Microchannels analogues for the study of viscoelastic fluid flows through porous media
This paper was presented at the 3rd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2011), which was held at the Makedonia Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki in Greece. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Thessaly, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute. This work studies the flow behavior and related pressure losses of viscoelastic polymer solutions in microchannels with two different sequences of contraction/expansion, disposed in a symmetric and an asymmetric arrangement, respectively. These microfluidic devices are proposed as simplified microchannel analogues for the flow of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids through porous media. The results show that the symmetric configuration mimics the pressure gradient of these polymer solutions through a porous medium at low flow rates (below a critical Deborah number, Decr), while the asymmetric arrangement gives the asymptotic limit at high De values (above Decr) as a consequence of the intrinsic differences in the extensional rate profiles defined by each microgeometry.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT),

Anisotropic field dependence of the magnetic transition in Cu2Te2O5Br2
We present the results of measurements of the thermal conductivity of
Cu2Te2O5Br2, a compound where tetrahedra of Cu^{2+} ions carrying S=1/2 spins
form chains along the c-axis of the tetragonal crystal structure. The thermal
conductivity kappa was measured along both the c- and the a-direction as a
function of temperature between 3 and 300 K and in external magnetic fields H
up to 69 kOe, oriented both parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis. Distinct
features of kappa(T) were observed in the vicinity of T_N=11.4 K in zero
magnetic field. These features are unaltered in external fields which are
parallel to the c-axis, but are more pronounced when a field is applied
perpendicularly to the c-axis. The transition temperature increases upon
enhancing the external field, but only if the field is oriented along the
a-axis.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Primary healthcare and the construction of thematic health networks: what role can they play?
The enhancement of primary healthcare has been a core strategy for the empowerment of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Recent guidelines issued by OPAS and the Ministry of Health highlight the role it has played as a thematic communication network center, a regulating agent for the access and use of services required for comprehensive healthcare. Sponsored by PPSUS/Fapesp, this study examines the possibilities of the primary healthcare network exercising such a strategic function. Life narratives involving 15 regular users were produced in two cities of ABC Paulista, which have adopted the Family Health Strategy for the organization of their primary healthcare networks. The study presents three main findings: the primary healthcare network serves as an outpost of SUS by producing user values even for high complexity service users; the primary network is perceived is a place for simple care needs; there is shared impotence between users and teams when it comes to the network functioning as the coordinator of care, indicating that it does not possess the technological, operational and organizational material conditions or symbolic conditions (values, meanings, and representations) to be in a central position in the coordination of thematic healthcare networks.O fortalecimento da atenção básica tem sido valorizado como estratégia central para a construção do SUS.
Primary Care Sensitive Hospitalization: users detect flaws on the access to services
The aim of this study is to analyze and understand the reasons for the occurrence of sensitive hospitalizations in accordance with users. Qualitative study conducted with users who were admitted to Pedreira General Hospital, in São Paulo. The data was collected through semi structured interviews and thereafter, transcribed and processed in the electronic program Alceste. When analyzing the content, the access was seized fundamentally as an empirical category, bringing up problems that later deserved, from the Brazilian Ministry of Health, a specific Program to improve the quality and access to primary care. The hierarchical and pyramidal organization shape from the health system in the city of São Paulo can be one of the important aspects for the access matter and established as an important restricting factor in the primary care role in reducing or even preventing the occurrence of these hospitalizations
Comfort from the perspective of families of people hospitalized in the intensive care unit
This study aimed at understanding the meaning of comfort to the families of people in intensive care units. It consists of a qualitative study carried out in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Salvador-Bahia. Fourteen family members were interviewed. The authors utilized the theoretical principles of symbolic interactionism and the technique of qualitative data analysis. Results indicated that the categories Safety, Receptiveness, Information, Proximity, Social and Spiritual Support, Convenience and Integration expressed the meaning of comfort, which was comprised of reliability in terms of technical-scientific competence and a supportive and sensitive attitude of the team, chance of recovery, access to information and the opportunity to be close to the patient, support of people in their social life, spiritual sources and the environmental structure of the hospital, preservation of self-care and routine activities. It was concluded that the family is important as objects and subjects of the actions in healthcare and must be the focus in public health policies and programs in Brazil
