    Rotational joint assembly for the prosthetic leg

    A rotational joint assembly for a prosthetic leg has been devised, which enables an artificial foot to rotate slightly when a person is walking, running or turning. The prosthetic leg includes upper and lower tubular members with the rotational joint assembly interposed between them. The assembly includes a restrainer mechanism which consists of a pivotably mounted paddle element. This device applies limiting force to control the rotation of the foot and also restores torque to return the foot back to its initial position

    Parametric analysis of closed cycle magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power plants

    A parametric analysis of closed cycle MHD power plants was performed which studied the technical feasibility, associated capital cost, and cost of electricity for the direct combustion of coal or coal derived fuel. Three reference plants, differing primarily in the method of coal conversion utilized, were defined. Reference Plant 1 used direct coal fired combustion while Reference Plants 2 and 3 employed on site integrated gasifiers. Reference Plant 2 used a pressurized gasifier while Reference Plant 3 used a ""state of the art' atmospheric gasifier. Thirty plant configurations were considered by using parametric variations from the Reference Plants. Parametric variations include the type of coal (Montana Rosebud or Illinois No. 6), clean up systems (hot or cold gas clean up), on or two stage atmospheric or pressurized direct fired coal combustors, and six different gasifier systems. Plant sizes ranged from 100 to 1000 MWe. Overall plant performance was calculated using two methodologies. In one task, the channel performance was assumed and the MHD topping cycle efficiencies were based on the assumed values. A second task involved rigorous calculations of channel performance (enthalpy extraction, isentropic efficiency and generator output) that verified the original (task one) assumptions. He lived in Savannah from 1868 until his death in 1915 and established a very successful jewelry business which is still in operation today.     The Resident Assistant as Paraprofessional Counselor and Crisis Interventionist: A Study of Lived Experience

    Counseling and helping services on college campuses have changed greatly in recent decades, yet the services provided by college counseling centers are hardly keeping pace. Campuses have turned to other means of addressing the increased need for helping services, including training paraprofessionals to address many counseling and crisis situations that occur on college campuses. One of the most ubiquitous groups of paraprofessional helpers are resident assistants, undergraduate students trained to work with students living on campus who present with counseling or crisis intervention needs. The concerns students bring to resident assistants are often beyond the scope of their training and experience; yet, these undergraduates are still expected to serve as the first responders on most college campuses. The literature is devoid of current, qualitative studies that examine what Figley (1995) described as the cost of caring (p. 10). The purpose of this study was to examine, qualitatively, the lived experience of resident assistants during their service as paraprofessional counselors and crisis interventionists. Using purposeful and extreme case sampling, nine resident assistants served as key informants for this study. Data were collected through the use of individual, semistructured interviews. The researcher conducted the introductory data analysis while the interviews were being conducted. These data were reduced, displayed, and conclusions were drawn. As subsequent interviews were conducted, the researcher continued to analyze the data until all interviews were completed. Following the data collection, the data were again analyzed through the processes of reduction and display. Through this iterative and recursive process, themes emerged and conclusions were drawn. The individual and cross-case analyses yielded eight primary themes and four secondary themes. These themes related to the risk and protective factors inherent in the position, as described by Bronfenbrenner (1979, 2005). The emergent themes also spoke to training, supervision, boundaries, and the long-term effects of being a resident assistant, specific to the peer counseling and crisis intervention roles. The researcher examined and discussed the interrelationships between the various themes. Finally, the analysis yielded potential hypotheses, and implications were discussed for both future research and practice

    A study of keratinocyte differentiation and adhesion in vitro

    In this study, I used the serum-free MCDB 153 culture system to investigate calcium-induced keratinocyte differentiation. Treating normal human keratinocytes with high extracellular calcium concentrations (1mM) increased the proportion of cells expressing differentiation-specific proteins. I showed that this was not caused by calcium-induced cell-cycle arrest, nor was it a consequence of stratification. However, the expression of differentiation-specific proteins was preceded by the formation of cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesions. The likely importance of the cadherin-mediated adhesions in initiation the differentiation program was confirmed in two ways. Firstly, clustering cell-surface E-cadherin in low extracellular calcium using monoclonal antibodies increased the proportion of keratinocytes expressing differentiation-specific proteins. Secondly, suppressing the formation of cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesions using synthetic peptide analogous to the cadherin recognition domain attenuated the calcium-induced expression of differentiation-specific proteins. These data are consistent with a role for the cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesions in initiating the keratinocyte differentiation program in response to calcium in vitro. A second aspect of this project involved an investigation of the role played by the Src-family of protein tyrosine kinases at calcium-induced cadherin-mediated adherens junctions. The ubiquitously expressed members of this family, c-Src, Fyn and c-Yes were localised to the cadherin-mediated adhesions formed in response to high extracellular calcium. Treating adherent keratinocytes maintained in low extracellular calcium with a specific Src kinase inhibitor, PD162531, induced the assembly of cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesions leading to the formation of contiguous groups of cells similar to those seen in response to high extracellular calcium. The data presented are consistent with a role for the Src kinases in regulating adherens junction turnover but do not exclude a role also in modulating aspects of differentiation
