    New Descriptor for Glomerulus Detection in Kidney Microscopy Image

    Glomerulus detection is a key step in histopathological evaluation of microscopy images of kidneys. However, the task of automatic detection of glomeruli poses challenges due to the disparity in sizes and shapes of glomeruli in renal sections. Moreover, extensive variations of their intensities due to heterogeneity in immunohistochemistry staining are also encountered. Despite being widely recognized as a powerful descriptor for general object detection, the rectangular histogram of oriented gradients (Rectangular HOG) suffers from many false positives due to the aforementioned difficulties in the context of glomerulus detection. A new descriptor referred to as Segmental HOG is developed to perform a comprehensive detection of hundreds of glomeruli in images of whole kidney sections. The new descriptor possesses flexible blocks that can be adaptively fitted to input images to acquire robustness to deformations of glomeruli. Moreover, the novel segmentation technique employed herewith generates high quality segmentation outputs and the algorithm is assured to converge to an optimal solution. Consequently, experiments using real world image data reveal that Segmental HOG achieves significant improvements in detection performance compared to Rectangular HOG. The proposed descriptor and method for glomeruli detection present promising results and is expected to be useful in pathological evaluation

    Metallic phase in the metal-intercalated higher fullerene Rb8.8(7)C84

    A new material of higher fullerene, RbxC84, was synthesized by intercalating Rb metal into C-84 crystals. The RbxC(84) crystals showed a simple cubic (sc) structure with lattice constant, a, of 16.82 (2) angstrom at 6.5 K, and 16.87 (2) angstrom at 295 K. The Rietveld refinements were achieved with the space group, Pa (3) over bar, based on a model that the C-2 axis of D2d-C84 aligned along [111]. The sample composition was determined to be Rb-8.8(7) C-84. The ESR spectrum at 303 K was composed of a broad peak with peak-to-peak linewidth Delta H-pp of 220 G, and a narrow peak with Delta H-pp of 24 G. Temperature dependence of the broad peak clearly showed a metallic behavior. The metallic behavior was discussed based on a theoretical calculation. This finding of new metallic phase in a higher fullerene is the first step for a development of new types of fullerene materials with novel physical properties such as superconductivity.</p

    Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Key Genes Involved in Weevil Resistance in the Hexaploid Sweetpotato

    Because weevils are the most damaging pests of sweetpotato, the development of cultivars resistant to weevil species is considered the most important aspect in sweetpotato breeding. However, the genes and the underlying molecular mechanisms related to weevil resistance are yet to be elucidated. In this study, we performed an RNA sequencing-based transcriptome analysis using the resistant Kyushu No. 166 (K166) and susceptible Tamayutaka cultivars. The weevil resistance test showed a significant difference between the two cultivars at 30 days after the inoculation, specifically in the weevil growth stage and the suppressed weevil pupation that was only observed in K166. Differential expression and gene ontology analyses revealed that the genes upregulated after inoculation in K166 were related to phosphorylation, metabolic, and cellular processes. Because the weevil resistance was considered to be related to the suppression of larval pupation, we investigated the juvenile hormone (JH)-related genes involved in the inhibition of insect metamorphosis. We found that the expression of some terpenoid-related genes, which are classified as plant-derived JHs, was significantly increased in K166. This is the first study involving a comprehensive gene expression analysis that provides new insights about the genes and mechanisms associated with weevil resistance in sweetpotato

    Churg-Strauss Syndrome with Necrosis of Toe Tips

    Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis of unknown etiology associated with bronchial asthma. Despite affecting small to medium-sized vessels, necrosis of the digits due to vasculitis is extremely rare. We report a case of CSS with necrosis of the toe tips. A 37-year-old woman with asthma, who had been diagnosed with CSS 2 years ago, was admitted to our hospital with an exacerbation of CSS. The patient had a high grade fever and complained of abdominal pain and numbness of the lower extremities. Blood examination revealed marked eosinophilia. The fever pattern, abdominal pain and blood eosinophilia showed improvement by combination treatment with prednisolone and cyclophosphamide. However, the color of her right toe tips changed, and necrosis finally resulted despite antithrombotic therapy. Arteriography showed narrowing of the dorsalis pedis artery and of the more peripheral arteries of her right leg. Stump plasty with negative pressure dressing therapy for the toe tips, but not amputation, was done to preserve the leg function. While numbness of the extremities remained, no recurrence of necrosis was seen. Clinicians need to be aware that rare complications of CSS, including necrosis of the digits, can occur

    The present study investigated the extent to which the results obtained from simple bluff body model, regarding pitching stability, can be applied to real vehicle aerodynamics. The investigation was carried out using a large eddy simulation method with vehicle-motion-airflow dynamic coupling capability. The aerodynamic damping coefficient and mechanism obtained from realistic sedan-type vehicle model cases are found similar to the one for simple body model cases. These agreements deduce that the use of simple body model in automotive aerodynamic research is justifiable

    Aerodynamic Pitching Stability Of Sedan-Type Vehicles Influenced By Pillar-Shape Configurations

    The present study investigated the aerodynamic pitching stability of sedan-type vehicles under the influence of A- and C-pillar geometrical configurations. The numerical method used for the investigation is based on the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method. Whilst, the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method was employed to realize the prescribed pitching oscillation of vehicles during dynamic pitching and fluid flow coupled simulations. The trailing vortices that shed from the A-pillar and C-pillar edges produced the opposite tendencies on how they affect the aerodynamic pitching stability of vehicles. In particular, the vortex shed from the A-pillar edge tended to enhance the pitching oscillation of vehicle, while the vortex shed from the C-pillar edge tended to suppress it. Hence, the vehicle with rounded A-pillar and angular C-pillar exhibited a higher aerodynamic damping than the vehicle with the opposite A- and C-pillars configurations.
