Transverse oscillations of two coronal loops
We study transverse fast magnetohydrodynamic waves in a system of two coronal
loops modeled as smoothed, dense plasma cylinders in a uniform magnetic field.
The collective oscillatory properties of the system due to the interaction
between the individual loops are investigated from two points of view. Firstly,
the frequency and spatial structure of the normal modes are studied. The system
supports four trapped normal modes in which the loops move rigidly in the
transverse direction. The direction of the motions is either parallel or
perpendicular to the plane containing the axes of the loops. Two of these modes
correspond to oscillations of the loops in phase, while in the other two they
move in antiphase. Thus, these solutions are the generalization of the kink
mode of a single cylinder to the double cylinder case. Secondly, we analyze the
time-dependent problem of the excitation of the pair of tubes. We find that
depending on the shape and location of the initial disturbance, different
normal modes can be excited. The frequencies of normal modes are accurately
recovered from the numerical simulations. In some cases, because of the
simultaneous excitation of several eigenmodes, the system shows beating and the

Computer aided diagnosis for cardiovascular diseases based on ECG signals : a survey
The interpretation of Electroencephalography (ECG) signals is difficult, because even subtle changes in the waveform can indicate a serious heart disease. Furthermore, these waveform changes might not be present all the time. As a consequence, it takes years of training for a medical practitioner to become an expert in ECG-based cardiovascular disease diagnosis. That training is a major investment in a specific skill. Even with expert ability, the signal interpretation takes time. In addition, human interpretation of ECG signals causes interoperator and intraoperator variability. ECG-based Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) holds the promise of improving the diagnosis accuracy and reducing the cost. The same ECG signal will result in the same diagnosis support regardless of time and place. This paper introduces both the techniques used to realize the CAD functionality and the methods used to assess the established functionality. This survey aims to instill trust in CAD of cardiovascular diseases using ECG signals by introducing both a conceptional overview of the system and the necessary assessment method
Observations of neutral circulation at mid-latitudes during the Equinox Transition Study
Measurements of ion drift velocity made by the Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar have been used to calculate the meridional neutral wind velocity during the Sept. 17 to 24, 1984 period. Strong daytime southward neutral surges were observed during the magnetically disturbed days of September 19 and 23, in contrast to the small daytime winds obtained as expected during the magnetically quiet days. The surge on September 19 was also seen at Arecibo. In addition, two approaches have been used to calculate the meridional wind component from the radar-derived height of the F-layer electron density peak. Results confirm the wind surge, particularly when the strong electric fields measured during the disturbed days are included in the calculations. The two approaches for the F-layer peak wind calculations are applied to the radar-derived electron density peak height as a function of latitude to study the variation of the southward daytime surges with latitude
Explicit solution of the linearized Einstein equations in TT gauge for all multipoles
We write out the explicit form of the metric for a linearized gravitational
wave in the transverse-traceless gauge for any multipole, thus generalizing the
well-known quadrupole solution of Teukolsky. The solution is derived using the

'It's a Form of Freedom': The experiences of people with disabilities within equestrian sport
This paper explores the embodied, gendered experiences of disabled horseâriders. Drawing on data from five inâdepth interviews with paradressage riders, the ways in which their involvement in elite disability sport impacts upon their sense of identity and confidence are explored, as well as the considerable health and social benefits that this involvement brings. Social models of disability are employed and the shortcomings of such models, when applied to disability sport, are highlighted. The data presented here demonstrates the necessity of seeing disability sport as an embodied experience and acknowledging the importance of impairment to the experiences of disabled athletes. Living within an impaired body is also a gendered experience and the implications of this when applied to elite disability sport are considered
Are biogenic emissions a significant source of summertime atmospheric toluene in the rural Northeastern United States?
Summertime atmospheric toluene enhancements at Thompson Farm in the rural northeastern United States were unexpected and resulted in a toluene/benzene seasonal pattern that was distinctly different from that of other anthropogenic volatile organic compounds. Consequently, three hydrocarbon sources were investigated for potential contributions to the enhancements during 2004â2006. These included: (1) increased warm season fuel evaporation coupled with changes in reformulated gasoline (RFG) content to meet US EPA summertime volatility standards, (2) local industrial emissions and (3) local vegetative emissions. The contribution of fuel evaporation emission to summer toluene mixing ratios was estimated to range from 16 to 30 pptv dâ1, and did not fully account for the observed enhancements (20â50 pptv) in 2004â2006. Static chamber measurements of alfalfa, a crop at Thompson Farm, and dynamic branch enclosure measurements of loblolly pine trees in North Carolina suggested vegetative emissions of 5 and 12 pptv dâ1 for crops and coniferous trees, respectively. Toluene emission rates from alfalfa are potentially much larger as these plants were only sampled at the end of the growing season. Measured biogenic fluxes were on the same order of magnitude as the influence from gasoline evaporation and industrial sources (regional industrial emissions estimated at 7 pptv dâ1 and indicated that local vegetative emissions make a significant contribution to summertime toluene enhancements. Additional studies are needed to characterize the variability and factors controlling toluene emissions from alfalfa and other vegetation types throughout the growing season
