Polar optical phonons in core-shell semiconductor nanowires
We obtain the the long-wavelength polar optical vibrational modes of
semiconductor core-shell nanowires by means of a phenomenological continuum
model. A basis for the space of solutions is derived, and by applying the
appropriate boundary conditions, the transcendental equations for the coupled
and uncoupled modes are attained. Our results are applied to the study of the
GaAs-GaP core-shell nanowire, for which we calculate numerically the polar
optical modes, analyzing the role of strain in the vibrational properties of
this nanosystem
Demand Pattern Calibration in Water Distribution Networks
AbstractWater distribution network models are widely used by water companies. Consumer demands are one of the main uncertainties in these models, but their calibration is not feasible due to the low number of sensors available in most real networks. However, the behaviour of these individual demands can be also calibrated if some a priori information is available. A methodology for calibrating demand patterns based on singular value decomposition (SVD) is presented. Demand stochastic nature is overcome by using multiple data samples. The methodology is applied to two water distribution systems: an academic network and a real network with synthetic data
When is Containment Decidable for Probabilistic Automata?
The containment problem for quantitative automata is the natural quantitative generalisation of the classical language inclusion problem for Boolean automata. We study it for probabilistic automata, where it is known to be undecidable in general. We restrict our study to the class of probabilistic automata with bounded ambiguity. There, we show decidability (subject to Schanuel's conjecture) when one of the automata is assumed to be unambiguous while the other one is allowed to be finitely ambiguous. Furthermore, we show that this is close to the most general decidable fragment of this problem by proving that it is already undecidable if one of the automata is allowed to be linearly ambiguous
Local Anomalies, Local Equivariant Cohomology and the Variational Bicomplex
The locality conditions for the vanishing of local anomalies in field theory
are shown to admit a geometrical interpretation in terms of local equivariant
cohomology, thus providing a method to deal with the problem of locality in the
geometrical approaches to the study of local anomalies based on the
Atiyah-Singer index theorem. The local cohomology is shown to be related to the
cohomology of jet bundles by means of the variational bicomplex theory. Using
these results and the techniques for the computation of the cohomology of
invariant variational bicomplexes in terms of relative Gel'fand-Fuks cohomology
introduced in [6], we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the
cancellation of local gravitational and mixed anomalies.Comment: 36 pages. The paper is divided in two part
The nature of the ISM in galaxies during the star-formation activity peak of the Universe
We combine a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, tracking atomic and
molecular phases of cold gas, with a three-dimensional radiative-transfer and
line tracing code to study the sub-mm emission from atomic and molecular
species (CO, HCN, [CI], [CII], [OI]) in galaxies. We compare the physics that
drives the formation of stars at the epoch of peak star formation (SF) in the
Universe (z = 2.0) with that in local galaxies. We find that normal
star-forming galaxies at high redshift have much higher CO-excitation peaks
than their local counterparts and that CO cooling takes place at higher
excitation levels. CO line ratios increase with redshift as a function of
galaxy star-formation rate, but are well correlated with H2 surface density
independent of redshift. We find an increase in the [OI]/[CII] line ratio in
typical star-forming galaxies at z = 1.2 and z = 2.0 with respect to
counterparts at z = 0. Our model results suggest that typical star-forming
galaxies at high redshift consist of much denser and warmer star-forming clouds
than their local counterparts. Galaxies belonging to the tail of the SF
activity peak at z = 1.2 are already less dense and cooler than counterparts
during the actual peak of SF activity (z = 2.0). We use our results to discuss
how future ALMA surveys can best confront our predictions and constrain models
of galaxy formation.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Nonlinear Interaction of Transversal Modes in a CO2 Laser
We show the possibility of achieving experimentally a Takens-Bogdanov
bifurcation for the nonlinear interaction of two transverse modes ()
in a laser. The system has a basic O(2) symmetry which is perturbed by
some symmetry-breaking effects that still preserve the symmetry. The
pattern dynamics near this codimension two bifurcation under such symmetries is
described. This dynamics changes drastically when the laser properties are
modified.Comment: 16 pages, 0 figure
