The urban reconquest of the space of proximity: open interior courtyards at Barcelona’s Eixample

En este artículo se exponen algunas conclusiones del estudio de la funcionalidad de los patios interiores públicos del Eixample de Barcelona, nueva tipología de espacio libre. Se llevó a cabo la observación directa del uso de ciertos patios concretos que sirvieron como modelo para comparar la variedad de comportamientos según los distintos tipos seleccionados, funcionalidad del espacio, intensidad de uso, actividades desarrolladas, relación entre sí y con otros elementos urbanos y tipo de usuarios. La información se complementó con encuestas de opinión sobre hábitos de uso y preferencias. Los resultados aportan información útil a la hora de crear nuevos espacios y mantener, con actividad, los que ya existen. Confirman la funcionalidad de los patios y su gran utilidad dentro de la trama urbana. El esfuerzo llevado a cabo por el ayuntamiento tanto económico como en gestión merece la pena y debe seguir haciéndose: los beneficios son mayores a las cargas.This paper applies an approach to the use and adaptability of the courtyards or interior open spaces (IOS) of Barcelona’s Eixample city blocks. A number of city block IOS were selected as models to asses, via direct observation, their functionality within the general system of open spaces. The objective was to evaluate the functionality of the spaces, intensity of use, developed activities, relationship with other IOS and external urban elements, as well as users’ profiles and behaviours. Direct observation was completed with qualitative surveys to find out attitudes, purposes and preferences of regular users. The results provide useful information for the design of new IOS and the maintenance of current ones. Aquest article es proposa donar a conèixer el discurs i les representacions de gènere construïdes pels intel·lectuals i les cultures polítiques antiliberals de l’Espanya del període d’entreguerres. Les noves imatges, inserides en un context de profundes transformacions polítiques, socials i culturals, buscaven temperar el desassossec que els produïen aquells moviments i pràctiques socials que eren percebuts com amenaces a la superioritat viril, a la vigència dels valors suposadament masculins, i a la supremacia i honorabilitat masculina. Tant intel·lectuals com polítics van elaborar un discurs de gènere i unes identitats de masculinitat i feminitat que se sustentaven en les idees reaccionàries i tradicionalistes del segle XIX així com en les noves corrents de pensament de l’època

Obtaining public spaces within the consolidated structure of Barcelona’s Eixample: A protracted process of more than 30 years

Este artículo forma parte de la tesina de máster de investigación en urbanismo sobre los patios interiores de manzana de uso público del Eixample de Barcelona, una nueva tipología de espacio público que surge de la transformación de su trama más representativa. Este artículo se centra en el proceso llevado a cabo por el ayuntamiento para su obtención, un hecho fundamental y no del todo valorado; se pretende poner en valor este proceso, su continuidad y las distintas etapas recorridas. El ayuntamiento ha conseguido hacer de la necesidad virtud: mediante el análisis, el diagnóstico y la intervención ha sido capaz de enfrentarse a los problemas de la ciudad compacta con soluciones innovadoras, sobre la base de un elemento concreto y potente como es la trama de Cerdà. El éxito de la estrategia es notable y la continuación del proceso resulta necesaria.This article is published as part of a Master Thesis in Urbanism focusing on the interior open spaces (IOS) of Barcelona’s Eixample city blocks. This new type of public space evolves from the transformation of its most representative structure. The article focuses on the urban process led by Barcelona’s City Council to gain open spaces within a fully built area; an essential fact, although not fully appreciated. The objective of this paper is to put on the spotlight this urban process, its continuity in time and space, and its different stages. The article analyses the efforts of Barcelona’s City Council to make a virtue of necessity through accurate analysis, diagnose and intervention, thus managing to find innovative solutions to solve the problems of a compact city. The success of this urban project reflects the need to continue and reinforce the process in order to fully achieve the goals aimed.Peer Reviewe

Las miserias del fascismo rural. Las relaciones laborales en la agricultura española, 1936-1948

This article tries to explain the labour agrarian legislation designed by the "rebels" in the Civil War and by the Francoist regime in the first years of the dictatorship. The analysis of the legal dispositions approved between 1936 and 1948 will reveal at what extent the labour Francoist politics was indispensable for the implantation of the principle of "mastery of the big property", like other components of the agrarian policy of the early Francoism in the rural world. Also, the dictatorship assured the prom of the big owners with the politically repeated resource consisting in the wage containment and, especially, in the approval of a profuse regulatory legislation of the labour agricultural relationships. This way, the day labourers were remaining absolutely neglected, and condemned to the over-exploitation of the employers

Democratizando la democracia. Estrategias de género de las trabajadoras agrícolas españolas (1977-1990).

El presente artículo quiere llamar la atención sobre el escaso interés que la investigación histórica muestra, aún hoy en día, por las españolas del campo. Asimismo, pretende contravenir seriamente las imágenes estereotipadas y trasnochadas heredadas por la literatura histórica y que rigen todavía los paradigmas explicativos del análisis histórico. Frente a las imágenes de pasividad, de atraso, de ignorancia, de feminidad centrada en el hogar y en el cuidado de la familia, nuestro propósito es mostrar a las mujeres del mundo rural como un «colectivo estratégico» y como potenciales «agentes del cambio» social y político. Para dar cumplimiento a estos objetivos, el artículo quiere mostrar la importancia de estas mujeres en la implantación y desarrollo de la democracia en España. En este sentido, expondremos las estrategias desplegadas por aquellas mujeres para armonizar la asimetría de las relaciones de género con las que nació nuestra actual democracia. Como se explica en el artículo, sus denuncias y movilizaciones permitieron abrir una perspectiva de género en un mundo y en una actividad sumamente masculinizados como eran el agro y la agricultura, al tiempo que favorecieron la aprobación de políticas públicas tendentes a la consecución de una sociedad más igualitaria.This article draws attention to the feeble historical interest exhibited in traditional historiography towards the study of Spain’s rural women. It also aims to break the completely stereotypical and antiquated images that still govern the explanatory paradigms of historical analysis, inherited from historical literature. In contrast with images of passivity, backwardness or ignorance, our purpose is to show rural women as a «strategic collective» and as potential «agents of change», endowed with indisputable relevance in the social and political realms of the agrarian economy. To fulfil these objectives, this article presents the importance of rural women in the implementation and development of democracy in Spain. We discuss the strategies deployed by rural women in order to harmonise the asymmetry of gender relations that carried over into the current democratic system. The frequent demands and mobilisations of peasant women opened a gender perspective in the concrete and highly masculinised activities of agriculture, favouring the adoption of public policies aimed at achieving a more egalitarian rural society

Written Heritage in the Mediterranean: Research Developments in Spain

Studies of written heritage have been encouraged during the last years in Europe. They have recently introduced new fields of study within its methodology such as palaeography and codicology, mainly in cataloguing documents. Many libraries have been updated through new catalogues and editions of its manuscripts collections in different ancient languages. Other collections have been restored or inventoried by specialists. The research group devoted to the study of original texts in languages developed in the Mediterranean basin since antiquity is trying to contribute to this field. Some cases in the Masorah of Spanish Manuscripts

The present article analyzes some masoretic notes of the Pentateuch of different Spanish Manuscripts, some of them having been used as basis for the Cisneros' Complutensian Polyglot. In order to demonstrate the proximity of the Spanish codices with the Ben Asher tradition, I compare the notes of masorah with those of the manuscripts Leningrad, Or 4445 and Aleppo, and with the BHS and Ben Hayyîm editions as well.En el presente artículo se analizan algunas notas masoréticas del Pentateuco en diferentes manuscritos españoles. Algunos de ellos deben su importancia a que fueron utilizados para establecer el texto base de la Biblia Políglota Complutense de Cisneros. Más adelante, se compara la información de estas notas masoréticas con los manuscritos de Leningrado, Or 4445, Cairo y Alepo y con las ediciones de Ben Hayyîm y Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) con el fin de demostrar la proximidad de los códices españoles con la tradición tiberiense de Ben Ašer

Some Masoretic Notes of Mss. L and Or 4445 Compared with the Spanish Tradition

The paper analyzes some masoretic notes of the manuscript 118-Z-42 (M1) of the University of Madrid library in the book of Exodus. The notes of masorah have been compared with those of the manuscripts Or 4445 and L, and with the BHS and Ben Hayyim editions as well, in order to demostrate the proximity of the Spanish codices with the Ben Asher tradition and the high quality of Spanish manuscripts.Estudio de varias notas masoréticas del libro de Éxodo en el manuscrito M1 (118-Z-42) de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
