un grado III. De todas las revisadas seleccionamos 6 casos en los que habĂa una angulaciĂłn mayor de 90Âş, creemos ocurren despuĂ©s de luxaciĂłn o reducciĂłn espontánea de luxaciĂłn de codo; por ser las más frecuentes, las que más problemas presentan en el tratamiento y las que producen más secuelas. Nuestro objetivo es valorar los resultados obtenidos con nuestros tratamientos y realizar una revisiĂłn bibliográfica.We have done a retrospective study of ten cases of radial head epiphysiolysis occurred between 1992 and 1997, displaced more than 60Âş. (O'Brien's grade III). Amongst them we have selected those which were displaced more than 90Âş (six cases) probably occurred after an elbow luxation or after the spontaneous reduction of an elbow luxation; because the are more infrequent, more troublesome and they give more secuelae. UV Dichroism in Vertically Aligned Nematic Displays
Vertically aligned negative nematics are employed in high-end projection applications, where extremely high light fluxes are employed. Under these conditions, the UV photochemical stability of the material becomes an issue that must be included in the characterization process of such devices. Photochemical aging tests for vertically aligned microdisplay, however, must take into account the linear dichroism shown by the liquid crystal material upon switching. In this work a method to evaluate UV linear dichroism is described. Salmonella in free-ranging quokkas (Setonix brachyurus) from Rottnest Island and the mainland of Western Australia
Salmonella is a genus of Gram-negative, motile, and facultative anaerobic bacteria with a worldwide distribution that contaminates multiple substrates (vegetation, food, soil, and water) and inhabits the gastrointestinal tract of birds, reptiles, and mammals, including humans. Rottnest Island is a popular tourist destination and is abundantly inhabited by quokkas (Setonix brachyurus), a charismatic small wallaby. Current data on the association between Salmonella and quokkas on Rottnest Island are outdated by approximately 30 years. Additionally, previous studies on quokkas on this island and mainland Western Australia did not perform physical examinations or any diagnostic tests. The aim of the project was to assess the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in quokkas from Rottnest Island and mainland Western Australia and correlate the presence of the bacterium with the health of the animal. Ninety-two quokkas from Rottnest Island (n = 71) and populations on the mainland (n = 21) were screened for Salmonella, and a prevalence of 47.9% and 4.8%, respectively, was determined. A total of 16 serovars were identified from 37 isolates; five of these serovars had previously not been described in the quokka. Salmonella appeared to have an effect on the haematology and blood chemistry of quokkas on Rottnest Island consistent with subclinical salmonellosis. The health of Rottnest Island quokkas, and their potential impact on the health of the visitors to the island, should continue to be monitored carefully
Performance Of The High Speed Rail In Spain In The Context Of The New Regulation Framework. Evidence From The Madrid-Seville Hsr Corridor
The ambitious planned development of the high-speed rail (HSR) network in Spain requires the implementation of new sector regulations to fully achieve its objectives, namely to make the sector more competitive and to promote a more balanced and efficient transport system. For this purpose, the Spanish administration recently launched the new Rail Sector Act (39/2003), on a national regulatory framework. The planned liberalisation process foresees the end of the monopoly of the Spanish state operator RENFE, opening up passenger transport to new rail operators by 2010. On a European level, this new regulatory framework comes in line with EU’s concerns both on transport service performance and on infrastructure development. On the one hand, European regulations have focused in measures to guarantee quality of service, equal access and effective competition market rules. On the other, the relevance of the development of HSR projects in the Iberian peninsula is proved with their inclusion among the priority projects of the trans-European networks (TEN).Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies.
