‘We kind of try to merge our own experience with the objectivity of the criteria’: The role of connoisseurship and tacit practice in undergraduate fine art assessment

This article explores connoisseurship in the context of fine art undergraduate assessment practice. I interviewed twelve fine art lecturers in order to explore and unpack the concept of connoisseurship in relation to subjectivity, objectivity and tacit practice. Building on the work of Bourdieu (1973, 1977, 1986) and Shay (2003, 2005), both of whom problematize the view that subjectivity and objectivity are binary opposites, my research illustrates the ways that connoisseurship is underpinned by informed professional judgements located in communities of practice. Within this particular conception of connoisseurship, the lecturers’ expertise is co-constituted in communities of assessors through participation and engagement. Standards reside in communities of practice

A comparison of UK equity and property duration

    Get PDF
This paper considers the duration of property and equity. A general formula for duration of asset classes is derived. It is shown that calculations which assume, usually implicitly, that the flow-through of inflation to cash flow is zero, produce misleadingly high durations for property and equities. These are typically in the range 15 to 25 years. Simulations using the formulae show that property has some bond-like characteristics. The results indicate that, for realistic flow-through rates, equities have a higher duration than property. The flow-through rate is the most important variable in the estimation of equities. Using historical data, equity duration is estimated at 8.65 years and property’s at 3.15 years. These are substantially lower than those commonly cited. If these values can be substantiated, and if higher values are used in practice, portfolio immunisation strategies may need to be reconsidered

technical reportIn traditional monolithic operating systems the con?? straints of working within the kernel have limited the sophistication of the schemes used to manage exe?? cutable program images By implementing an exe?? cutable image loader as a persistent user??space pro?? gram we can extend system program loading capabili?? ties In this paper we present OMOS an Object Meta?? Object Server which provides program loading facili?? ties as a special case of generic object instantiation We discuss the architecture of OMOS the extensible nature of that architecture and its application to the problem of dynamic program monitoring and optimiza?? tion We present several optimization strategies and the results of applying these strategies ?

Biological Pest Controls: Possibilities for Improved Implementation in Iowa

    Get PDF
Chemical insecticides are the standard means for reducing populations of insect pests in agricultural and horticultural settings. However, government regulations are restricting the use of a variety of pesticides for many agricultural uses. The requirement of registration for all pesticides labelled before 1984 has already resulted in the cancellation of approximately 20,000 pesticide registrations in 1989. In addition, pest resistance to insecticides (over 400 species), and an increased sensitivity in the general public to possible environmental and health hazards are forcing the agricultural industry to search for alternatives to chemical control

CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR LOCAL VERSUS OUT-OF-STATE GROWN SELECTED FRESH PRODUCE: THE CASE OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE

    Get PDF
Consumer behavior with respect to purchase regularity, satisfaction, origin, and willingness to pay for selected local versus non-Tennessee grown fresh produce is examined. Except for origin, consumer behavior with respect to the above is affected by income, of respondent, college education, and occupation. The pattern of significant variables changed by commodity. Tomatoes, followed by peaches, had the greatest local market potential. Local promotion of other products may be more difficult. Results suggested consumers have no strong preferences for or against locally grown fresh produce. The prices of locally grown commodities in Knoxville should be less than or equal to those of comparable quality non-Tennessee commodities.Consumer/Household Economics,

OMOS ? An object server for program execution

technical reportThe benefits of object-oriented programming are well known but popular operating systems provide very few object oriented features to users and few are im plemented using object oriented techniques themselves In this paper we discuss a mechanism for apply ing object oriented programming concepts to program binding linking and execution We describe OMOS an object meta object server that embodies a exible object framework The OMOS framework projects an object oriented structure onto programs and shared li braries that may not have been originally developed for use within an object oriented environment This framework provides natural facilities for inheritance interposition and overloading of operations as well as development of classes with dynamically evolving behavior ?

Improving Critical Reading Skills By Use Of Multiple Methods/Materials Individualized Instruction

    Get PDF
This practicum attempted to improve critical reading skills in the author\u27s seventh grade reading classes. The reading program implemented was an individualized reading program involving novels as the core of the program and using many materials and methods to teach critical reading skills. The components of the program were reading novels, student/teacher conferencing, skills instruction by the teacher, and independent skills practice. Evaluation of the program followed a survey and pre-test, post-test design. Students gained in critical reading skill and positive attitudes toward reading. The program will be used by all seventh and eighth grade classes in the author’s school during the next school year
