The study Lehrverurteilungen-kirchentrennend? and its statements on justification: analysis and critique

    Get PDF
Lehrverurteilungen-kirchentrennend? is a study issued by a group of German theologians in 1986 considering the fundamental church dividing condemnations of the reformation era regarding the doctrines of justification, the sacraments and the ministry. The study sought to investigate whether these condemnations maintain their dividing power even today. Though, generally speaking, it found that they did not, its results are open to question. This thesis investigates whether its statements on justification are tenable. Since the study confined itself to the consideration of Lutheran and Roman-Catholic condemnations, this thesis concentrates on the Lutheran/Roman-Catholic dialogue only. The thesis is divided into the following parts. Section A starts by giving a brief introduction to the mediaeval origins of the discussion of justification in the reformation era. In Chapter II several Roman-Catholic studies on Luther and Protestant studies on the Council of Trent are examined, along with some modern ecumenical approaches to the problem of justification. The concluding chapter of the introduction gives details of the study Lehrverurteilungen-kirchentren- nend? itself. The study's findings can only be criticised on the basis of a thorough investigation of both Luther's and the Council of Trent's account of justification. Therefore section B gives a detailed comparison of Luther's view on justification and the Council of Trent's decree on justification following the seven "distinguishing doctrines" identified by the study. The investigation confirms the distinguishing nature of these doctrines. Section C investigates the study's findings using the same structure as section B. The conclusion of this section is that the study's arguement is in most cases a weak one. Finally section D gives an evaluation of the study

Oxidation of allylic and benzylic alcohols to aldehydes and carboxylic acids

    Get PDF
An oxidation of allylic and benzylic alcohols to the corresponding carboxylic acids is effected by merging a Cu-catalyzed oxidation using O2 as a terminal oxidant with a subsequent chlorite oxidation (Lindgren oxidation). The protocol was optimized to obtain pure products without chromatography or crystallization. Interception at the aldehyde stage allowed for Z/E-isomerization, thus rendering the oxidation stereoconvergent with respect to the configuration of the starting material

Epidemiology of frequent attenders: a 3-year historic cohort study comparing attendance, morbidity and prescriptions of one-year and persistent frequent attenders

BACKGROUND: General Practitioners spend a disproportionate amount of time on frequent attenders. So far, trials on the effect of interventions on frequent attenders have shown negative results. However, these trials were conducted in short-term frequent attenders. It would be more reasonable to target intervention at persistent frequent attenders. Typical characteristics of persistent frequent attenders, as opposed to 1-year frequent attenders and non-frequent attenders, may generate hypotheses regarding modifiable factors on which new randomized trials may be designed. METHODS: We used the data of all 28,860 adult patients from 5 primary healthcare centers. Frequent attenders were patients whose attendance rate ranked in the (age and sex adjusted) top 10 percent during 1 year (1-year frequent attenders) or 3 years (persistent frequent attenders). All other patients on the register over the 3-year period were referred to as non-frequent attenders. The lists of medical problems coded by the GP using the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC) were used to assess morbidity.First, we determined which proportion of 1-year frequent attenders was still a frequent attender during the next two consecutive years and calculated the GPs' workload for these patients. Second, we compared morbidity and number of prescriptions for non-frequent attenders, 1-year frequent attenders and persistent frequent attenders. RESULTS: Of all 1-year frequent attenders, 15.4% became a persistent frequent attender equal to 1.6% of all patients. The 1-year frequent attenders (3,045; 10.6%) were responsible for 39% of the face-to-face consultations; the 470 patients who would become persistent frequent attenders (1.6%) were responsible for 8% of all consultations in 2003. Persistent frequent attenders presented more social problems, more psychiatric problems and medically unexplained physical symptoms, but also more chronic somatic diseases (especially diabetes). They received more prescriptions for psychotropic medication. CONCLUSION: One out of every seven 1-year-frequent attenders (15.4%) becomes a persistent frequent attender. Compared with non-frequent attenders, and 1-year frequent attenders, persistent frequent attenders consume more health care and are diagnosed not only with more somatic diseases but especially more social problems, psychiatric problems and medically unexplained physical symptoms

Feasible mitigation actions in developing countries

    Get PDF
Energy use is not only crucial for economic development, but is also the main driver of greenhouse-gas emissions. Developing countries can reduce emissions and thrive only if economic growth is disentangled from energy-related emissions. Although possible in theory, the required energy-system transformation would impose considerable costs on developing nations. Developed countries could bear those costs fully, but policy design should avoid a possible 'climate rent curse', that is, a negative impact of financial inflows on recipients' economies. Mitigation measures could meet further resistance because of adverse distributional impacts as well as political economy reasons. Hence, drastically re-orienting development paths towards low-carbon growth in developing countries is not very realistic. Efforts should rather focus on 'feasible mitigation actions' such as fossil-fuel subsidy reform, decentralized modern energy and fuel switching in the power sector

Analyse und Klassifikation der hannoverschen IT Kompetenzen in einer variablen Datenbasis

    Get PDF
