    Postoperative Urinary Retention (POUR): What Are The Risk Factors?

    Introduction Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful procedure alleviating pain in patients with debilitating arthritis. Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a common complication following surgery and is managed with intermittent or continued urinary catheterization. POUR has been estimated in retrospective literature to be on the order of 5% – 70% of surgical cases with early catheter removal or without a catheter. At our institution, and based on a Level 1 study here, urinary catheter is not used routinely in patients undergoing THA under regional anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of POUR and risk factors leading to urinary retention in patients undergoing THA using regional anesthesia who did not receive urinary catheterization

    Doc2b Protects β-Cells Against Inflammatory Damage and Enhances Function

    Loss of functional β-cell mass is an early feature of type 1 diabetes. To release insulin, β-cells require soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) complexes, as well as SNARE complex regulatory proteins like double C2 domain-containing protein β (Doc2b). We hypothesized that Doc2b deficiency or overabundance may confer susceptibility or protection, respectively, to the functional β-cell mass. Indeed, Doc2b+/- knockout mice show an unusually severe response to multiple-low-dose streptozotocin (MLD-STZ), resulting in more apoptotic β-cells and a smaller β-cell mass. In addition, inducible β-cell-specific Doc2b-overexpressing transgenic (βDoc2b-dTg) mice show improved glucose tolerance and resist MLD-STZ-induced disruption of glucose tolerance, fasting hyperglycemia, β-cell apoptosis, and loss of β-cell mass. Mechanistically, Doc2b enrichment enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) and SNARE activation and prevents the appearance of apoptotic markers in response to cytokine stress and thapsigargin. Furthermore, expression of a peptide containing the Doc2b tandem C2A and C2B domains is sufficient to confer the beneficial effects of Doc2b enrichment on GSIS, SNARE activation, and apoptosis. These studies demonstrate that Doc2b enrichment in the β-cell protects against diabetogenic and proapoptotic stress. Furthermore, they identify a Doc2b peptide that confers the beneficial effects of Doc2b and may be a therapeutic candidate for protecting functional β-cell mass

    There has been a growing interest in research for halal industry as the market has seen a tremendous growth in the global market and develops a strong presence in developed countries. With the halal industry being worth of US1.2trillionworldwideorUS1.2 trillion worldwide or US650 billion alone in the food sector, vast opportunities in the global halal food industry for Brunei to use in order to diversify its economy. Brunei has been prioritised economic diversification as a mean to economic development; however, it has not shown any successful result so far. For a long period, Brunei has sustained its high dependency on oil and gas sector, in which economic diversification is a key to lower down the current dependency. Brunei Halal brand was established as one of attempts to help push forward Brunei's halal industry and supply the amount of halal certified food to the global Muslim population. In addition, owing to strong religious identity and principle, Brunei halal gained a reputable status to international and Islamic standards. The attempt of this paper is to assess the viability of the halal food industry as a source for economic diversification of Brunei with understanding of the current status of Brunei halal food industry by SWOT analysis.     Association between High Blood Pressure and Intakes of Sodium and Potassium among Korean Adults: Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2012

    ABSTRACT Background The association between dietary sodium and potassium, the ratio of sodium to potassium, and blood pressure remains unclear. Objective We evaluated the associations between blood pressure and dietary sodium and potassium intake in terms of the amount and ratio in Korean adults. Design This cross-sectional study was based on data from the fourth and fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007Survey, -2012 Participants/setting A total of 24,096 adults (aged !19 years) without history of antihypertensive medication use were selected. The 24-hour recall method was used for dietary assessment. We categorized the subjects into four groups using median intakes of sodium and potassium, and defined the low sodium/high potassium intake group as the reference group. Main outcome measures High blood pressure (HBP) was defined as mean systolic or diastolic blood pressures of !140 or !90 mm Hg, respectively. Statistical analyses performed Multivariate logistic regression was performed to estimate the odds ratio and 95% CI to investigate the association between the four groups of sodium and potassium intakes and HBP. Results Sodium intake was positively associated with diastolic blood pressure, with an increase of 0.21 mm Hg per 1 mg/kcal increase in sodium (P<0.001). In contrast, potassium intake was negatively associated with systolic blood pressure, with a decrease of 1.01 mm Hg per 1 mg/kcal increase in potassium (P<0.001). After adjusting for confounders, the high sodium/low potassium (odds ratio 1.21, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.44) and low sodium/low potassium intake groups (odds ratio 1.19, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.40) were at higher risk of HBP than the reference group. The risk of HBP in the high sodium/high potassium group did not differ from that in the reference group. Conclusions Low potassium intake was associated with an increased risk of hypertension. These results suggest that increasing potassium intake might be beneficial for hypertension control among populations with low-potassium diets

    In vitro effects of salicylic acid, calcium and copper ions on growth and sporulation of Ganoderma boninense

    The in vitro effects of single and combined application of calcium ion (Ca2+), copper ion (Cu2+) and salicylic acid (SA) were evaluated on growth and sporulation of Ganoderma boninense. In poison medium test, T7-(Ca+Cu+SA) showed effective control of G. boninense in-vitro with EC50 and EC90 values of 1500+150+150 ppm and 2000+200+200 ppm, respectively. However, in dipping test, T3-(SA) showed effective control for G. boninense in-vitro with EC50 and EC90 values of 50 ppm and 200 ppm, respectively. Interestingly, T7 (Ca+Cu+SA) indicate effective control of G. boninense at low concentration, 500+50+50 pmm as shown by EC90 analysis. Pre treatment of Ganoderma -infected rubber wood block with 500 ppm Ca + 50 ppm Cu + 50 ppm SA reduced the number (20.14%), size (1.20 cm2) and weight of basidiocarp (0.80 g) compared to the control. This was followed by a significant reduction in weight loss of the Ganoderma–infected rubber wood block (41.85%) suggesting the inhibition of the degradative enzymatic activity of the fungus.     Classical communication and non-classical fidelity of quantum teleportation

    In quantum teleportation, the role of entanglement has been much discussed. It is known that entanglement is necessary for achieving non-classical teleportation fidelity. Here we focus on the amount of classical communication that is necessary to obtain non-classical fidelity in teleportation. We quantify the amount of classical communication that is sufficient for achieving non-classical fidelity for two independent 1-bit and single 2-bits noisy classical channels. It is shown that on average 0.208 bits of classical communication is sufficient to get non-classical fidelity. We also find the necessary amount of classical communication in case of isotropic transformation. Finally we study how the amount of sufficient classical communication increases with weakening of entanglement used in the teleportation process.Comment: Accepted in Quantum Info. Proces

    Guided bone regeneration with beta-tricalcium phosphate and poly L-lactide-co-glycolide-co-epsilon-caprolactone membrane in partial defects of canine humerus

    This study was performed to evaluate the effect of beta-tricalcium phosphate and poly L-lactide-co-glycolide-co-epsilon-caprolactone (TCP/PLGC) membrane in the repair of partial bone defects in canine proximal humerus. Three adult mixed-breed dogs were used during the experimental period. The length of the defect was quarter of the full length of humerus, and width of the defect was quarter of middle diameter of the lateral aspect of humerus. The humeri of each dog were divided into treatment (TCP/PLGC) and control groups. The defect was covered with TCP/PLGC membrane in treatment group. To evaluate regeneration of the bone, computerized tomography (CT) and histopathologic examination were performed. The radiopaque lines were appeared at the original defect sites in TCP/PLGC group but below the original site in control at 4th week. Radiopacity and thickness of the defect sites, and radiopaque lines were more increased at 8th week than those of 4th week. Histopathologic findings revealed fibrous connective tissue migration into the defect and the migration inhibited the structure of new cortex to be placed in the original level in control whereas new cortex growth was found in the level of original line in TCP/PLGC group. However, the new cortical bone in the TCP/PLGC group was thinner and less organized than the adjacent intact cortex, and the amount of new cancellous bones were also scanty. The result suggested that TCP/PLGC membrane is a good guided bone regeneration material to restore the original morphology of humerus in partial defect

    Comparison of serological assays in human Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-coronavirus infection

    Plaque reduction neutralisation tests (PRNT), microneutralisation (MN), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-spike pseudoparticle neutralisation (ppNT) and MERS S1-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibody titres were compared using 95 sera from 17 patients with MERS, collected two to 46 days after symptom onset. Neutralisation tests correlated well with each other and moderately well with S1 ELISA. Moreover to compare antigenic similarity of genetically diverse MERS-CoV clades, the response of four sera from two patients sampled at two time periods during the course of illness were tested by 90% PRNT. Genetically diverse MERS-CoV clades were antigenically homogenous.published_or_final_versio
