By integrating different omics levels (transcriptome, proteome and phenome), we were able to study Escherichia coli polyphosphate mutant strains (Δppk1, Δppx, and Δppk1-ppx).     Neuronal Density in Primary Visual Cortex (17 Visual Area), in Two Species of Octodon

    Indexación: ScieloEstudios experimentales demuestran que modificaciones medioambientales pueden producir alteraciones en el desarrollo normal de la corteza cerebral visual y sus conexiones. Por otra parte, es posible que en condiciones naturales, las especies animales hayan desarrollado adaptaciones genéticas a las distintas condiciones de luminosidad en que realizan su actividad. Recientemente, se han observado variaciones significativas en la densidad neuronal cortical del área 17 (área visual primaria), en roedores silvestres con diferentes períodos diarios de actividad y relación filogenética distante (Abrothrix olivaceus y Phyllotis darwini), pero aún no se ha determinado la naturaleza genética o plástica de dichas diferencias. En este trabajo se compararon especies con una mayor cercanía filogenética, para disminuir al máximo la variable taxonómica. Se estudió la corteza visual primaria (área 17), de roedores silvestres nativos, de las especies Octodon degus (n=5) y Octodon bridgesi (n=3), pertenecientes a la Familia Octodontidae, con el propósito de evidenciar cambios a través de la medición de la densidad neuronal, mediante la técnica del disector óptico, en cortes de 40 µm, incluidos en celoidina y teñidos con Nissl. Complementariamente, se realizó una cuantificación de la densidad neuronal de la corteza motora de las especies en estudio. O. degus, que presenta un período de actividad diurna, evidenció una densidad neuronal menor en la corteza visual (34,32 ± 2,51 x 104 neuronas/mm3), que la observada en O. bridgesi (39,55 ± 0,64 x 104 neuronas/mm3), especie de período de actividad nocturna; lo cual fue estadísticamente significativo (t=3,44; p<0,05). Las diferencias encontradas se podrían relacionar con el tipo de condiciones de luminosidad en que se desenvuelven dichas especies, aunque no se puede descartar la influencia de otros factores. SUMMARY: Studies show that environmental modifications can produce profound alterations in the normal development of the visual cortex and its connectivity. For the other hand it is possible that in natural conditions, animal species have developed genetic adaptations to the different conditions of luminance in which they normally behave. Recently have observed significant changes in cortical neuronal density of area 17 (primary visual area), in two sympatric Chilean rodents with different daily activity (Phyllotis darwini and Abrothrix olivaceus), but have not yet determined the genetic nature or plastic such differences. In this paper we compared species with a closer phylogenetic relation so as to minimize the taxonomic variable. We studied the primary visual cortex (area 17) of wild rodents native of the species Octodon degus (n=5) and Octodon bridgesi (n=3), belonging to the Octodontidae family, in order to show changes in the neuronal density, using celloidin-embedded, 40µm-thickness Nissl sections, with the aid of an optical dissector. In addition, we performed a quantification of the neuronal density of the motor cortex of the species under study. O. degus, bearing a crepuscular-diurnal activity pattern, showed a lower neuronal density in the visual cortex (34.32 ± 2.51 x104 neuron/mm3) than that observed in O. bridgesi (39.55 ± 0.64 x104 neuron/mm3), a species that exhibits a nocturnal phase preference, which was statistically significant (t=3.44; p<0.05). These differences might be related to differences in daily activity in two species, but we cannot discount the influence of other factors

    Background studies and shielding effects for the TPC detector of the CAST experiment

    Sunset solar axions traversing the intense magnetic field of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment may be detected in a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector, as X-rays signals. These signals could be masked, however, by the inhomogeneous background of materials in the experimental site. A detailed analysis, based on the detector characteristics, the background radiation at the CAST site, simulations and experimental results, has allowed us to design a shielding which reduces the background level by a factor of ~4 compared to the detector without shielding, depending on its position, in the energy range between 1 and 10 keV.     Habitat fragmentation and genetic variability of tetrapod populations

    In the last two centuries, the development of human civilization has transformed large natural areas into anthropogenic landscapes, making habitat fragmentation a pervasive feature of modern landscapes. In animal populations, habitat fragmentation may alter their genetic diversity and structure due to limited gene flow and dispersion and reduced effective population sizes, potentially leading to genetic drift in small habitat patches. We tested the hypothesis that habitat fragmentation affects genetic diversity of tetrapod populations through a meta-analysis. We also examined certain life history traits of species and particular external landscape factors that may determine the magnitude of genetic erosion observed in fragmented habitats. Our results showed that habitat fragmentation reduces overall genetic diversity of tetrapod populations. Stronger negative fragmentation effects were detected for amphibians, birds, and mammals. Within each taxonomic group, species with large body size were more strongly affected by fragmentation. Particularly within mammals, we found that less vagile species with short generation times represent the most susceptible tetrapod group to lose genetic diversity in fragmented habitats. As external drivers, we found a non-significant trend of lower fragmentation effects in study systems of less than 50 years and stronger effects in older (>100 years) fragmented systems. As expected, the extent of habitat loss was also important in determining the magnitude of genetic erosion in tetrapods. Extreme habitat loss showed stronger negative effects on genetic diversity irrespectively of taxonomic groups.     Opinion of handball players, trainers and referees using the handball/futsal goalpost anti-tip system “tutigool” for a safe game: 2019 four nations international handball junior tournament

    [EN] Problem Statement:Athletes and especially children die around the world due to sports accidents. In this regard, changes in the federal sports regulations are not only aimed at favoring the game, but also to improve the safety of athletes. In handball, the goal is an essential piece of equipment and the anti-tip system used is fundamental to prevent accidents. Purpose:The objective of the present study was to know the opinion of different sports agents about the use of the Tutigool anti-tip system in the goals. Methods:The sample consisted of 60 subjects (players (51 ± 0.72), trainers (5 ± 14.01), and referees (4 ± 2.5)), of which, 96.7% were men and 3.3% women. A modified Likert-scale questionnaire was filled out (1 = strongly disagree to 7 = strongly agree) by the participants of the Four Nations International Tournament in January 2019 in the male U21 category, held in Santander (Spain). The questionnaire consisted of 18 items. Results: The most relevant results affirm that the system is appropriate for the handball game at the municipal and school level at 5.35 and for high level sports at 4.10. The average satisfaction with this system is 4.34. By agents, the coaches obtained 5.4, the referees 4.5 and the players 4.22. The Kruskal-Wallis test was carried out, which showed no significant differences in the mean scores (p> 0.05) given by players, trainers and referees in different aspects related to the anti-tip system. Conclusions:These results allow making a deep reflection and a change in handball regulations with the aim of adapting them and guaranteeing a safer practice, not only for athletes and amateur users, but also for sports facilities technicians who are responsible for the maintenance and handling of sports equipment.S

    Efficiency diagnostic and advantages of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in the early diagnosis of sepsis

    The goal of our study is to assess the diagnostic profi tability of procalcitonin (PCT) in septic shock and another biomarker as C-reactive protein (CRP). Results: Fifty-four septic patients were assessed, 66% were males; mean age, 63 years. Eighty-eight percent was diagnosed as septic shock and 11% severe sepsis. Seventy-six percent were medical patients. Positive blood cultures in 42.5%. Sepsis origin: respiratory 46%, neurological 5%, digestive 37% and urinary 3%. Average SOFA score was 10.4. Conclusions: PCT and CRP have the same efficiency in early sepsis diagnosis. The PCT and CRP effi ciency diagnostic together is signifi cant but small. We suggest using both with the doubt of sepsis.Ye

    Waves Trapped by Submerged Obstacles at High Frequencies

    As is well known, submerged horizontal cylinders can serve as waveguides for surface water waves. For large values of the wavenumber k in the direction of the cylinders, there is only one trapped wave. We construct asymptotics of these trapped modes and their frequencies as k→∞ in the case of one or two submerged cylinders by means of reducing the initial problem to a system of integral equations on the boundaries and then solving them using a technique suggested by Zhevandrov and Merzon (2003)

    Pectin methyl esterases and rhamnogalacturonan hydrolases: weapons for successful Monilinia laxa infection in stone fruit?

    The secretion of cell wall‐degrading enzymes is one of the mechanisms used by necrotrophic fungi to colonize host tissues. However, information about virulence factors of Monilinia spp., the causal agents of brown rot in stone fruit, is scarce. Plant cell walls have three main components that are broken down by fungal enzymes: cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin. In order to identify Monilinia laxa candidate proteins involved in pectin hydrolysis, two in vitro approaches were conducted: (i) phenotypic and ecophysiological characterization of growth of the pathogen at different pHs, in glucose‐ and pectin‐containing solid media for 7 days' incubation; and (ii) expression analysis of genes encoding M. laxa pectin methyl esterases (MlPMEs) and rhamnogalacturonan hydrolases (MlRG‐HYDs) after incubation for 0.5, 2, 6, 24 and 48 h in glucose‐ and pectin‐containing liquid media. Phenotypic tests showed the role of carbon source on M. laxa growth rate and aggressiveness, and indicated that pectinases were greatly affected by pH. Gene expression analyses uncovered differences among members of each family of pectinases and between the two families, defining sets of genes expressed at earlier (0.5–6 h) and later (48 h) phases. Notably, the up‐ or down‐regulation of these target genes was carbon source‐dependent. Finally, an in vivo study confirmed the synergistic and complementary role that these genes play in the M. laxa–stone fruit pathosystem. Based on these results, it is hypothesized that MlPME2, MlRG‐HYD1 and MlRG‐HYD2 may be potential virulence factors of M. laxa in the process from infection to colonization.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
