Serological Survey Of Salmonella gallinarum Antibody In Chickens Around Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria
A serological survey of the prevalence of antibodies to Salmonella gallinarum among chickens under two different management systems around Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria was carried out using the standard plate agglutination test. The objective of this study was to determine serologically the prevalence of antibodies against Salmonella gallinarum among apparently healthy chickens around Jos. A total of 700 serum samples made up of 450 exotic and 250 local breed of chickens were used for this study with 37.9% seropositvity. In the free range system (19.3%) of the flocks sampled were seropositive for Salmonella gallinarium antibodies while in the semi intensive, 18.6% of the flock tested positive. The serum agglutination test (SAT) was adapted to the microtitre format used to determine somatic and flagella titres. The antigen used for this study was specific for S. gallinarum, hence differentiation between species infection was assessed in this study. Perhaps the most feasible way to eradicate the disease is to encourage farmers (both small and large scale) to break the disease cycle at their levels by embarking on prompt and regular vaccination programmes. It is thus concluded that Salmonella gallinarum (fowl typhoid) is present in the area investigated. Fowl typhoid may continue to have a negative effect on the economy of poultry production in Nigeria if not controlled. A statistical analysis was precluded due to inadequate data sets
Analysis of an Intelligent Temperature Transmitter for Process Control
In recent times, transmitters that incorporate microprocessor to perform various intelligent functions have been developed by various manufacturers. This paper presents an overview of the evolution in transmitter technology while highlighting key factors which have influenced the evolution. It also identifies low power microprocessor and analog to digital converters working with the basic sensor circuit as the key propellants in the advancement of transmitter technology. Despite several sensors available in the process control industry, the authors focus on temperature sensors and analyze a typical Rosemount Intelligent Temperature Transmitter (RITT) with a view to identifying and comparing how experimental results vary from established parameters in the datasheet. Simulation results show that the resistance of the RITT’s Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) varies directly with applied temperature. Percentage error shows acceptable points at -0.04%, 0.04% and -0.1%. For higher percentage error readings, it is necessary to connect a resistor of value between 250Ω and 1100Ω between the current loop and the transmitter. The future of transmitter technology is however the wireless sensor node (WSN) incorporating the Sensirion SHT11 temperature sensor.http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v34i3.2
Self-medication with antibiotics for the treatment of menstrual symptoms in southwest Nigeria: a cross-sectional study
Background: Self-medication with antibiotics is an important factor contributing to the development of bacterial
antibiotic resistance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics
for the treatment of menstrual symptoms among university women in Southwest Nigeria.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to female undergraduate and graduate students (n = 706) at
four universities in Southwest Nigeria in 2008. The universities were selected by convenience and the study
samples within each university were randomly selected cluster samples. The survey was self-administered and
included questions pertaining to menstrual symptoms, analgesic and antibiotic use patterns, and demographics.
Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression.
Results: The response rate was 95.4%. Eighty-six percent (95% CI: 83-88%) of participants experienced menstrual
symptoms, and 39% (95% CI: 36-43%) reported using analgesics to treat them. Overall, 24% (95% CI: 21-27%) of
participants reported self-medicated use of antibiotics to treat the following menstrual symptoms: cramps, bloating,
heavy bleeding, headaches, pimples/acne, moodiness, tender breasts, backache, joint and muscle pain. Factors
associated with this usage were: lower levels of education (Odds Ratio (OR): 2.8, 95% CI: 1.1-7.1, p-value: 0.03); nonscience
major (OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.03-2.50, p-value: 0.04); usage of analgesics (OR: 3.17, 95% CI: 2.07-4.86, p-value:
<0.001); and mild to extreme heavy bleeding (OR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.01-2.67, p-value: 0.05) and pimples/acne (OR: 1.57,
95% CI: 0.98-2.54, p-value: 0.06). Ampicillin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and metronidazole were used to treat the
most symptoms. Doctors or nurses (6%, 95% CI: 4-7%), friends (6%, 95% CI: 4-7%) and family members (7%, 95% CI:
5-8%) were most likely to recommend the use of antibiotics for menstrual symptoms, while these drugs were most
often obtained from local chemists or pharmacists (10.2%, 95% CI: 8-12%).
Conclusions: This is the first formal study to report that approximately 1 out of 4 university women surveyed in
Southwest Nigeria self-medicate with antibiotics to treat menstrual symptoms. This practice could provide monthly,
low-dose exposures to antibiotics among users. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the impacts of selfmedication
on student health
Improving access to health care for malaria in Africa: a review of literature on what attracts patients
BACKGROUND: Increasing access to health care services is considered central to improving the health of populations. Existing reviews to understand factors affecting access to health care have focused on attributes of patients and their communities that act as 'barriers' to access, such as education level, financial and cultural factors. This review addresses the need to learn about provider characteristics that encourage patients to attend their health services. METHODS: This literature review aims to describe research that has identified characteristics that clients are looking for in the providers they approach for their health care needs, specifically for malaria in Africa. Keywords of 'malaria' and 'treatment seek*' or 'health seek*' and 'Africa' were searched for in the following databases: Web of Science, IBSS and Medline. Reviews of each paper were undertaken by two members of the team. Factors attracting patients according to each paper were listed and the strength of evidence was assessed by evaluating the methods used and the richness of descriptions of findings. RESULTS: A total of 97 papers fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The review of these papers identified several characteristics that were reported to attract patients to providers of all types, including lower cost of services, close proximity to patients, positive manner of providers, medicines that patients believe will cure them, and timeliness of services. Additional categories of factors were noted to attract patients to either higher or lower-level providers. The strength of evidence reviewed varied, with limitations observed in the use of methods utilizing pre-defined questions and the uncritical use of concepts such as 'quality', 'costs' and 'access'. Although most papers (90%) were published since the year 2000, most categories of attributes had been described in earlier papers. CONCLUSION: This paper argues that improving access to services requires attention to factors that will attract patients, and recommends that public services are improved in the specific aspects identified in this review. It also argues that research into access should expand its lens to consider provider characteristics more broadly, especially using methods that enable open responses. Access must be reconceptualized beyond the notion of barriers to consider attributes of attraction if patients are to receive quality care quickly
Maternal and child health interventions in Nigeria: a systematic review of published studies from 1990 to 2014
BACKGROUND: Poor maternal and child health indicators have been reported in Nigeria since the 1990s. Many interventions have been instituted to reverse the trend and ensure that Nigeria is on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. This systematic review aims at describing and indirectly measuring the effect of the Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) interventions implemented in Nigeria from 1990 to 2014.
METHODS: PubMed and ISI Web of Knowledge were searched from 1990 to April 2014 whereas POPLINE® was searched until 16 February 2015 to identify reports of interventions targeting Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health in Nigeria. Narrative and graphical synthesis was done by integrating the results of extracted studies with trends of maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and under five mortality (U5MR) derived from a joint point regression analysis using Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey data (1990-2013). This was supplemented by document analysis of policies, guidelines and strategies of the Federal Ministry of Health developed for Nigeria during the same period.
RESULTS: We identified 66 eligible studies from 2,662 studies. Three interventions were deployed nationwide and the remainder at the regional level. Multiple study designs were employed in the enrolled studies: pre- and post-intervention or quasi-experimental (n = 40; 61%); clinical trials (n = 6;9%); cohort study or longitudinal evaluation (n = 3;5%); process/output/outcome evaluation (n = 17;26%). The national MMR shows a consistent reduction (Annual Percentage Change (APC) = -3.10%, 95% CI: -5.20 to -1.00 %) with marked decrease in the slope observed in the period with a cluster of published studies (2004-2014). Fifteen intervention studies specifically targeting under-five children were published during the 24 years of observation. A statistically insignificant downward trend in the U5MR was observed (APC = -1.25%, 95% CI: -4.70 to 2.40%) coinciding with publication of most of the studies and development of MNCH policies.
CONCLUSIONS: The development of MNCH policies, implementation and publication of interventions corresponds with the downward trend of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria. This systematic review has also shown that more MNCH intervention research and publications of findings is required to generate local and relevant evidence
Hypoglycemic indices of Vernonia amygdalina on postprandial blood glucose concentration of healthy humans
This clinical study was aimed at investigating the effect of Vernonia amygdalina on postprandial blood glucose concentration of healthy human subjects. Proximate analysis indicated that this vegetablecontained fiber, which is a non-soluble polysaccharide (NSP). The effect of the vegetable was compared with that of another indigenous vegetable also identified to be taken by diabetic patients, Gongronemalatifolium. A-50 g glucose was used for standard glucose tolerance test of each subject. The values were used to compare other test results. The blood glucose concentration of the subjects was determined (post absorptively) using Accu-chek active glucometer. The vegetables (50 g each) were processed and administered by squeeze-wash-drink and chew-raw to the subjects who also served as their own controls (n 8, Vernonia; n 8, Gongronema) on separate days in randomized order.
