Tidal energy machines: A comparative life cycle assessment
Marine energy in the UK is currently undergoing a period of exponential growth in terms of development and implementation. The current installed tidal energy capacity of around 4MW is expected to rise to provide up to 20% of the UK’s electricity demand by 2050 [5]. With this in mind, there is a huge range of energy devices, all seemingly promoted by their developers as the best method of extracting power from the ocean. Embodied energy is an important aspect of any power producing device or process, and is used to describe the amount of energy required to begin and maintain the process of energy generation. Until a device or process has generated this amount of energy it cannot be said to be a net contributor of energy. This work used Life Cycle Assessment to study four tidal energy devices, representing a cross section of the existing designs, and compares their embodied energy and carbon dioxide emissions. In order to ensure a fair comparison, a hypothetical installation site is used, with conditions typical of those found at potential array installation sites in the UK. The designs studied include a multi-blade turbine, two three blade horizontal axis turbine machines, and an Archimedes’ screw device. These machines were chosen to represent a cross section of device, foundation, installation and operation designs. They have all been developed to prototype stage, meaning that actual manufacturing data is available. Embodied energy is considered over the entire lifetime of each device, beginning with extraction of raw materials. Energy use from fabrication, transport, installation, lifetime maintenance, end-of-life decommissioning and recycling are all calculated, and compared to the energy generation from each device at the test site. Finally, the embodied energy; CO2 intensity; and energy payback periods are compared to those of conventional power generating systems as well as other renewable energy sources. A range of data sources are used. Embodied energy of steel has been provided by the World Steel Association. Of the four devices studied, all were found to achieve CO2 and energy payback within the first 12 years of their lifetime, and exhibited CO2 intensity of between 18 and 35 gCO2/kWh. This compares favourably to many current energy sources, and is likely to fall as technology improves, array size increases and industry experience progresses
On the Necessary Memory to Compute the Plurality in Multi-Agent Systems
We consider the Relative-Majority Problem (also known as Plurality), in
which, given a multi-agent system where each agent is initially provided an
input value out of a set of possible ones, each agent is required to
eventually compute the input value with the highest frequency in the initial
configuration. We consider the problem in the general Population Protocols
model in which, given an underlying undirected connected graph whose nodes
represent the agents, edges are selected by a globally fair scheduler.
The state complexity that is required for solving the Plurality Problem
(i.e., the minimum number of memory states that each agent needs to have in
order to solve the problem), has been a long-standing open problem. The best
protocol so far for the general multi-valued case requires polynomial memory:
Salehkaleybar et al. (2015) devised a protocol that solves the problem by
employing states per agent, and they conjectured their upper bound
to be optimal. On the other hand, under the strong assumption that agents
initially agree on a total ordering of the initial input values, Gasieniec et
al. (2017), provided an elegant logarithmic-memory plurality protocol.
In this work, we refute Salehkaleybar et al.'s conjecture, by providing a
plurality protocol which employs states per agent. Central to our
result is an ordering protocol which allows to leverage on the plurality
protocol by Gasieniec et al., of independent interest. We also provide a
-state lower bound on the necessary memory to solve the problem,
proving that the Plurality Problem cannot be solved within the mere memory

Light neutralino in the MSSM: An update with the latest LHC results
We discuss the scenario of light neutralino dark matter in the minimal
supersymmetric standard model, which is motivated by the results of some of the
direct detection experiments --- DAMA, CoGENT, and CRESST. We update our
previous analysis with the latest results of the LHC. We show that new LHC
constraints disfavour the parameter region that can reproduce the results of

Search-based procedural content generation
Recently, a small number of papers have appeared in which the authors implement stochastic search algorithms, such as evolutionary computation, to generate game content, such as levels, rules and weapons. We propose a taxonomy of such approaches, centring on what sort of content is generated, how the content is represented, and how the quality of the content is evaluated. The relation between search-based and other types of procedural content generation is described, as are some of the main research challenges in this new field. Values of sexual behaviour in Central and Eastern Europe
Despite the profusion of social cognitive models for the prediction of sexual behaviour, we have only limited knowledge as to the role of individual values in predicting risky sexual activity. This study assessed the relationship between a recently developed value structure and sexual behaviour in the context of rising HIV infection in central and eastern Europe. Five hundred and three respondents (business people, doctors and nurses) from Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Poland and Russia completed Schwartz’s Portrait Values Questionnaire and reported their condom use, partnership history and record of sexual disease. Results indicated that values had a moderate but consistent relationship with sexual behaviour, with riskier sexual activity reported by those high on Openness to Change, Hedonism and Self-Enhancement. These findings are discussed in the context of the need for culturally sensitive interventions in order to tackle the growing HIV epidemic in this region.This project was supported by a research grant from the Research Support Scheme operated by the Soros Foundation, Prague
Hepatitis C Virus infection in apparentenly healthy individuals with family history of diabetes in Vom, Plateau State Nigeria
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important public health problem worldwide. Its association with, and predisposing nature for diabetes mellitus (DM) has been long established. This research was carried out to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) amongst people with possible genetic predisposition to diabetes mellitus living in and around Vom, Plateau State, Nigeria. 188 subjects were screened after they filled a structured questionnaire to determine some of their demographic data, social habits and possible risk factors. 5 ml of blood was collected from each subject and sera separated out. Biotech's third generation ELISA Kit for HCV antibodies was used for the screening. Liver enzyme analysis was carried out on positive samples to determine their disease status. A prevalence of 14.36% was recorded with the highest seropositive group being those in the age bracket of 18 – 37 years. 13(13.40%) of males and 14(15.38%) of females were sero-positive. Liver enzyme analysis of sero-positive subjects showed increased levels which may imply early onset of liver damage. These result showed that these individuals could later suffer diabetes which may be triggered by their HCV infection if not treated. This is not over-looking the economic significance of their ill health, assuming they progress to cirrhotic HCV or develop hepatocelluar carcinoma due to HCV chronicity
Learning by hiring: the effects of scientists’ inbound mobility on research performance in academia
This study investigates the effects of scientists’ inbound mobility on the research performance of incumbent scientists in an academic setting. The theoretical framework integrates insights from learning theory and social comparison theory to suggest two main mechanisms behind these effects, localized learning and social comparison. The authors propose several hypotheses about the conditions that might intensify or weaken such effects. Specifically, the arrival of new scientific personnel is likely to exert stronger positive effects on the performance of incumbent scientists with shorter (cf. longer) organizational tenure; in addition, academic departments with less diversified expertise and with higher levels of internal collaborations likely reap greater benefits from learning by hiring. The empirical findings, based on a longitudinal analysis of a sample of 94 U.S. academic chemical engineering departments, provide empirical support for these contentions
The Scherk-Schwarz mechanism as a flux compactification with internal torsion
The aim of this paper is to make progress in the understanding of the
Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction in terms of a compactification in the
presence of background fluxes and torsion. From the eleven dimensional
supergravity point of view, we find that a general E6(6) S-S phase may be
obtained by turning on an appropriate background torsion, together with
suitable fluxes, some of which can be directly identified with certain
components of the four-form field-strength. Furthermore, we introduce a novel
(four dimensional) approach to the study of dualities between flux/torsion
compactifications of Type II/M-theory. This approach defines the action that
duality should have on the background quantities, in order for the E7(7)
invariance of the field equations and Bianchi identities to be restored also in
the presence of fluxes/torsion. This analysis further implies the
interpretation of the torsion flux as the T-dual of the NS three-form flux.Comment: Version published on J. High Energy Phy
A qualitative study of stakeholders' perspectives on the social network service environment
Over two billion people are using the Internet at present, assisted by the mediating activities of software agents which deal with the diversity and complexity of information. There are, however, ethical issues due to the monitoring-and-surveillance, data mining and autonomous nature of software agents. Considering the context, this study aims to comprehend stakeholders' perspectives on the social network service environment in order to identify the main considerations for the design of software agents in social network services in the near future. Twenty-one stakeholders, belonging to three key stakeholder groups, were recruited using a purposive sampling strategy for unstandardised semi-structured e-mail interviews. The interview data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis method. It was possible to identify three main considerations for the design of software agents in social network services, which were classified into the following categories: comprehensive understanding of users' perception of privacy, user type recognition algorithms for software agent development and existing software agents enhancement
