“Let there be No Quarrel among Us” (Genesis 13:8-9): Using Abraham’s Model for Restructuring in Nigeria

Nigeria is blessed with so many natural resources which are the principal sources of income through which she is sustained. Disparity in the income so generated has been posing a serious challenge to almost every Nigerian administration on the ratio for its sharing, hence  becoming a major problem and challenge affecting federal practice in Nigeria. The problem of resource control and restructuring so noticed has been as a result of disagreement within the three tiers of government of which no one seems to accept to sacrifice some pleasures in order to ensure that peace is attained. It will be germane to posit that for there to be a restructuring in Nigeria that will be effectively sustained and generally satisfactory, the Abraham’s model must be adopted who gave Lot his nephew the opportunity to choose from the best part of the vast arable land so that there may be no quarrel among them. In this regard therefore, Abraham is seen as a leader who is endowed with virtues of love, peace, selflessness and sacrifice and must be emulated by Nigeria leaders if restructuring will be achieved. This work adopts a sociological method and will be theoretically framed with relative deprivation theory. The paper observes that there has been tussle within the tiers of government on the sharing formula which has not been generally accepted. Secondly, it discovers that there has been agitations by the host states on resource control and restructuring which is not workable for the federal government, it goes on to observe that Abraham’s model could help to solve the problem if the federal government assumes the role of Abraham by allowing producing states to determine the percentage of the allocation. It finally observes that there has been lack of a leader who has the vision and willingness to handle the problem once and for all which has made the problems to continue lingering. The paper therefore recommends that the tiers of government should be willing to make sacrifices in order to ensure a harmonious and peaceful co-existence. The work also recommends the need for visionary and selfless leaders who will sincerely tackle and implement true and acceptable federalism for the good of the common man

An Assessment of the Early Theories of Religion by Edward B. Tylor, James G. Frazer, Sigmund Freud and Their Nexus with Cognitive Theorizing

From the world on go, man has been asking questions on the origin and formation of religion. These questions are as a result of the quest in man to understand his object of worship, the Supreme Being or the ultimate reality. Hence it has been ascertained that man is homo-religiosus and as such is religiously incurable. It has also been established that people have faith because beliefs make sense in so far as they hold value and are comprehensible. This is also evidenced in the level and quest for people’s religiosity in the present dispensation. Religion as it is practiced today developed from theories which are posited by scholars in trying to give their explanations to it. Among those scholars are Edward BurnettTylor, James George Frazer and Sigmund Freud who made their points from both substantive theory which is focusing on the value of religion for its adherent and functional perspectives which is more interested with what religion does. Their theories were not without some influence from their intellectual backgrounds. It is germane to posit that in trying a work of this nature, the paper makes use of library and internet sources in its research. The paper therefore finds that religion is an aspect of life that is very important to human life, hence the quest for every scholar to makea contribution to it. It concludes that faith and believes arise from the normal function of the human mind of which the human minds acquire, generate, and transmit religious thoughts, practices, and schemas by means of ordinary cognitive capacities. The Inseparable Union of Religion and Economy: A Critical Analysis

The growth of economy is seen as a fundamental measurement that can be used to assess a country’s productive capacity in terms of goods and services. It is normally predicted using the percent rate of increase in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and is correlated with numerous factors in the society which includes quality of life. Religion as a prominent dimension of culture can be a considerable factor in one’s quality of life. However, it is often overlooked as a potential determinant of economic growth but it has been underscored that it helps in boasting the economic growth of the society. In this work therefore, a cursory effort will be made to divulge some of those roles religion plays in her contribution to a better economy and to examine how religious activities or policies of some religious traditions affect or boast the economy of a given section of the society. Phenomenological approach was adopted in this study and the theory of Religious Economy was used. The paper recommends based on findings that religion should not be seen in isolation as it helps to determine the growth of the economy of every given society

The Manifestation of Religion in the Public Sphere: A Contemporary Debate

Religion is ever present with human being. This is because man from his origin is seen to be incurably religious; hence he is addressed as homo-religiosus. It is important to note that with the advancement of technology and the development of the society, some scholars tend to posit that religion in no distant time will give way to secularization, but despite the rate of secularization in Europe and other western societies, religion still plays a vital and prominent role to human being. This work will be studied sociologically and will adopt the theory of crossing and dwelling. This is because religion is not a stagnant phenomenon but crosses and cuts across every facet of life. The paper therefore observes that religion is not only relevant to human being but it maintains a prominent position in the public sphere. It also finds that man is a religious animal and as long as he exists, religion will exist. The paper concludes that religion gives ultimate answers to ultimate questions which neither science nor philosophy has answered.
