Semileptonic form factors - a model-independent approach
We demonstrate that the B->D(*) l nu form factors can be accurately predicted
given the slope parameter rho^2 of the Isgur-Wise function. Only weak
assumptions, consistent with lattice results, on the wavefunction for the light
degrees of freedom are required to establish this result. We observe that the
QCD and 1/m_Q corrections can be systematically represented by an effective
Isgur-Wise function of shifted slope. This greatly simplifies the analysis of
semileptonic B decay. We also investigate what the available semileptonic data
can tell us about lattice QCD and Heavy Quark Effective Theory. A rigorous
identity relating the form factor slope difference rho_D^2-rho_A1^2 to a
combination of form factor intercepts is found. The identity provides a means
of checking theoretically evaluated intercepts with experiment.Comment: 18 pages, Revtex, 4 postscript figures, uses epsfig.st
QCD string and the Lorentz nature of confinement
We address the question of the Lorentz nature of the effective long-range
interquark interaction generated by the QCD string with quarks at the ends.
Studying the Dyson-Schwinger equation for a heavy-light quark-antiquark system,
we demonstrate explicitly how a Lorentz-scalar interaction appears in the
Diraclike equation for the light quark, as a consequence of chiral symmetry
breaking. We argue that the effective interquark interaction in the Hamiltonian
of the QCD string with quarks at the ends stems from this effective scalar
interaction.Comment: LaTeX2e, 5 pages, uses jetpl.cls (included), to appear in JETP Let
From scalar to string confinement
We outline a connection between scalar quark confinement, a
phenomenologically successful concept heretofore lacking fundamental
justification, and QCD. Although scalar confinement does not follow from QCD,
there is an interesting and close relationship between them. We develop a
simple model intermediate between scalar confinement and the QCD string for
illustrative purposes. Finally, we find the bound state masses of scalar,
time-component vector, and string confinement analytically through
semi-classical quantization.Comment: ReVTeX, 9 pages, 5 figure
Analytic Quantization of the QCD String
We perform an analytic semi-classical quantization of the straight QCD string
with one end fixed and a massless quark on the other, in the limits of orbital
and radial dominant motion. We compare our results to the exact numerical
semi-classical quantization. We observe that the numerical semi-classical
quantization agrees well with our exact numerical canonical quantization.Comment: RevTeX, 10 pages, 9 figure
Quantum critical points with the Coulomb interaction and the dynamical exponent: when and why z=1
A general scenario that leads to Coulomb quantum criticality with the
dynamical critical exponent z=1 is proposed. I point out that the long-range
Coulomb interaction and quenched disorder have competing effects on z, and that
the balance between the two may lead to charged quantum critical points at
which z=1 exactly. This is illustrated with the calculation for the Josephson
junction array Hamiltonian in dimensions D=3-\epsilon. Precisely in D=3,
however, the above simple result breaks down, and z>1. Relation to other
theoretical studies is discussed.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 1 ps figur
The P_33(1232) resonance contribution into the amplitudes M_{1+}^{3/2},E_{1+}^{3/2},S_{1+}^{3/2} from an analysis of the p(e,e'p)\pi^0 data at Q^2 = 2.8, 3.2, and 4 (GeV/c)^2 within dispersion relation approach
Within the fixed-t dispersion relation approach we have analysed the TJNAF
and DESY data on the exclusive p(e,e'p)\pi^0 reaction in order to find the
P_{33}(1232) resonance contribution into the multipole amplitudes
M_{1+}^{3/2},E_{1+}^{3/2},S_{1+}^{3/2}. As an input for the resonance and
nonresonance contributions into these amplitudes the earlier obtained solutions
of the integral equations which follow from dispersion relations are used. The
obtained values of the ratio E2/M1 for the \gamma^* N \to P_{33}(1232)
transition are: 0.039\pm 0.029, 0.121\pm 0.032, 0.04\pm 0.031 for Q^2= 2.8,
3.2, and 4 (GeV/c)^2, respectively. The comparison with the data at low Q^2
shows that there is no evidence for the presence of the visible pQCD
contribution into the transition \gamma N \to P_{33}(1232) at Q^2=3-4 GeV^2.
The ratio S_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2} for the resonance parts of multipoles is:
-0.049\pm 0.029, -0.099\pm 0.041, -0.085\pm 0.021 for Q^2= 2.8, 3.2, and 4
(GeV/c)^2, respectively. Our results for the transverse form factor G_T(Q^2) of
the \gamma^* N \to P_{33}(1232) transition are lower than the values obtained
from the inclusive data. With increasing Q^2, Q^4G_T(Q^2) decreases, so there
is no evidence for the presence of the pQCD contribution here too
On the S-wave piD-scattering length in the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron
The S-wave scattering length of the strong pion-deuteron (pi D) scattering is
calculated in the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron suggested in
[1,2].The theoretical result agrees well with the experimental data. The
important role of the Delta-resonance contribution to the elastic pi
D-scattering is confirmed.Comment: 7 pages, no figures, accepted for publication in Z. Phys.
Inflation Assisted by Heterotic Axions
We explore the possibility of obtaining inflation in weakly coupled heterotic
string theory, where the model dependent axions are responsible for driving
inflation. This model can be considered as a certain extrapolation of
-inflation, and is an attempt to explicitly realize the so
called N-flation proposal in string theory. The instanton generated potential
for the axions essentially has two parameters; a natural mass scale and the
string coupling . For isotropic compactifications leading to of order
axions in the four dimensional spectrum we find that with
the observed temperature fluctuations in the
CMB are correctly reproduced. We assume an initially random distribution for
the vevs of the axions. The spectral index, , is generically more red
than for -inflation. The greater the vevs, the more red the
spectral index becomes. Allowing for a wide range of vevs 55 -foldings from
the end of inflation, we find . The
tensor-to-scalar ratio, , is more sensitive to the vevs, but typically
smaller than in -inflation. Furthermore, in the regime where the
leading order theory is valid, is bounded by . The spectral index
and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are correlated. For example,
corresponds to .Comment: 1+21 pages, 2 figures, v2: Typos corrected, v3: Typos, very minor

Sulfur analysis of Bolu-Mengen lignite before and after microbiological treatment using reductive pyrolysis and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry
Atmospheric pressure-temperature programmed reduction coupled with on-line mass spectrometry (AP-TPR/MS) is used for the first time on microbiologically treated coal samples as a technique to monitor the degree of desulfurization of the various sulfur functionalities. The experimental procedure enables the identification of both organic and inorganic sulfur species present in the coal matrix. A better insight in the degradation of the coal matrix and the accompanying processes during the AP-TPR experiment is obtained by a quantitative differentiation of the sulfur. The determination of the sulfur balance for the reductive pyrolysis gives an overview of the side reactions and their relative contribution in the total process. The volatile sulfur species are unambiguously identified using AP-TPR off-line coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In this way, fundamental mechanisms and reactions that occur during the reductive pyrolysis could be quantified, explaining the differences in AP-TPR recoveries. Therefore, this study gives a clearer view on the possibilities and limitations of AP-TPR as a technique to monitor sulfur functionalities in coal
