    A Podcast is a digital media file, which can be broadcasted through live streaming or downloaded as an audio or video file using specific computer software for delegated file formats. This study will focus on how lessons can be supported through the medium of Podcasting. It will explain how Podcasting can broaden the learning experience of Japanese learners of German through the collaborative process of creating a recorded episode that has been generated by learners. The Podcast itself becomes the vehicle for learning, a reference and a tool for teaching. On an individual level, motivation is generated where greater self-knowledge is developed through the discovery of individual learning and working styles. As the project progresses, awareness is promoted through the discovery of strengths and weaknesses. This leads to self-monitoring whereby students find and adopt suitable strategies on which to build or find strategies to cope with their needs. As a result, learning abilities are broadened and advanced through the goal of completing the specific task. Motivation is further strengthened through responsibility towards members of the group. Though language ability, learning styles and working styles within the group may be varied, the task of developing a Podcast calls for a co-operative environment in order for the learning to be collaborative. The technology used for Podcasting is easy to use and is an effective language learning tool that allows for creativity and critical thinking. It is a resource that supports learning and can easily be incorporated into classroom activities

    We engineer a brane picture for the reduction of Seiberg dualities from 4D to 3D, valid also in the presence of orientifold planes. We obtain effective 3D dualities on the circle by T-duality, geometrizing the non-perturbative superpotential which is an affine Toda potential.     In this paper we study the reduction of four-dimensional Seiberg duality to three dimensions from a brane perspective. We reproduce the non-perturbative dynamics of the three-dimensional field theory via a T-duality at finite radius and the action of Euclidean D-strings. In this way we also overcome certain issues regarding the brane description of Aharony duality.     Occurrence of acute oesophageal necrosis (black oesophagus) in a single tertiary centre

    Acute oesophageal necrosis (AON) is a rare condition characterised by the endoscopic finding of diffuse, circumferential, black mucosal pigmentation of the oesophagus, which typically stops at the gastro-oesophageal junction. This observational study aimed to assess the occurrence, clinical characteristics and outcomes of AON in a consecutive endoscopic cohort in a single tertiary university centre. A retrospective analysis of endoscopic data of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGE) was carried out from 2008 to 2018. Out of 25,970 UGE, 16 patients (0.06%) had AON; 75.0% were men with a median age of 75 years. Almost all patients underwent diagnosis during emergency UGE performed for gastrointestinal bleeding, but one patient was diagnosed during elective UGE for persistent vomiting and diarrhoea. All patients reported one or more pre-existing comorbidities and concomitant acute events. Two patients had AON as the first presentation of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES). One patient developed an oesophageal stenosis, and another patient presented a relapse of AON. Mortality was 50%, but no patient died as a direct consequence of AON. AON is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding diagnosed mainly during emergency UGE. Our study showed that ZES might manifest with this critical presentation, and endoscopists must be aware of this evidence

    Marine targets recognition through micro-motion estimation from SAR data

    The capability to perform Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) from SAR images has great importance for both civilian and military applications. However, this task becomes challenging when the quality and quantity of target information is not sufficient to reliably discriminate the targets. This is particularly important when dealing with marine targets, where features such as scattering intensities and shapes are common to many different targets. This paper investigates the possibility to enhance classification capabilities of marine targets in SAR images by exploiting the micro-motion information. This characterizing source of information, is extracted by applying Doppler sub-apertures and pixel tracking on SAR images containing the target of interest. The proposed approach is validated on real COSMO-SkyMed SAR data demonstrating the effectiveness to discriminate ships through their unique Doppler fingerprint

    Aerial photos, both in colour and in black and white, have always been very important tools in archaeological surveys. Sensors, called hyperspectral, were available on the market for some years: they are able to expand the research beyond the visible area of the electromagnetic spectrum as far as the thermal infrared too. The use of these sensors, at first restricted to the applications in the traditional fields of Remote Sensing (such as, for instance, Botany, Agronomy, Geology, Hydrology), was spreading, in recent years, to some sectors, such as archaeological surveys, which were unexplored before. The presence of structures and hollows in the top subsurface is likely to cause variations in humidity in the surface. These variations affect both vegetation, and some physical features of the ground such as thermal conductivity and capacity. Especially in the first hours of day, you can notice thermal anomalies due to different evaporation. The exam of these anomalies, carried out by the use of techniques of digital processing of images in the spectrum bands particularly sensitive to the abovementioned indicators, enables the photointerpreter to determine possible signs of underground structures of archaeological interest. The application of the remote sensing in archaeology allows to acquire, with rapidity, a lot of information connected to the territory; that's the reason why, together with the development of sensors, came out the necessity to take advantage from the potentialities offered by the GIS to manage, process and file the spatial dates acquired with the remote sensing techniques. In this work, in fact, the results produced with the image processing technique were implemented in a GIS and were overlaid on the historical and contemporary maps and on the DEM in order to produce, for each study area, a Prediction map of archaeological finds

    Distributed situation awareness in nuclear, chemical, and maritime domains

    The increase in size, automation and complexity of modern sociotechnical systems changed the dynamics of work environments and calls for new methodologies and metaphors towards safety of complex systems. Chemical, nuclear, and transportation (i.e. road, maritime, and aviation) industries are composed of various nested sub-systems where smooth coordination and communication are essential features to achieve continuous and safe operations. Even though such sub-systems exist since the industrial revolution, fewer studies have been conducted in these domains: to understand the work as it is done (rather than it is imagined), which is the only way to shed light about the variability in work performance and how these subsystems can combine to generate dangerous and unexpected outcomes. The theoretical framework of Distributed Situation Awareness provides a firm background to investigate the sub-systems that constitute the chemical, nuclear, and maritime industries/domains. This paper unfolds the key sub-systems (e.g., operators, human-computer interfaces, communication tools, and distant/different locations) that play a critical role in normal and abnormal situations in these industries. The complex interconnections among various artifacts are explained and their significance is assessed

    Digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 from high resolution satellite images

    This paper describes the first results of a study, carried out within the national research program “Cofin2001”, on the potential use of high resolution satellite images for making digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 and 1:10,000. Particularly, images from IKONOS II and QuickBird of four different types of areas were employed: the first area is the city of Palermo, a greatly urbanized area; the second area is the extra-urban territory near the town of Contessa Entellina in south-western Sicily; the third area is the famous tourist resort of Scopello, in the western Sicily; the last area is the Caselle Airport, a flat zone near Torino. The first three images were orthorectified by using Rational Functions Model (RFM), varying the number of the GCP and using a DEM with 10 m gridcell; the last image was orthorectified by using the Toutin model and a DEM with 40 m grid-cell

    "Pure" large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder. Report of a case and review of the literature

    Primary Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs) of the gallbladder are rare. Among all NETs of the gallbladder, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is exceedingly rare. In most of the cases LCNECs are combined with other histological components. We reviewed clinical presentation and management of all patients with "pure" LCNEC from published literature since the first case was published in 2000, as well as one patient from our experience. Only 7 cases of "pure" LCNEC has been described in the last 15 years, our case is the eighth. The diagnosis of gallbladder NETs is rarely made preoperatively since the presentation generally consists of non-specific symptoms including upper abdominal pain, discomfort, jaundice, weight loss. The majority of patients are identified incidentally at the time of cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis. It is not possible to differentiate preoperatively between gallbladder adenocarcinoma and gallbladder neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) with imaging techniques. The only curative therapeutic modality for LCNECs is a complete en bloc surgical resection, including regional lymph node clearances and hepatic lobectomy, but only in patients without multiple metastasis. LCNECs benefit from an aggressive surgical resection in combination with chemotherapy, if resectability is possible. If the tumour is non-resectable, the primary management is therefore medical and not surgical. All patients with LCNEC presented a poor prognosis with a median survival of 10 months after the initial diagnosis. Only in five patients (62.5%) a wide surgical excision was performed, while in the other cases the tumour was non-resectable or multiple liver metastases were present at diagnosis
