Examining the Interplay between Decision-making and Big Data Analytics in driving Decision Value: A Critical Realist Case

To improve organisational performance, much attention has been paid to the value that BDA can produce beyond data-driven decision-making. However, there has been less emphasis on decision value (DV) arising from BDA. To compound this, definitions of DV remain fragmented across different views from social, to technical and economic. We aim to develop an empirically grounded theoretical model characterising how BDA is used in organisations to realize DV and to provide a mechanism-based causal explanation of how DV arises from the interplay between BDA (technical subsystem) and decisionmaking(social subsystem) using a real-world environment. As a result, we propose using retroductive reasoning through Critical Realism (CR) as the overarching philosophy, and Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM) techniques to collect and analyse data. Potential contributions from this research will include the development of a mechanism-based theory explaining how DV arises from the interplay between BDA and decision-making

Mobile bullying in South Africa – exploring its nature, influencing factors and implications

Mobile bullying is a form of electronic bullying that is relatively new. It involves the use of mobile technology applications such as email, chat rooms, instant messaging and small text messages. This form of bullying often goes unnoticed. Victims, institutions and parents are unaware of how to deal with it and there is limited knowledge about its legal and social implications. Due to an increase in mobile web adoption as well as active mobile users in South Africa, mobile bullying is escalating and has become a major concern in schools and communities. There is limited empirical research examining this type of aggression in schools. We lack knowledge of the nature and prevalence in schools and there are no effective models to predict or measure the level of this aggression. The present study aims to bridge this gap by examining the nature, prevalence and implications of this form of aggression in various South African high schools. The study will also identify the significant factors influencing this aggression and aims to create awareness of the problem

This paper investigates the interplay between social media data analytics (SMDA) and strategic decision-making in the banking industry, to understand how these factors impact sales lead generation. Using the General Systems Theory as an integrative framework, we analysed semi-structured interviews and conducted a thematic analysis to identify patterns in the data. The study identifies and explores the constraints between the socio and technical aspects of decision-making and how they affect sales lead generation in banks. We present five themes that emerged from our analysis, including social media data (SMD) perceptions, challenges of data analytics, social media use for lead generation, data availability and quality, and subsystems of decision-making. By synthesizing our findings, we provide a thematic model to provide insights into the relationship between SMDA, strategic decision-making, and sales lead generation in the banking industry

The Nature Of Mobile Bullying & Victimisation In The Western Cape High Schools of South Africa

Cyberbullying is often operationalized as an aggression conducted by various electronic devices. However, these technologies differ in their characteristics and the distinctive aspects of their effects are not clearly known. The present study examined the nature and influence of cyberbullying committed using mobile phones in high schools in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. We surveyed 3621 students and the findings suggest that mobile phones could have greater cyber-bullying effect than other electronic devices. School culture had the greatest influence on mobile bullying, followed by anonymity. However, the influence of anonymity does not only depend on non-identification of the bully but on other factors like safety risk. We also found that it is important to examine gender influence at various stages of the bullying activities. Gender appears to influence mobile bullying at its initiation stage than at the promotion and maintenance stages. The implications of these findings are discussed
