    Sea level change in the Malaysian seas from multi-satellite altimeter data

    Seas from satellite altimetry data of the Topex, Jason-1, ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat missions. During the past two decades, satellite altimeter has provided its capability in measuring the global mean of sea level with precision better than 1 mm/year. Sea level data retrieval and reduction were carried out using Radar Altimeter Database System (RADS). In RADS data processing, the recently updated environmental and geophysical corrections were applied. Sixth 1° × 1° areas were chosen for the altimeter data comparison and to find the best ocean tide model for Malaysian Seas, where the altimeter tracks are nearby to tide gauge locations. Similarity in the pattern of sea level variations indicated good agreements between tide gauge data and altimeter data using FES2004 ocean tide model. It also showed that the altimeter data can be used to investigate sea level rise for Malaysian Seas. Here, sea level variations for four areas in the Malaysian Seas have been investigated using 15 years of altimeter data. The altimeter sea level time series revealed that since 1993, the mean sea level in Malaysian Seas has been rising at a rate of between 1.42 – 4.08 mm/year. This information is important to study alternative energy extraction and environmental issues related to flood investigations and global warming

    The mediating effect of performance measures used in budget participation and managerial performance relationship

    In most organization, different performance measures are employed to assess different aspects of managers performance.Some of the measures have not been developed and some of them have been developed in a very selective way and some presented but not used or only partly used.Hence, this study examined the effect of performance measures used in budget participation and managerial performance relationship in Malaysian local authorities. A structural equation modeling was utilised to examine the direct and indirect effects of budget participation on managerial performance through path model analysis.The finding from the research shows that budget participation influence managerial performance via the mediating variable of the use of performance measures.This research survey was conducted only in Malaysian local authorities.Thus, result may not be generalized to other public organizations. The theoretical contribution of this study is to extent the earlier literatures by addressing effect in which, budget participation, the use of the performance measures can beinter-related in providing explanations of managerial performance.The practical contribution for this study is that its finding can have practical relevance in the current management setting in Malaysian government organization.The results from the present study also provide insights on the role of budget participation and the use of performance measures as management tool by local authorities’ managers in evaluating their performance

    Prevalence and factors associated with depressive symptoms in Malay women

    Background: Due to a dearth of research on depressive symptoms in Malaysia, particularly in Malay women, a community study was conducted to examine the prevalence and factors associated with current depressive symptoms in rural and urban Malay women with low socioeconomic status. Method: Four hundred eighty-seven women (N rural D 242, N urban D 245) were interviewed. Information on socio-demographic variables, potential risk factors (family history of mental health problems, lifetime major depressive symptoms, and current life stressors), and current depressive symptoms (measured by the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, CES-D) was collected. Results: The prevalence of current depressive symptoms (CES-D scores=>16) reported was 34.5%, while the prevalence of lifetime major depressive symptoms was 27.5%. A significantly higher rate of current depressive symptoms was observed in urban women compared to rural women, � chi-square (1, N=487)=3.99, p<.05. However, no significant difference was found in the two groups of women in the prevalence of lifetime major depressive symptoms. The results of the multiple hierarchical regression analysis indicated that three potential factors (family history of mental health problems, lifetime major depressive symptoms, and current life stressors) were positively associated with current depressive symptoms, accounting for 17.8% of the variance, over and above the socio-demographic variables

    Treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor: focus on imatinib mesylate

    Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a rare primary neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract, mesentery, or omentum. In the past, surgery has been the only effective treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of GIST has been revolutionized over the past decade, since expression of the receptor tyrosine kinase KIT was shown to occur on these tumors. Mutations in this proto-oncogene commonly cause constitutive activation of the KIT tyrosine kinase receptor, an important factor in the pathogenesis of the disease. The development of specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as imatinib mesylate, has led to a breakthrough in the treatment of advanced GIST. Treatment with this drug has led to significant improvements in survival, with overall response rates in excess of 80%. Side effects are common, but usually manageable. The success of this drug has led to further trials investigating its use in the pre- and postoperative situation. This review summarizes the current knowledge of GIST and imatinib treatment and possible future developments

    Spatial variations of rain intensity over a short length propagation for 5G links based on a rain gauge network

    Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency range is among operating bands designated for terrestrial 5G networks. A critical challenge of link-budgeting in mm-wave 5G networks is the precise estimation of rain attenuation for short-path links. The difficulties are further amplified in tropical and subtropical regions where the rainfall rate has a higher intensity. Different models have been proposed to predict rain attenuation. The distance factor is an important parameter in predicting total attenuation from specific rain attenuation. This study investigates the distance factor based on rain gauge networks and measured rain attenuation at 26 GHz for a 300 m link in Malaysia. Considerable discrepancies between available models were observed especially when applied for shorter path links. Also, significant variability of rain intensity is observed from the rain gauge network. This study recommends further investigation of the distance factor for a shorter link. Hence, a measurement campaign incorporating rain gauge networks was established to examine spatial variations of rain intensity over a less than 1 km link. The motivation is to develop a suitable distance factor model for 5G mm-wave propagation

The need to control access to certain information and resources has been taken seriously by the ICT community. This research believes that no single security method, algorithm, key or procedure is entirely secure. Hence, a combination of multiple security components is mandatory to provide a high level of protection against fraud and other threats. This research combines two security components, which are the smart card and fingerprint recognition. It looks into the vulnerabilities of magnetic-stripe cards and Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) or passwords widely used in systems today. As a result, the research proposed a framework for user identification and authentication in automatic-teller-machine (ATM) systems using fingerprints and smart cards as opposed to the PIN and magnetic-stripe cards

    Removing Ilmenite-Based Filter Cakes Using Hydrochloric Acid and Chelating Agent – Experimental Study

    Ilmenite is often used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids to increase the fluid density, but the formation of a filter cake on the borehole wall can impact cementing operations and reduce well productivity. To remove the filter cake, various techniques can be employed such as chemical treatments, mechanical methods, or a combination of both. The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of chemical removal of ilmenite-based filter cake using 7.5 wt.% hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydroxyethyl ethylenediamine triacetic acid (HEDTA) – chelating agent. The filter cakes were generated using API filter press under harsh conditions of 300 psi pressure and 250°F temperature. Sandstone cores (2.5-in. diameter and 1-in. thickness) were utilized to replicate the formation during filtration experiments. The filtrate fluid was collected and the sandstone cores with filter cakes were scanned using computerized tomography (CT) technology. Immediately after that, the cores and filter cakes were soaked with HCl–HEDTA solution for 6 hours, followed by CT-scanning the cores and remaining filter cakes again. After acidizing, the effluent solution was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma (ICP). Scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was used to analyze the dried filter cakes and remaining residue. The results showed that, the use of 7.5 wt.% HCl was effective in partially removing the ilmenite-based filter cake. Additionally, the use of HEDTA showed limited effect on the efficiency of filter cake removal, but it effectively prevented corrosion problems during the treatment. This study presents useful findings on removing ilmenite-based filter cake with a low acid concentration and reducing the risk of corrosion issues
